The Dark Knight Movie Discussion (July 18th, 2008)

Ok, who here have seen any previews for this movie?  This movie looks freakin awesome!  Havent read any spoilers, but have just heard some spoiler-free reviews, and they are hooking this movie up saying Ledger is great in this.   They are liking it to a cross between a comicbook movie and Heat, in which is really has a gritty, realistic feel to it, rather then the typical by the numbers comic book movie.

Haven't cared about a summer movie for a long time, including that boring, nostalgia driven movie by those Lucas/Spielberg guys & Indiana Jones IV, but I will be there opening weekend for this one.

Anyone else hyped for Christopher Nolans second Batman film?

I'm pretty sure this is going to be the best film of the summer. While I didn't manage to catch Iron Man, I did see The Incredible Hulk last weekend and walked away unimpressed. Great special effects with zero story and zero real drama just don't cut it. I've heard nothing but good things about Iron Man though.

I haven't seen Batman Begins since it was in the theater, so I'll be gearing up for the sequel by purchasing the Blu-ray release. Can't wait.

The thing that bothered me the most on the original Batman begins dvd release was no audio commentary by Nolan and Bale.

Will the blu have this?

If not i don't see any reason to rebuy the film i already own on dvd. Other than subtantially improved picture and soundtrack.

I have the single disc release of the dvd. I rented the 2 disc so called special edition and there were like no real special features on the second disc. Other than a lame digital comic book and the pre release materials on tv and in the digital press kit.

The one reason i am rebuying Casino Royale in the rumored november release ia that it will Have the Martin Campbell commentary, a real making of, and the deleted scenes.

Dark Knight and Quantum of solace should make up for the pains of having to endure a crapy 4th Indiana Jones movie. Iron Man also is a really good comic book movie.

I have heard rave reviews from the comic book community on the new hulk, most of what was based on the fight scene at the end and the incredibly Expenive cgi. Nobody ever metioned story or romance being in the movie, which is suprising since that is how they have advertised the movie to the non comic book crowd.

"Incredible Hulk" was good, but you can tell it was basically stripped for parts as far as character development goes to overcompensate for the Ang Lee film.  It needed an extra 20-30 minutes.

But TDK looks BAD ASS!

Oh, I am so looking forward to this film. The orignal Batman Begins was one of the best films of 2005. This film could possibly be better than the first and there is that likely chance that it will be the best film of the year. And right now I'd love to see Christopher Nolan do another one too.

Why does my picture keep going away?  That really sucks.

And yes, I know, but rumor has it -

POSSIBLE SPOILERS, HIGHLIGHT TO READ:

Spoiler:
... that his arc is wrapped up by the end of the film (i.e., he dies).  I sincerely hope that isn't true, though.

Thanks, Jay, didn't know we had spoiler tags now.

Hmm, I might try make it to a midnigth screening. I came late to the first film bit i wanna get in on the ground floor this time around.

Looks to be the most anticipate film of the year...at least so far. According to Wikipedia the film will be released on July 17, 2008 in Australia, on July 18, 2008 in North America, and on July 25, 2008 in the United Kingdom.

What I've been wondering is whether Heath Ledger will win any type of awards for his performance, Posthumously.

And Hotrod, You can see in the trailer a shot of Harvey looking messed up, So at least physically the transformation appears to take place.

For me, 1989 Batman will always be my favorite, by far. The second Burton outing was just to big of a mess. The Schumaker films were all but unwatchable.

I enjoyed Batman Begins, but thought they spent way too much time on history and backstory.  I don't care to know how or why he learned martial arts or the entire story behind the batmobile. I much prefer the darkness and mystery of Batman89.  Which brings me to my only serious criticism of  the Nolan films;  the  high-contrast cinematography.  I really don't like how well-lit and sharp everything is.  For me, that literal removal of the darkness also takes away the character's darkness. Dark Knight seems even more well-lit\high-contrast than Begins.

I've been a Batman nerd since the 60s.  When I was a little kid, I never missed Batman on TV every week.  I had the comic books, made mt own capes, etc.  For me, when Batman89 was released, it was what Batman had always been in my imagination.  To me, it was perfect - Keaton, his portrayal of Wayne, the Batcave, the darkness, the mystery - all of it. Not to mention, the coolest Batmobile there has ever been.

Unless a bunch of people want to go after work one night, I'll probably wait for Dark Knight on cable.

Eh, I'd say they were well into the unwatchable territory.

I loved the history and backstory. I would have loved an entire film devoted to practically just that. The best part of the film was the sword fighting on ice during his training (very dramatic). A few of the details—like purchasing his batsuit pieces—weren't needed, but I even appreciated those parts as trying to add realism. Essentially, Batman is all about self determination, self discipline, detective work, brilliant resourcefulness, and quick thinking. Batman Begins was the first Batman movie to actually capture that focus for its story and that easily made it my favorite.

I understand what you mean about the cinematography though. Batman begins was very straightforward in that regard while Tim Burton's version of Batman is more fun to watch.
Then the straightforward-ness of the movie descended into pure chaos during the fighting scenes with close, meaningless shots.

Well it seems that TDK is already screening here in Oz. I'm planning to go see it in a few hours. I wan't really expecting it until tomorrow.

I'll chime in with my thoughts later on - sans spoilers of course.

Oh and Hotrod - I'm not joking.

;)

Happy TDK day.

Thursday at 12:01am for me (or should I say Friday) ... and I don't work tomorrow OR Thursday so I don't know WHAT the hell I'm going to do to occupy myself and not go insane ...

I just finished rewatching Begins, as well.  I might go back and watch ALL of them (even the '66 Adam West film) for the hell of it over the next two days.

Patience young 'rod. Trust me it's well worth the wait.

What can I say that wont ruin the film?...Empty your bladder before you go in, This is a looong movie ;) The less you know going in the better, and if you've watched all the trailers then you probably still know next to nothing, which is good. This movie has an interesting story to tell and as long as it was there was never a down moment, never was i thinking 'spin on'...

One thing i did really notice was that impact sounds like punched sounded really beefed up, almost to the extend of indiana jones.

I don't want to say too much until others chime in, other than, Yes this movie is as good as you are hoping it to be and probably a good deal better. Easily better than Iron man [which i LOVED], and yes it does soften the blow of enduring lesser films that failed to deliver [Indy 4 I'm looking squarely at you!]

And finally Heath, I actually had to sit there and tell myself "this is Heath Ledger". The man playing the joker was totally unrecognizeable to me. Early oin I had doubts, I think we all did, But it's a portrayal of the character that is above all else very entertaining.

There were rumblings of a possible Terminator 4 teaser attached but sadly this was not the case.

if anyone has any questions, I'll try answer them without plot spoilers...But it's probably better just to wait it out.

Yeah man, I've read nothing but super positive reviews for this film. No spoilers, just reviews. Can't wait. Still miffed that we got stiffed at having to wait a whole week after the rest of the bloody world to see this film.
