The Enderverse (WAS: Finally! Ender's Game emerges from Development Hell!) — Page 3

I'm reserving the judgment, of course, but I'm sort of on georgec's side. Too pristine looking, I don't know. And tim, I can only imagine that...well, hmmm. People who know the book know what happens? Or those who don't...don't have a clue? But Kingsley can't top his Iron Man 3 performance.

The blue elephant in the room.

And finally, the last part of the trailer: WHY WOULD YOU PUT THAT IN THE TRAILER???
Here's what I said: "Oh nice, they put the ending of the movie right on the trailer. Thanks, guys."

I'll need to watch it again, I tried to watch it with my wife, but she kept insisting that Ender is played by Matthew Lillard's son. "Is that Matthew Lillard's son?" "I don't think so." "Are you sure?" "It just said his last name is Butterfield." "He looks a lot like Matthew Lillard."

Butterfield's been talking on reddit, and he (as well as others) made the point that if you haven't read the book, you won't understand why that scene's significant (so it's okay), and if you have, you'll like seeing it (which I did, spoiler concerns notwithstanding). So, okay.

The important question, in my mind: How long is the movie after that scene?

I agree, either you understand the significance so you knew it was coming anyway, or you don't know so you don't know.

It's fine.

Oh Kingsleys Iron Man 3 performance was nothing but a pimple on the arse of his performance in Sexy Beast. And Frink btw if your still after ideas for ROTR, ever thought about using Kryten from Red Dwarf as a voice over for Greivous?

Long enough for Harrison to tell him "IT WAS EARTH ALL ALONG!" and Ender to fall down screaming that they blew it up, damn them.

Thanks but I've got my Grevious voice, and I've never seen a Red Dwarf episode.

I'd highly recommend Red Dwarf if you've never seen it. It's a cult British sci fi comedy from the 80's and 90's. Very well written and very funny. There were 10 series!

A Simpson's reference I get?! (only because my roommate sang that song every time anyone mentioned "Planet of the Apes". Or monkeys. Or "Rock Me Amadeus". Or The Simpsons.)

I've never read the book(s) before so I can't really comment on the way it was visualised there, but is it just me or does every sci-fi movie look the same now?? It's the same style of design from Star Trek Into Darkness to that Tom Cruise movie. Looks kinda bland.

I do know about the ending though, and that was a pretty dumb thing to put in the trailer.

Ill agree with Penguino that it has a 'been there done that' kinda look.

Reviews for the movie are pretty heartening.  I was a little nervous this would suck, but I believe that in spite of controversial views, the film adaptation of OSC's most popular book is bound to be pretty successful.

JEDIT: As I suspected, though, its difficulty in translating to film.  I never expected it to be as enjoyable or deep as the book, and it looks like I may be right.  I just want it to be enjoyable.

I enjoyed it as well. Though I think they really botched the ending.

*SPOILER REVIEW OF THE MOVIE IN COMPARISON TO THE BOOK*

You both summed it up for me.  I enjoyed it and I feel they kept the main moral premises, but it was too rushed.  It might have been better to pull a Harry Potter stunt and split it into two movies.  But with what they had, one of my biggest grievances was the travel to the Formic (some might use the term bugger) colony world while they were keeping an eye on the homeworld.  We were not so powerful.  We had an inferior fleet that had left years and years before, and all battles were real.  I'm not even sure if such was the case in this movie.  In the book, Ender fought the Formics back across several worlds, but in the movie, I'm unsure if all the other battles were real, or if all but the last were simulations.  How did they get to the alien world so quickly?  Traveling at supralight speeds was not possible in the Enderverse (as it currently is not in the real universe) except when a method to exit this dimension and return was discovered thousands of years later.  Even traveling near light speed, it would have taken decades, yet there was no time dilation, an important aspect of the Ender stories as well.  Without that, it seems that while the movie left the story open much as the book did, it's altered the nature of the universe so drastically as to preclude the possibility of future films (not that I think it would be wise to adapt Speaker for the Dead or any others anyway).

Hmmm...que mas?  Oh yes, it was disappointing not to see more of Ender's battles.  I really think it would have been better to split it, because Ender is brilliant, and we don't see enough of it in the movie.  He just seems like a notch above the rest, not the incredible genius he truly is.  It would have been good to have a whole film devoted to battle school and his fights in the battle room, with a second devoted to command school and his exhaustion and dreams with the "simulations."

Still, it was a beautiful movie to watch, still taught the same lessons, and the battle room we did see was fun.  Just wishing there was more.  I don't mean to be harsh because overall I enjoyed it.  I just felt it was weaker than it should have been.

I just remembered I forked out for a OSC computer game too, Advent Rising.

It's also rather good, it even has buggers in it :-D

My first thought was why is Han Solo in Ender's Game, lol.

Seems Harrison Ford is in everything these days,  Anchorman II, Expendables III etc.

They really needed to work the queen's speech into the ending somehow. As it was, you could tell everyone in my theater was confused at the end. They were left wondering why Ender suddenly became an idiot and was trying to save this species that almost wiped humanity out of existence.

UPDATE:

If you're a fan of the books you're going to want to watch this.
