Okay, I found some time this morning to play a little, and was able to replace one of the stormtroopers in the wide running shot with phasma. In fact, it’s the stormtrooper that Finn jumps over as they run towards the shuttle. The only question would be how to get her into the previous shot. I think the trooper immediately over Finn’s shoulder would be too difficult with all of the rotoscoping that would need to be done. It also doesn’t appear perspective-wise to line up with the trooper than Finn jumps over. This is first pass, so curious if this plus a more obvious reveal in the first shot would work!

Thanks for the feedback, everybody, I’m glad it’s looking okay!

That looks nice! Honestly that first shot is so quick I don’t think it is really necessary, unless you wanted that attention to detail.

The first shot is actually considerably longer, I just trimmed it in the vimeo post. It starts with the tie fighter crashing down in the hanger and Finn waking up. Rose then drags him around a bit. If I can get phasma to appear for a few seconds in the background, I think that would help. It will take longer, though, because I will have to roto Finn and Rose. That’s the path I’m going down, but it may take a while before I have anything to post.

Thanks again!

Ok, here’s the next pass, with phasma now appearing in the first shot as well. I think (hope!) this gives it a moment to sink in and maintains continuity while remaining subtle.

Oh yeah, that’s absolutely perfect!

@poppasketti There’s an edit in which Luke has his green saber from Return of the Jedi. Do you plan on using it for your edit?

Looks real good.

PM me for links to my edits; apparently, some feel shy about this.

I don’t think so. I’ve read many arguments for and against this change, and to me they come out a wash. Without getting too far into it, I think there’s symbolic reasons why the blue saber makes sense in the story.

I may be in the minority, but I admit the blue saber didn’t spoil the surprise for me when I saw it in theater the first time. On repeat viewings, it still doesn’t bother me.

It didn’t spoil it for me either! I was totally oblivious.

Just wanted to say the addition of Phasma body fixes the biggest gripe I had with this fanedit.

This is such a fantastic project, poppasketti. I’m glad to see you back at it again because your work is great.

While I’m here, I’ll mention my “wish list” that still remains for The Last Jedi, though maybe I’ll just use your work on Rekindled as the foundation for my own fanedit someday:

I wish…

  • …that “The Jedi Steps” played when Luke confronts the First Order. I made my own version of this here, and I think it is SO much more powerful than the music that plays currently.

  • …that Luke’s lightsaber was green. There, I said it. You’re right that there are symbolic reasons for why it is blue, though I will say that I was caught off guard when I first saw the movie and was confused as to why the blue one is what was being used despite it having clearly been destroyed moments before and would be a clear indicator to Kylo Ren that something was off.

On second thought, those are the only things on my must-have wish list. There are a few other odds and ends (I’m still not sure where I land on the Broom Boy sequence at the end), but those are my thoughts anyway.

I definitely agree, poppa has made a fantastic edit and it is cool to see how popular it has been (if I had a nickel for every time he’s had to say “PM sent”)!

I will say that although I initially helped brainstorm the idea of removing Rose rescuing Finn, I would like to see a version where Rose knocks Finn out of the way right before the AT-AT shoots him. I think that alone, making it objectively clear that Finn was doomed regardless, would help make Rose’s actions more palatable for a lot of people.

I hope you stick around these threads poppa, because I’d love to see your ideas for other projects in the future!

@poppasketti The first Rey and Luke scene looks so inconsistent with the ending of The Force Awakens (in terms of the sky and grass). Do you plan on color-correcting/editing it to look consistent with TFA?

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but ForceGhostRecon’s edit did this. My only issue is that the hilt replacement isn’t entirely seamless. And, well, that I’d finally been converted to the “It should be kept blue” side before he’d finished his edit.

I know he’s been banned here now, but there are others who should be able to point you in his edit’s direction if you want to check out his attempt.

Hey man! Loved the edit a ton. There are 2 things that I would think need to be cut just for continuity and for pacing.

1# The final scene that ends on the small children from the horse arena. This makes no sense continuity wise especially with the small ring the boy has, since rose never gives it to him. (I used the 1080p version, if you have edited it out in another version might want to include that in the 1080p one)

2# This is a smaller issue, but for saving the focus and tension of the scene (and my sanity). Please would you cut that small scene with the one rebel fighter next to Gareth Edwards on Crait who out of nowhere comments on the ground with salt (the new coarse and ruff irritating sand).

There are smaller changes from other edits that I do enjoy and think help preserve the dwindling intelligence of the original film such as: cutting the “Oh No” from the very beginning, cutting straight to the star destroyer in the atmosphere (preserve the urgency of the scene), cutting a few of the slap stick level reactions from Admiral Hux from the very beginning, the slapstick porg on the windshield on crait, the “right away sir” after Kilo shoves Hux at the end (funny but it just ruins the atmosphere, SW has always had comedy but taken its character drama very seriously) and the cringy “may the force be with you hehehe you go I’ve said it enough” flub (just cutting to “MTFBWY Always” is plenty in my opinion.

There are other things that would help the SW canon such as “magnetic mines active” when dropping the bombs such as in Ivan’s version, and the cutting of the “God’s speed rebels” line which bugs me so much (I am even a Christian (or religious) but if you think about this line for even a few seconds it opens a can of worms which asks a crazy question I don’t want asked in a star wars movie…Who is God in Star Wars???). The hyperspace collision is likely unfixable which is so unfortunate since it is the largest open can of worms, but unless I missed something the fact the rebels couldnt contact anyone else in the galaxy while they were on their cruiser being chased is a plot hole (I know they are running out of power but if they have enough for another full light speed jump then they have enough for one phone call to someone to ask them to call everyone else).

Anyway lol I obviously have some problems with the original version, but I really appreciate yours! Thanks for all the hard work and creativity you have put into this.

May the force be with you.
