I do like V2B with regards to the extra shot of Kylo, that’s much better.

What I was thinking for cutting to the base when Finn says ‘Rose!’ was that she would get shot down and then it would cut to all of the shots of the Resistance base with the various bits of radio chatter, with Finn’s ‘Rose’ among them.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

This version has:
-faster pace for Rose getting shot down
-lasers are not tilted down so much
-more EQ of Finn screaming “Rose”
-Finn’s “Rose!” line moves back so it’s over the shot of Poe
-I’ve added some more lighting to the wide shot of the explosion to match Kylo’s face (and for pacing, it felt a bit off to me before)

We now have 7 FX shots in this sequence alone!

I tried this but it felt a bit off. For me, It was too much time without seeing Finn, and his eventual reaction shot felt disconnected. So you can see it, though, here’s how it came out:

Man, that’s really good.
Also, props for going ahead and making the alternatives. I agree with your feelings and feel like your main version has the best pacing so far.

The new vfx have really improved by the way! The laser shots feel a lot more natural to me, I hope you saw what I was getting at.

Also, I don’t know when you added the subtle laser flash on Finn’s face when he gets shot down, but I just noticed it and it really helps sell it.

A very tiny detail I was thinking about was, that we see most of Finn’s approach from the left side of the Finn, and when he gets shot, the AT-AT that shoots him is also on that left side (you can tell based off Kylo’s shuttle in the sky). But since he also crashes to the left, I wonder if it would make more since for him to be shot from an AT-AT on his right side, since he looks to his right, and the impact appears to push him to the left. All you would need to do is flip the shot of the AT-AT, but it also would sort of break this 180 axis that has been set up in this sequence, and there is a natural flow of the AT-AT firing to the right, and then Finn looking that direction in the next shot.
So I don’t if that would look more natural, or it looks more natural now as is.

Anyway, that is a nitpicks thing but I think this is coming together pretty well poppa. I’m interested to get other people’s thoughts on it. Because I think at this point we just want to know if there is anything else that needs to be done or could be done to really make this feel as seamless as possible.

I can definitely take a look at the AT-AT firing shot but I suspect it wouldn’t be as natural flopped. As you said, it would break the scene’s axis of walkers firing to the right, and Finn does look toward the left of frame after being fired upon from that direction. I do see what you’re getting at, though!

And I also would love to hear other’s thoughts! Is there anything that sticks out? Does the new pacing and flow work? Did we go too far in a few places?!

I would look at using the shot of the AT-AT firing at Luke for when Finn gets shot down. You can see kylo’s ship off to the left. It just needs color corrected to match the time of day.

Good suggestions! I decided to actually just remove the shuttle from the existing shot. This fixes the geography issue and also makes it a unique shot (as opposed to duplicated and scaled in). The Version 2B link has been updated:

Wow, just wow! I am really liking this a whole lot. Your FX work is really making this work quite smoothly.

It is better this way then the scene of him finding Rose since there is no way to make enough footage for time with him finding her. This way, it is happening behind scenes AND explains why he is dragging her into base later.

I dig this. Alot.

I don’t know if you’ve already done a version like this, but would it work better if we don’t see the bit where Poe slides into the trench? Maybe just keep the beginning of the shot where Finn’s speeder slides across the ground, then cut right to the blast traveling down the beam to keep Finn’s wreck and the blast in the same emotional moment.

Something like that can work, we do need to have that transition of Poe before the weapon fires for timing.

I think you cut to the weapon fire after Poe tells the troops to go and he looks over the trench. Right then cut to the weapon firing. I think it may be good too for the “pulse” to maybe have some kind of Sound FX maybe? Doens’t have to be much, but if possible a sound that may mimic a pulse from high to low sound may add to it.

I do see what you mean about the feeling of the moment, I think it “drags on” when you see the troops and Poe “exit” the trench. It does take away the suspense. However, the suspense and urgency is there when Poe does jump in and tell everyone to move. That’s where that scene needs to end. It can be a natural transition when he looks over the trench … that when it cuts to the blast.

I definitely agree with you, jarbear and NeverarGreat. At the very least, the shot of Poe needs to be trimmed a bit. There was something interesting about having the explosion happen off-camera because the musical/emotional climax happens when Finn gets shot down. I do like being able to show the actual blast, though, as I think it would be odd for a Star Wars film not to show it. Hopefully, trimming the Poe shot does the trick. If not, I’ll have to find some music to bridge the gap. Next chance I get, I will play with this.

I do like that better, the pacing is better.

Here is a question for eveyone as well … should there be some kind of music in the background instead of the silence? Kind of gloom and doom subtle music? In some ways too it almost seems anti climatic since it’s so quiet … unless that just me!

That’s a great question. I sort of felt that the climax was Finn getting shot down. And the next couple of shots benefitted from a sparser mix, letting the firing and explosion own the stage. At the same time, I can see how it may still be too long without music, and makes the explosion anti-climactic, So I’ve put together something that has a little more rumbling build-up to the explosion. It doesn’t take away from the Finn moment, but serves as an extension (I think) of the climax, building to the inevitable.

I’m glad there’s excitement here! Thanks to everyone for their help and feedback. It’s been a really fun collaboration!

I’m just waiting on a couple of things to finish the 5.1 mix for the second workprint. That way, I can check and get feedback on both the video and audio mix.

I also just moved and haven’t had as much time this past week. Hope to have something ready soon!
