Nice! That is a pretty darn clean line of dialogue compared to what we normally have to work with. Hopefully can chew on this tonight.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Seems just a little wrong to have the camera move a tiny bit before settling on Luke. It’d probably be better to keep more or the shot or lose more of it.

I’d feel bad to fully remove that shot of Luke because of how hard Nev worked on the outside of the hut lol. That’s why I tried to leave a small portion of the shot in for the concept. But if we feel this line replacement is worth it then by all means chop it out.

I think “a thousand generations live in you” works far better as setup for Rey hearing the voices of past Jedi, having them “stand behind” her (as Qui-Gon says), and Rey saying she’s “all the Jedi”.

Pie in the sky dream, though not possible:

Palps: I am the Sith (semi call back to PT)

Rey: And I … am a Jedi. (who cares if your THE Sith, I’m a freakin’ Jedi bro!)

note: It’s not possible, but man I’d love that. Rey is NOT all the Jedi … she’s not the last airbender. /sarcasm Lol.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Agreed. “We will always be with you” sounds so…personal. It sounds like it just refers to Luke and Leia. In this edit, Rey is going to see Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin without ever meeting them. Why should she care that they’re “with her”? Not to mention hearing Qui-Gon, Ahsoka, Kanan…

“A thousand generations live in you” better helps to foreshadow the scope of what’s to come, and gives more context for Rey personally.

But I still think it would be worth testing out “We will always be with you” as the final line of the sequence - it’s much more poignant than “You have everything you need.”

Maybe I’ll do my own mock-up tonight.

Yeah. I will mock the new line up and put it into as good a shape as possible and we can just see what works better. But unless it’s a pretty good fit, I will lean toward leaving it as is.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Rey never knows the other Jedi. I think personal works way better after Luke just told a personal story about him and Leia.

She tries to reach out to them in the beginning of the movie, we then get a payoff at the end with all the jedi. I like it that way.

Exactly, if this line was changed it would seem to setup for Luke and Leia to show up on Exegol, instead of all the jedi (and the phantom four).

I prefer “a thousand generations” as well. I just thought this was a really creative way of implementing Luke’s unused line is all.

It is much more personal, and yet it doesn’t completely discount the idea that “we” could refer to the rest of the Jedi as well.

I’ll mock it up but I expect not to use it. Worth seeing about.

I asked JakeRyan to try doing a similar edit one time, though it isn’t “I am a Jedi,” it’s “I am the Jedi.”

Does that moment need foreshadowing though? I think if that the ghosts were in the actual movie it would work better without the foreshadowing. Maybe that’s just me though…

For some reason it says the “With You” file is corrupted when I try to import it. Is that something wrong on my end?

I could send you a .wav version. I thought some people might have an issue with mp3.

Not to unnecessarily derail this thread, but a few pages back people brought up Rey’s narration in the cave in TLJ, and I’ve seen this complained about elsewhere as an example of ‘telling not showing’. The thing is, she’s not just narrating it for the audiences sake; she’s describing the experience to Ben, right? I think you’re supposed to wonder “why is there narration in my Star Wars movie!?” and then it’s a little twist when it cuts to Rey in the hut Force Skyping Ben. I think if you cut all that narration out, it’d feel quite abrupt to cut to the hut and have her suddenly start talking, and you lose that immediate realisation/understanding that she’d been sharing her emotions with Ben.

I haven’t commented in a long while, but I shared this thought too.
The Sith are selfish, Sidious is all the Sith because they have killed each other and the stronger prevails, so the Sith as a whole grow always stronger. The reason the Rule of Two exists.

“I am all the Jedi” I know what they went for, all generations, all the knowledge lives in her now.
But we already know that by that point, so using it as a grand statement is a little too much and repeating the same line as the bad guy is kinda weird.

“I am a Jedi” is a way more humble statement, they use to work together, were agents of the will of the Force (and are Luke’s words obviously)

In my mind it’s something like this:

  • “I am all the Sith” arrogant, proud of their violient history, as he is the strongest of them all.
  • “And I am a Jedi” is humble. Like I know what you are, but I am a Jedi, just one Jedi and that’s enough to stand up to you because the Force is with me.

I extended the Rey shot, faded the music together to make it longer, tested the 'Always be with you" no idea if this works,

I just managed to do this exact same thing except without extending anything. Probably way too squished in my version, though. I do like this order of dialogue: “She surrendered her saber to me and said that one day it would be picked up again by someone who would finish her journey. We’ll always be with you. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.”

Here is your exact same thing but without any extensions:

I feel the timing is a little rushed and unnatural. Have you tried slowing down the track very slightly, use optical frame and keeping the same pitch for the music?

I’ve done that a few times thought this movie and it’s almost impossible to notice. It may give this line a little more breathing space.

EDIT: How about using it as we see Luke & Leia’s force ghosts just before Rey smiles?

I had considered this but the ghosts at the end of ROTJ never spoke. I’ll give it a shot and apply some reverb to see if I like it.

The line being inserted there feels a little disjointed to me, like it muddles the point Luke is making. Ideally it’d go after the ‘thousand generations’ line, but we obviously can’t do that.

We definitely can do this, but should we really?

Audio integration wise it’s well done but the way it’s delivered sounds like it’s part of the same train of thought as the previous sentence, rather than the next. I don’t think you can fix this no matter how much you extend, the cut from Rey to Luke is there to signify the shift in his dialogue. It would have to go after “a thousand generations.”

Personally though I’m not sure I understand what is being added here…
