Watched this the other night, and I gotta say how impressed I was. I tend to be a nitpick over Star Wars edits, but besides the transition into and cuts during the mudhorn scene, and maybe the unavoidable time jump issues going from episode 3 to 4 and 4 to 7, this edit was near perfect. (I shouldn’t be surprised given the fantastic TCW edits which I still mourn the loss of) I honestly thought about showing this edit to more casual SW fans.

This movie really felt like the kind of like the EU books I read as a kid and imagined movies of, so it was quite the nostalgia trip in that sense.

Hope to see more excellent work from you on this site!

Many thanks. The Mudhorn scene was very tricky because it was fundamental to the storyline, but in terms of making a movie spanning the whole season, the Jawas had to go. I wasn’t 100% happy with the editing of the scene, but I think it still works.

Can’t wait to start working on season 2!

I also just finished it up. I was actually really impressed at how you were able to make the mudhorn scene fit. In terms of making sure this essential scene was there it was a clever way of doing it (in fact figuring out how to do that was half the reason I never bothered making my own edit of this).

Overall the narrative is solid. You hit all the key points and we get all the essential character development. It’s got me pretty pumped for season 2!

I had time just to watch the first half so far, but I was surprised how emotional engaging it was when stripped to the core narrative throughline. I’m enjoying it so far!

I really enjoyed your take and I’m impressed how effectively you were able to trim it to the core storyline. I honestly assumed there would be some hard cuts and some moments where I just needed to acknowledge that this was a fan edit. But I truly didn’t. You can tell you didn’t let emotion in the way of your cuts. I’m sure I would have struggled with ditching a couple scenes that would have truly have rendered the edit impossible to make feel “right”. Your take felt like a standard 2 and a half hour movie and all the threads connected so naturally.

Nice work!

Thanks for the kind words.
I was surprised myself at how well the series flowed when cut together. It was definitely easier than the Clone Wars! There was just enough footage available to pad out scenes between episodes like the Kuiil-IG repair scene and an in-hyperspace shot from The Prisoner of Mando giving the child the ball.

I have to thank @JakeRyan17 who persuaded me to open the movie on arvala-7. It took some work to combine the exposition from the two Nevarro trips into one, but cutting out the first trip allowed me to retain the Trandoshan scene and add in the space battle scene from the Gunslinger. It also connects the viewer more to the child because you’re experiencing Nevarro with him.

The biggest issue I had was the dramatic and obvious “end of episode” music. Luckily we were basically given the whole series soundtrack and I was able to find suitable music for the Ep1-2, Ep2-3 and Ep3-4 transitions. However, it involved rebuilding the entire audio, which was a real ball-ache.

Just finished it. What a treat! I think it really works in this format, and I doubt anything would’ve stood out to me if I hadn’t already seen the show. That being said, the only thing that did was the mudhorn scene, but even that’s nitpicking.

This movie has a solid throughline and the emotions resonate well when Season 1 is concentrated into an action packed single film like this. I will look forward to its sequel in Q4 2021. 😉

Thanks Hal. I’m hoping to get episode 2 out early next year 😀.

I’ve just finished this edit and I had sucha good time watching it.

I think we all know that 2.5 hours is long for a Star Wars movie but everything in this edit was 100% needed.

The edit had a nicely-paced 3 part structure with the ensemble cast being introduced throughout Mandos adenture; no character got the short straw in order to cut minutes.

Honestly, well done and thank you Smudger!

The only thing I need to say is I personally prefer the original Mandolorian opening without the crawl and classic theme. Would a version like that be possible? If not, its not important 😃 thanks again.

Current Edits:
Obi-Wan Kenobi - TBC
The Mandalorian (Season 1) - V1 Complete
The Mandalorian II (Season 2) - TBC
The Mandalorian Returns (TBOBF) - TBC

Once the edit has been available for a couple of months I was going to put up MKV versions of a few different openings.

  1. Star Wars Logo
  2. Star Wars Logo with Episode VII
  3. No crawl

Just finished watching, and I think the cuts you made were very successful. It worked well to have Werner Herzog’s character talk about the Mandalorians and how “it is a shame your people suffered,” then in the next scene we see the Mandalorians living underground for the first time. It also worked very well to have the space dogfight as an immediate reason for Mando returning to Nevarro.

I thought it was a shame how offhand Kuill’s death ended up in the context of one whole film, a lot of the tension building up to it being cut as well, but whenever shots or dialogue were edited out they were edited out very smoothly, so well done.

It was really nice to revisit the show with season 2 just around the corner.

Ooh I have one question: because you were working on a whole fully put-together product, when cutting dialogue, how did it work out with engineering the music? I never noticed any sudden changes in the music, which is why I’m curious.

Hey Smudge…

I desperately needed something to print on the bluray disc I burned of this AWESOME edit.

I used the text from your poster and quickly made this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dEcaEGUxuu-ZOzkfTn8UM61013lo_pIu/edit

Nothing special, but it fit the bill. 😛

If you find it worthy, and / or think others might appreciate it, feel free to use it as you see necessary.

Thanks. I have done a full Bluray cover…

Often you can isolate the audio channel with the dialogue.

Thanks Hal. I thought as much, especially after going back to watch some of the rescored scenes. Another element of the edit that’s pulled off really well.

Hope I haven’t missed this somewhere - what editing software did you use for this smudger9, other than Photoshop for some shots?
