The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint (* unfinished project - lots of info *) — Page 11

Another thought I've had is that some parts of the film can be recreated without soundtrack.  Unfortunately, your options are limited, as only a few lines are provided, but here you will find the official Star Wars soundboard, which has dialogue without music or effects.

I wish there were more lines present, and I'm not even sure how to download the files, but if you know how, it can open up a few possibilities for you.

A VERY rough proof-of-concept for arranging the footage in such a way that I don't need to use the SE shot of the Falcon taking off...

(Password: fanedit.org)

I've taken two shots of Chewie and Han from later in ANH, reversed them, cropped the shot of Chewie and done a rough auto-chroma-key to add a random shot of a desert, animated to look as if the Falcon is lifting off. Obviously the finished shot would have the hangar bay and be matted by hand. Also I'd add SoundFX of Han rushing into the cockpit while the camera is on Chewie to really "sell" it and engine noises to properly time with the new sequence of shots.

Almost forgot, I retimed the shot of the Troopers so the Falcon flys away a little later.

I think this could work :-)

i´m afraid it will not work...

where is the wall from the docking bay?

where are the buildings of mos eisley?

after leaving the docking bay there fly straight to heaven....they will not seen any moutains.

I agree, I think it could work great.  I think benduwan perhaps misunderstands your plans with the shot, as I find it brilliant and quite workable.  The internal aspects are all sound, and if you are able to pull off the matting of the external shots through the cockpit window, I think it would work perfectly!  Well done, as always. :)

It could work. I'd probably use an actual flying shot over a desert to make it more convincing.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

LOL, that's alright.

Started creating the front layers for the shot. Chewbacca's hair is a joy to work with.

Well, I know you are dedicated enough to handle tedious chores, judging by your shuttle in the window effects for ST:TMP.  On the plus side, if Chewie's got a nice thick black outline, it would match the remaining effects of the film just fine :)  Keep up the great work :)

^ Yes, as with my ST:Reunion edit, PracticalFX of films from this period do feature matte lines, which is a bonus for a faneditor. Plus I love the look of oldskool compositing.

If anybody knows of such a shot... I need a reasonably hi-res shot of the Hanger bay rim, from roughly this angle...

It really only needs to be the rim/lip of the hanger bay surrounding wall. The rest of Mos Eisley I can "easily" fill in myself. A screengrab of the SE shot might just do.

Also a slightly more unusual request... Anybody know of a shot of the Falcon's engines?

There's this shot where the Queen's ship lands in Mos Espa.

The nice thing is that TPM used physical models rather than CGI.  If you made a screen grab and zoomed/cropped to a point before Amidala's ship got there, I think you could use the circular landing bay in the bottom right as a good Docking Bay 94.

What kind of shot are you hoping for with regards to the Falcon's engines?  There are several shots from the back, but it seems you want something different.

^ That might be slighty too high an angle to get away with but I'll try it.

I was thinking about that 'Top Gun' style shot when the jet engines fire at the point of take off.

It was just an idea I had but probably not practical.

I'm such a dork.  I think that Mos Espa shot must be from AOTC, because I don't remember any shot like that in TPM.  That means it would be a CGI town too :(  But if it's passable for the quick shot you're using it for, I guess we needn't be too picky.

As for shots from the back, there is the Falcon leaving Hoth base, traveling through hyperspace in ANH, and probably several other shots.  I don't know if they are what you're looking for, but there're a couple ideas for you.

^ Thanks, food for thought.

Finished rotoscoping Han, Chewie and Falcon out of the starfield on that take off shot (Took the best part of a day to complete the 46 frames needed LOL). I've also slotted in a temp shot of Mos Eisley (I'll create a custom animated matte for the final version) and added some temp SoundFX of the Falcon taking off...

^ Thanks y'all.

Finished up the animated matte...

https://vimeo.com/124110006

This matte was lot of fun to do. I seperated the still of Mos-Eisley up into several layers and moved them at different speeds. Then added the Docking-Bay lip from the SE shot. Moving simple 2D elements to create the illusion of 3D movement is cool stuff!

^ I realised that last test was all messed up. If you look closely it gives the appearance that the docking-bay is about 10 stories up. I've now re-leveled all the layers so they all start much lower and maintain the perspective properly throughout. Here is the final shot in the full sequence...

I've added a few more soundFX too of Han and his chair.

Amazing!  What more can I say?  I'm so excited about this project moving forward, even if this is all you take the time to work on at present!  Great work there, Ryan!

You know, I am excited to see  the digital bonus features that will be available soon with the digital releases. Who knows what other little snippets might come to light?

Hopefully none because I don't want to purchase that cr*p if I can avoid it ;-)

Well, here on this YouTube video it looks like there might be a little something extra about the swing across.  I think some of that shot is available and you used it already, but it also looks like there is more that was not available before.

But if I'm right, since it's on YouTube you wouldn't have to buy the digital version.
