Can anyone translate the new line? Need Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Dutch, and Russian.

It’s in the context of Luke speaking to Rey, just after telling her that Leia chose to follow their mother’s path due to fearing Vader’s hatred.

“By training you as a Jedi, Leia confronted her fears and embraced love over hatred.”

Spanish:
“Al entrenarte como Jedi, Leia enfrentó sus miedos y eligió el amor sobre el odio.”

‘‘Door je te trainen als Jedi, confronteerde Leia haar angsten en ontarmde zij liefde over haat.’’

For some reason I thought this was a reference to Dutch from Predator and read that in a Arnold Schwarzenegger voice until I realized what the post was actually about lol.

The fixed up version 5 is out now.

Hopefully that’ll do it until the necessary pieces for the Rey Nobody become available to me.

What are the fixes?

“The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”
-Sheev Palpatine, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Off the top of my head:

  • A Threepio line that hadn’t been updated with the most recent model
  • Color correction on Ahch-To
  • We re-did Luke’s dialogue on Ahch-To to the following: “She was quick to learn in our training. But Leia feared the hatred that consumed our father, choosing instead to follow our mother’s path. By training you as a Jedi, she confronted her fears and embraced love over hatred. A thousand generations live in you now, but this is your fight. Let Leia’s legacy guide you on Exegol.”

The goal with the last change there was to make it clear Luke is referring to a thousand generations of Jedi, and also subtly suggest that Leia’s fear of becoming a bad Jedi was what stopped her from training her son and sending him away to Luke. To which she amends by training Rey.

Apparently leaving it to upload and then going to bed doesn’t guarantee success. It’s there now though!

Could you upload the large 1080p as well? 😃

Does it not show up for you? I see it there.

It was last updated on August 13. Is this the latest version?

Yes, that should be. I think it is saying that about the folder itself, not the contents therein.

It’s the correct one though. I had it finished a while before getting around to sorting out the other versions and uploading them. I thought I’d uploaded them about the same time but evidently not. There’s no more recent version than that one.

Can I get a link please? Thanks

Is this the place to request a link for the latest version on Ascendant or is it better to DM Hal9000?

Has anyone already discussed the ethics of using audio of a deceased person’s voice to generate new audio?

It’s a morally grey area. I believe that so long as you aren’t using it for profit or in a distasteful way, it’s permissible. In other words, as long as it’s something being done out of passion for an intellectual property, there’s really no harm in it. But I can’t blame somebody for being uncomfortable about it. I just don’t think that somebody else’s discomfort gives them the right to pass a judgment about the topic for everybody as a whole. It’s a personal thing because of how grey it is.

Maybe one day there will be laws passed about this. But those are never retroactive. For now, it’s the wild west, and it’s up to the people to make sure they’re using these tools in respectful way.

It’s more about respecting the dead who haven’t consented to audio of their voice(s) being used to generate new audio of them speaking.

When one believes in respecting the dead, they tend to believe that the dead are either omniscient or watching us from the grave.

If a for-profit company were to be the one doing it a bunch, then I would start to take issue with it. It would feel like they’re milking somebody’s likeness from beyond the grave to get more money - even if they have good intentions. The only way in that case that I think it’s okay is if they’re given express permission to be able to do it. Such as JEJ giving Lucasfilm the rights to clone his Vader voice. They apparently didn’t handle this process right with Tarkin, as you might have seen in the news.

But, as Hal pointed out, not many actors have ever really weighed in on this AI topic properly. I think this is a case of it’s okay (for us) to do it so long as you aren’t financially benefiting until the actor/estate actually expresses they don’t want it done with them. And not doing anything inappropriate with that likeness along the way.

It seems like you’re approaching this from more of a spiritual/supernatural approach. Again, as long as the AI product is honoring their legacy and work, I think it can actually be quite respectful. It shows that they aren’t forgotten and can continue to have an impact on the world by continuing to develop their characters. I suppose a part of it depends on your willingness to separate the character from the actor, though.

The universally, very much including here, Carrie Fisher having passed on doesn’t really impact our use of AI for this project other than that the filmmakers themselves were hamstrung by her loss. We used AI for at least two other characters when there was a need for it.

Fan editing at large is an unofficial hobby, a digital version of something natural and inevitable with stories that will always occur. No disrespect is intended, generally, and certainly not when it comes to any of the performers whom aren’t with us anymore.
