The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released) — Page 49

“Oh, hello there, Luke. Been quite a while. Let me instruct you on the Force ability to merge your consciousness as you slip into the ethereal realm. There’s a good lad.”

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Lol Hal

I think the simplicity of a callback to ANH is enough. To become a Force ghost, you’ve gotta “let go” of your personal desire to live on. That’s a Sith thing.

Author
Time

Yeah clearly it was too wordy, I’m just not convinced, “let go,” really conveys anything of importance here. Yeah it’s a call back, and it is in line with the jedi way, blah blah blah. But what is the purpose of Obi-wan encouraging him to, “let go”? Luke is already dying. Is there an indication he is fighting his own death, that he needs to let go?

The reason Luke dies is his use of force projection. Yes, he did sacrifice himself to save the resistance, but the sacrifice ends there. It might be a good idea to use this moment to foreshadow his return at the end of your TROS edit. Like the way Obi-wan told Vader he would, “become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Just my two cents.

Author
Time

You can definitely interpret it that Luke is fighting to keep on living. I definitely do. It’s only when he sees the twin suns that he realizes that the future is now secure without him. Having Obi-Wan’s line makes his conclusion more explicitly clear. Perhaps Luke could have fought to live on, but that would not be the Jedi-like thing to do. He did everything that he needed to in order to aid the Resistance.

Just spitballing here, but the biggest issue with Luke’s death is that it feels a bit random. Like, he could just as easily have lived, so it’s unclear what purpose his death serves.

So what if Luke saw his own death when he confronted Ben, a death he knew would take place on this island? This is hinted at when he says to Rey ‘I came to this island to die’. However, in that context it sounds like he has just given up and figures that this would be as good a place as any to spend the rest of his days, instead of accepting the truth of a vision that is put in motion when he fails to kill Ben.

Perhaps he says something in the Jedi Tree:

“I will never train another generation of Jedi. I came to this island to die…that is my destiny. It is time for the Jedi…to end.”

Just a bit to emphasize that he has seen his own future and believes it to be unchangeable. Therefore when he dies it is in fulfillment of his own vision, but interpreted in a hopeful way that he couldn’t have foreseen.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I like that idea Nev. Or maybe he says, “I’ve foreseen it”. Once I got Mark’s voice loaded stuff like this will be possible.

Author

Oh my God, I love that idea, Nev.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

anyone got a link to this they could give me? would be greatly appreciated.

Dude!! That’s so good!

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Hey Hal, I don’t know if this has been reported to you but there is a popping sound in the audio in both English tracks at 1:10:23. If ever you do a new version with that AI Luke line, I’d suggest taking a look at that.

On another note, I know this has been brought up before but I’m of the opinion that Poe and Rey’s introduction is better left out given that it was done to set up Colin Trevorrow’s unmade Ep. 9. As it stands, it’s kind of a weird thing that draws attention to itself, which if it were never brought up one would’ve assumed they had already met each other between scenes in TFA.

Thanks for pointing out the pop. I’m not necessarily planning to revise TLJ but I’ll note it for if I ever do.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Not that I can think of for TLJ. Maaaaybe he could say “lesson three” or something like it for TROS. Even then I’m not sold on the change, so it may not be worth training a whole AI just to try it out.

+1 to this idea. I know that this happened on account of a deleted scene from TLJ but I hate how the “Third Lesson” is just a dangling thread left in these movies.

Author
Time

I know about the deleted scene, but while watching the movie I just assumed Rey left the island before Luke could give her the third lesson.

Hal, would you happen to know what color correction values were applied to this edit? And if so, how might I go about replicating it in editing software? I’m currently in the process of adding the aforementioned deleted scenes to a hybrid version of Legendary and Rekindled.

Author

I used the FCP7 color correction wheel (3-wheel) to dial it away from green, doing so more for the midrange than the blacks and even moreso for the highlights. This was a blunt adjustment with no nuance other than my eyeballs and keeping it proportioned. (Say it was -9 for the highlights, that would mean it would probably have been -6 for the midrange and -3 for the blacks.)

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Cool thanks. I’m not sure how detailed my editing software’s color correction wheel is but I should be able to eyeball it in such a way to replicate that.

EDIT: What you described worked perfect, thanks again.

Just released a V6 of this project which is intended as close-the-book final. It uses a new LUT from skenera for a much better color correction, and fixes a couple audio and subtitle issues.

I am still unable to upload to the google drive, but I will once I am able to again. Anyone who nabbed V3 of Ascendant, this can be found the same way.

You’re working on your own hybrid cut? Awesome!

It evolved into a hybrid and extended cut. All caretaker deleted scenes and appearances are back because they’re awesome.

Gonna be on the lookout for that. I had started mixing Rekindled with the Dugnutt extended one before my computer crapped out.

I like you, let us burn things together.

I’ll probably make a thread for it at some point. Somebody already sent me a PM about it so I uploaded it to my Drive. I’ll send it your way in a sec.

There’s gonna be a lot of hybrid edits by the time Ahsoka’s finished. 😆

Hey Hal, did this cut implement the recent idea to have Luke say he has foreseen his death in the island? I know in the Ascendant thread they have just cracked AI Luke so I’m curious if there was ever any chance for that given that it was such a neat idea.

Author

Nah, but I’m all right with that. The point the line would highlight is already implied by the story as we have it, and somehow I feel more okay with use of AI for 9 than for 8. I’m gonna leave TLJ as final for me.
