Images from LeeThorogood's transfer are now up for comparison: LINK

Interesting to compare the four PAL transfers (Moth3r, Citizen, Grinder & LeeThorogood). Moth3r and Citizen are obviously sharpened a fair bit - for better or for worse. Grinder and Lee have a softer, more natural image; very similar to each other although Lee's are a little darker.

Well done?

Utterly irrelevant to this topic, BTW.

Update: laserdisc screen comparison page now renamed.

Now working on a custom DVD comparison; need to add DJ's V1/V2 and g-force's release. Can anyone send me raw untouched BMPs of the 6 shots for these?

Will add DJ's V3 and Lee's Technicolor project when available.

Hi guys - I don't know if it's of any use to you but I have a 1986/7 VHS of ANH. Let me know anyway as I can always record it and upload it :-)

When will the blu-ray and Harmy V2.0 be on the?

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Are you sure it's from 1986?....It's more likely to be from 1984.....maybe?

What would be the acceptable method of grabbing frames from Harmy's v2.1 AVCHD?

I am aware that the frame reference page says this:

Notes on Screenshot Capturing
Every effort was made to ensure the images are as close to the actual DVDs as possible. All screenshots are in JPEG format at 100% quality.
The method used to create each image: Load the DVD VOB file into VirtualDubMod -> Copy the screenshots into Photoshop -> Save to JPEG

But as far as I can tell (after using VirtualDubMod and some quick Googling), VirtualDubMod is old and not under development, so it doesn't support .m2ts nor does it play well with the MKV which I muxed.

I want to have Harmy's DE project added to the screenshot comparisons, but I want to use the method which is most acceptable. I can find the individual frames using Media Player Classic, if that is allowed. If so, what render settings should I use?

Also... why ought I to save the files as JPEG and not PNG?

These stickies are really overdue a revamp.

Even though the thread title says "new", this is a legacy of a time when laserdisc captures were the main push of the forum.

There's not really much point of creating a comparison for Harmy's project as there is nothing to compare it against. (Although if they were to be a downscaled DVD version I could add it to my Custom DVD page.)

Haven't seen anything from Zion for a few years so I doubt that his site is still active.

VirtualDubMod has never been recommended for taking screenshots, even for DVDs, as it alters the colours. The latest VirtualDub with the MPEG-2 plugin, or AviSynth with DGIndex/MPEG2Source would be my recommendation for DVDs. For MKV I'd try AviSynth with ffmpegsource. Not sure you could trust MPC not to apply any processing to the video that may affect the screenshot.

JPG is used because the file size is smaller than PNG, thus the screens are quicker to load.

As I think moth3r was saying, the screenshots previously discussed on this thread (and the ones on the old thread this replaced) are all of a different generation of restorations projects, and as such, it is not really a fair comparison to add in comparative captures from the currently ongoing preservations. Since a lot now are using different sources, e.g. 35mm film stock, upscaled versions, cleaned up GOUT, or even the BD, comparison shots are really just useful when contrasting like projects. Each of these will be very different from each other and has different goals.

I understand your point, and it is helpful to seen screenshots of the various versions people on the forum are working on, it is just important to compare apples with apples, and for this, the screenshots offered within each of the individual project discussions are the most relevant. The comparison screenshots should be used more as a guide to see the varying restoration work each has achieved on to the respective source material(s), rather than compare each project to one another to see which is the 'best' version out there, as this is no an accurate contrast and at any rate such a view would be entirely subjective.
