I don't call it Krayt Dragon at all. I call it Crayon. It is shorter, y'know. And a bit less menacing.
Well... a bit.

the garbage mattes
I first saw a garbage matte on a VHS formed over R2D2 in the X wing.
I just thought oh that’s the shielding.
But when I got the 2004 DVD watched the seen with the TIE’s and the falcon
and there were garbage mattes galore I thought what TIE’s don’t have shielding WTF?
I had my brightness to hi to compensate for the dark DARK DVD.
I first saw the garbage mattes on the old Kenner show at home super 8mm film. The print is so light that a lot of stuff was easy to see, although I wonder if people have corrected this in the various digital transfers.
I pronounce it "Smith."
WTF?
What Krayt Dragon? I did not see or hear any in that scene ...
... In fact, I didn't see or hear any Krayt Dragon in the entire movie.
... or in any Star Wars movie whatsoever.
From the time I first saw the movie in the early '80s up until the mid-00's, I had always thought that it was supposed to be a Tusken yell of suprise from seeing Obi-Wan. The sound sounded a lot like a Tusken, but in a higher pitch as if surprised and afraid. Either they were generally afraid of strangers walking in on them when they are doing something bad, and/or they recognized Obi-Wan and knew him to be a bad-ass whom they did not want to mess with ... Even worse would be if a vigilante whom they knew could easily kick their asses, and who probably would do so if he witnessed them doing something bad would walk in on them when they were doing something bad.
This is the explanation that makes the most sense to me, and the one that I prefer. Therefore, I would prefer that a fan-edit or a future release of Star Wars either restore the original call or make it sound more like a Tusken.
As far as I am concerned, "Krayt Dragons" are not part of canon.

You mean apart from this one?
The blu-ray Krayt (I always said cray't) sounds like Captain Eo trapped in his zip fly in an echo chamber.
As a kid I thought the Krayt Dragon call was a sand person sounding a horn or crying out because Obi-Wan had appeared.
To be honest I found it a weak concept.
I would have them just run away from him because of who he is not because he made a funny noise.

Same. And I'll always see it that way.
Yeah. The original film has a strange relationship with its supplemental material. Heck, a viewer would never know what a T-16 looked like unless they paid damn close attention and put two and two together.
Obi-Wan supposedly screaming like a dragon makes NO sense.. Surely the Tuskens know what the beast is supposed to look like and surely they can tell the difference between a large dragon and an old man in a hooded robe waving his arms around. I mean, they all turn and SEE HIM COMING! They run because they know who he is and what he is capable of. That's why "they'll soon be back and in greater numbers."

In response to what exactly?

Their fear of Obi-Wan is more interesting from a storytelling perspective, as well. He's lived in the wastelands for twenty years at that point. They probably had a few encounters where Obi-Wan owned house.
I thought the same way, myself. The Tuskens made all sorts or snorts and grunts -- why not a long, wailing siren of alarm?
I still accept krayt dragons as canon, though.

Yeah, but that creature is very silent, you see.
Whatever became of that prop skeleton, anyway?

It was actually left there when filming wrapped in '76. Some fans visiting the Tunisian locations decades later reported finding bits of it still buried in the sand dunes. Others have gotten their hands on a few pieces.

Still, that is not a Krayt Dragon. That is an ex-Krayt Dragon.
No, no, it's uh... resting. He's probably pining for the Jundland Wastes.
It's not quite dead. It's getting better.
Seeing the movie as a kid I too thought the sound was the sand people and not a Jedi making the call of a "never actually seen or heard in any Star Wars ever" beast (you do fight one in KOTOR though). I feel that living there for so long, he would have some sort of agreement, or history with them to warrant such a response.
The need for him to make that call every time he wants a sand peoples to flee would start a "cried wolf" effect to which they would learn anyway that they are encountering something more scary than a Krayt Dragon, an exiled Jedi. which goes back to point one, why front as a Krayt Dragon if you can pull the Jedi card and cause very loud frightening screams followed by top speed fleeing by sand people all the time. Seems weird to me. Pun intended.
