Poita mentioned Kino is getting something wrong but didn’t elaborate.

Besides the color correction (removing the yellowishness) we also made the following corrections and adjustments to create our 161 Minute cut of the Theatrical version:

The “flip cut” transition/optical wipe from “Tuco talking to Blondie and taking a bite of his cigar to being hung” was restored to its original version
The fadeout to black of the “gun shop owner with the sign in his mouth” scene is now a cut to exodus scene.
The fadeout of the “Blondie passing out as Tuco is bringing him water” scene happens exactly 1 second later than how it was on old MGM DVD release of the Theatrical Cut.
The dissolve from “night” scene to “coach arriving at the mission” scene now fades up from black
The shot of the train leaving the station (with Tuco and Wallace on it) was supposedly longer in the US theatrical cut, before cutting directly to Tuco in the train and not dissolving out earlier to the early morning camp scene – Our 4K of the 161 minute cut matches the old MGM DVD of the theatrical cut exactly.

Well, looks as though I should also check out a specific thread on another forum I’m a member of.
Hoping the mono tracks will be lossless.
Still keeping the R1 DVD Sergio Leone Anthology set and both of the newer remastered MGM BDs (One in the set with incorrect mono and stand-alone with corrected.) even when I do get the KINO.

Aw man I hope this project is still happening. Would love to see the Leone Cut if that is even possible.

I haven’t posted here in a very long time. The project remained live and well and is finally finished.

Check out the podcast released today where members of this preservation project were kindly invited by Devan Scott & Will Ross of Film Formally to talk about the history of home releases of this film, a bit about this project and our contribution to the upcoming Kino UHD release:

http://sadhillmedia.com/filmformally/s3e10-gbu

You may recall a news article that highlights Will & Devan’s efforts to preserve the International Cut. The article caught the attention of Kino who contacted them, and they put Kino’s people in touch with us to help out with restoration of the International Cut using the MGM/L’Immagine Ritrovata 4K master available to them and filling in some spots with our 35mm scans.

Here’s the link to their National Post article:

Yeah I read that article good job on it! I will look forward to seeing what comes out. Well done to all involved I wish this sort of magic happened more often.

You deserve access to many vaults of film as do many others to realise the dream.

Congrats on the preservation! Been curious about its status for a few years now.

Is there any news on the project? I briefly skimmed the above articles (congratulations on the acclaim!), and it has me itching even more to see your project. 😃

It’s so great when the work of fan preservationists is recognized by the people putting out official releases. I just ordered the 4k Disc. I’ve only seen the extended cut of this movie so I’m excited to see it how US audiences first experienced it!

I don’t believe so. The Kino Lorber version is close, but different elements.

Incorrect. It’s the USA Theatrical version, 162 minutes, on the Kino Lorber 4K+BD. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Good-the-Bad-and-the-Ugly-4K-Blu-ray/283312/ https://www.kinolorber.com/product/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-4k-uhd
There’s a longer cut released in Italy on 4K+BD with a fugly piss yellow filter, but there’s that. It’s 175 minutes https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Il-Buono-il-Brutto-il-Cattivo-4K-Blu-ray/300959/
Both are SDR aka BT.709 colorspace.
