The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie. Or is it? — Page 4

I don't think the whole thing was pointless...but obviously you completely missed the point. Yay for you! Big pat on the back.

I never made any claim that Leia said the "laugh it up fuzzball" line, I just said that I thought it was humorous when I was a kid, along with Leia's walking carpet line. Now I don't fine either one very funny. It is childish humor. At any rate, the fuzzball line is perfectly in place for Han's character, he doesn't seem the types who chokes on non PC language, and Chewie is his best friend so it is acceptable.

And my argument stands, Leia's derogatory comment towards Wookies is very out of character for what Lucas ultimately made her character to be. It is more evidence of how extreme the changes to the over all universe became with each additional film.

Racist?

lol, someone on FE.org tried to make that point and was dead serious.

Whoa, when did we sink into the realm of sexual attraction? Leia could be all about hairy cock; she just isn't against using derogatory language to refer to his species.

Leia's "Walking carpet" line grates on me. So does "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookie!". What if Chewie was African? Would she say "Would somebody get this black guy outta my way?" and "I'd just as soon kiss an 'S'-word*!" ? It may all seem silly to some, but it bugs me.

Also,  to whoever said that Leia is a stuck up snob in SW, I disagree. She's a military leader who's mostly only posing as royalty to disguise her real motives. She's been captured and tortured and now she's being rescued by some guys who don't know what the hell they're doing. I'd be grumpy to.

Thank you! By some of the other comments, I was thinking everyone thought I was a bit nuts. Glad to see I am not alone.

That was me. I guess that is a pretty fair take on the situation.

Snooki?

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

I agree.  Captured, family & home destroyed, tortured, rescued by a kid and a pirate, Ben killed - she gets a pass for anger and being unfriendly.

Almost being crushed to death a garbage compactor, and wading around up to your knees in who knows what would also sour anyone's rotten mood even further!

And there's absolutely nothing wrong about kissing a Wookiee. ;)

You guys know Wookies aren't real, right? :p

I agree with you TV Frink.  Are you guys seriously arguing that there is a tinge of racism by Princess Leia because she is making snide remarks about Wookies?

The next thing you guys are going to complain about is that Han Solo hates old people because he said, "Where did you dig up that old fossil!"

:)

I stand corrected.  I officially encourage everyone to protest the blatant racism in Star Wars by never watching it again.  We should all probably stop coming here as well, since this site apparently supports a racist movie.

Adywan better take all of the racism out of ESB:R

Mostly innuendo. "Look at the size of that thing!"

"Get on top of it!" "I'm trying!"

"You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!"

"She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

Etc.

I don't know what's funnier - this post, or the fact that people thought it was serious.

The whole "walking carpet" thing is an excellent example of why films are important cultural artifacts, and windows into the time they were created. There is no way that line would be in SW if the movie were made today, for the reasons described in this thread.  But those were different times, and such comments weren't considered questionable then.  This, George, is one reason why we preserve them.

I'm surprised Lucas didn't remove/change the line for the same reason he made Han shoot second.

And to answer the original question... in my opinion, SW was the better movie.

I'm surprised Lucas didn't put a disclaimer before the film, warning people that Star Wars contains brief racism towards wookiees...

Hey! Maybe he's done that for the blu-rays! And also included a intro by

Wookiee Goldberg.

Wow, people really need to relax if they think Leia is being racist. And if she is, so what? I think the line is funny, not ha-ha funny, but funny. The comment about it being there if SW was made today makes you think what kind of a world we live in...

They aren't questionable now.  If the movie were made today, I see no reason why the line wouldn't still be in there.

A little known fact is that Alderaan was a highly racist planet.

That's why Leia shows so much antagonism to...well, now that I think about it, just about everybody.

Tarkin apparently smells. Darth Vader "belongs on a leash". Lando, in spite of the fact that Han vouches for him, isn't deemed trustworthy. Chewbacca is consistently subjected to abuse. Yet she suddenly "loves" Luke when she finds out they're related, even after initially mocking his height - though maybe this is because Luke shares her views. He does, after all, show a touch of racism to poor old Yoda, assuming he couldn't possibly be a great warrior.

Is this the best female role model Lucas can come up with?

I suspect Star Wars would have ended up like this if Gary Kurtz hadn't been involved:

And let's not even get started on the prequels.

I wonder what Lucas had to say after the first screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Probably thought it ended on a bit of a downer, what with the good guys losing and all.

The line about Chewie isn't racist in any way. She just made a snide comment based on his appearance. If he had glasses and she said, "would someone get four eyes here out of my way," that wouldn't necessarily make her prejudiced against people with glasses. If wookies were short and she said, "would someone get this shrimp out of my way," it wouldn't make her prejudiced against little people either. It's just a sassy remark and it fits her character very well.
