Looking over EddieDeans The Clone Wars: Refocused spreadsheet creation for the first time!..

Just watched Prologue: Life and Death & a few of the first episodes and coming from someone that simply just couldn’t get into The Clone Wars, This way of watching them just simply works. I’ll give my full review at IFDB once I’ve finished it all. Thank you EddieDean for this 👍

Thanks dear ❤️

I’m a data analyst, I do love putting together a good information-rich spreadsheet that’s minimally overwhelming. Using colour VERY carefully is the key!

Bingeing season 1 and I’m very impressed by the amount of thought and care that has gone into this. Most of the alterations are seamless which I can’t say of most fanedits, and it’s without a doubt the definitive way to experience Clone Wars on repeat viewings. Thanks for your hard work EddieDean!

btw I noticed a minor typo at the start of s01e08 - “shipyards at Sullust have been launched by a su[r]prise attack”

RELEASED - S04E06 - THE HAND OF GREED (v2.1)

  • RELEASE VERSION.
  • Our sixth episode of season four.
  • Comprising the original episodes An Old Friend, The Rise of Clovis, and Crisis at the Heart.
  • Also including the video ‘Ahsoka’s Decision’ created by Cinematic Captures on Youtube (used with permission and fully credited), itself a fan-enhanced version of a scene from the unfinished episode In Search of the Crystal from the unfinished Utapau arc.
  • Running 67 minutes.
  • DOWNLOAD LINK is in the tracker spreadsheet, PM me for access.
  • Note: It’s recommended that you download this before watching, rather than streaming it directly from Google Drive.

This is my longest single episode yet. The Scipio arc isn’t quite brilliant, but it has a lot of good moments, and it does a lot of good work to give us the state of the war and many of the major players as we head towards the show’s conclusion. I didn’t cut it down into shorter episodes because there’s no simple breakpoint - it’s one single narrative and treating it as one keeps it all in focus as the plot progresses.

I included ‘Ahsoka’s Decision’ (even though its animation style is slightly different) and modified a little dialogue to do as much as I could to have the loss of Ahsoka visibly affect Anakin in this series - something we didn’t have before due to the show’s cancellation and revival. The new scene hasn’t got quite the same aesthetic, and it’s a little lower visual quality, but it’s the best I can do for now.

Noteworthy changes:

  • The episode is titled ‘The Hand of Greed’, emphasising both the main plot and Anakin’s possessiveness toward Padmé.
  • The episode is placed here as the first time we see Anakin after the loss of Ahsoka, again to emphasise that angle.
  • We use ‘Ahsoka’s Decision’ as this show’s only cold open, mainly to give it a place to exist in this narrative but also to give its unique animation style some room.
  • The crawl gives us the Scipio and Anakin/Padmé context in a simple way.
  • The remainder of the episode is largely the three original episodes stitched together. They weren’t amazingly paced but there’s very little that isn’t necessary. (Though I am open to suggestions!)
  • I changed a little of the dialogue when Obi-Wan visits Anakin’s quarters to add a little more to the Ahsoka angle and try to lightly imply that Anakin’s jealousy here may be related to the loss of Ahsoka.
  • I removed Padmé’s guard asking Anakin if Rush Clovis’ account of the assault was true, to cut Anakin acting a little suprised, which might have raised suspicion.
  • I removed a light reference to the connection between Palpatine and Sidious, which I’m avoiding making explicit in this show.

This now lightly forms a trilogy intended to give a bit more weight to Ahsoka’s loss in this order - Mortis, Ahsoka’s Fall, and Scipio (with one break in the middle to allow Anakin a breather offscreen).

Onwards to the Order 66 arc!

Hi Eddie, wanted to say a huge thank you for your work on this project - I’m super excited to watch through this and finally get my friend into TCW with it. With that said, I’ve been following the thread and have some feedback for the quoted episode. The line you inserted from the Ahsoka’s decision deleted scene stands out quite a bit to me, the quality of the original audio from the deleted episode is poor, maybe they hadn’t fully mixed it in the animatic that was released. Anyway, I took the liberty of editing the audio of the inserted line slightly. Please tell me what you think. I’ll provide the edited audio export from audacity too.

in-scene comparison: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dZqbphWOmXwbw2DVmApRpObRq3Iv22Z_/view?usp=drive_link

pre-edited audacity audio file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10VPYSX1p_VgdjFeUck-I9liUd4-a8ftN/view?usp=drive_link

I’m actually not a huge fan of inserting the line, mostly because Anakin doesn’t really react to it. Maybe an audible sigh/grunt from Anakin would help. There’s a perfect pause for one when it cuts from the over the shoulder of Obi to the wide of him, with Anakin and the tool in the foreground. Anyway, hope you are well and thanks once more.

Is there no better way to download these other than one by one from the spreadsheet? no folder to bulk select?

I copied the spreadsheet column with the links into a notepad style app, double checked it was a list of one link per line and then added the list to jdownloader. That worked. Couple of files hit a bandwidth limit but i think that’s a per file throttling on Google’s side if the file has been downloaded too much

Thank you, @EddieDean !

Like other posters, I originally had a hard time getting into the series. I’ve come back to it now as part of my viewing of the Skywalker Saga, and your edits really tighten it up and make it flow better. I enjoyed the first few SS episodes so much that I started adding in more of the clones and Ahsoka, then quickly just decided to start over and watch the whole recommended path. (I’m still not too excited about the Maul/Savage/witchcraft plot, it seems a cop-out like adding a kid to a sitcom, not your fault.)

After finishing the movies, I’ve added in the optional episodes, and watched some extras (droids), which reaffirmed my initial lack of enthusiasm for the original edits, and reinforced the quality of your edits and recommendations.

Thanks for the spreadsheet, too, I glazed over a bit reading the thread, but the spreadsheet is clear and concise, at least to my way of thinking.

A few minor nits to pick, don’t matter really, but the first 2 are easy to change if desired:

Capital letters sort before lowercase, and most of season 5 filenames use capital “S05” which sort before lower “s01” etc.

I submit that s03e01 The Politics of War deserves at least a “?” or optional choice for the Skywalker Saga since it fits it so well with the theme of the Prequels and really does a better job on the topic than the movies.

“Lightsaber Lost” appears in the spreadsheet with column G as s02e00b but the filename has s02e01b. As a standalone plot, it could slot in either place. Also, in the opening crawl, Coruscant has an extra “s”.

Thanks buddy, I’m really glad you’re enjoying it! Trust me on the Maul/witches plotline - it gets VERY good. I was a doubter at first when Savage showed up. But it goes places.

Thanks very much for your nitpick notes! I’ve renamed those capital filenames to lower case. And I agree with your thoughts on Politics of War - I’ve now marked it as a maybe for Skywalker saga, with a viewing note that it suits the prequel era well.

I’ve noted your suggestions for LL too, for when I catch that next pass.

God why didn’t I think of this? I had to do it all 2 episodes at a time. Well, now I know lol.

Hi Eddie (or anyone else here with knowlegdge on the subjeect). Sorry ahead of time for this long post, have a few questions.

I am diving into the world of Star Wars fan edits. My wife and I are about to watch through the series. I have never seen the various animated series, and my wife has not seen those, nor Revenge of the Sith or any of the live action series.

We were quite daunted by the thought of 14 seasons of animated content between TCW, Rebels, Bad Batch, Tales of, even the live action shows on top of that with some of the filler they have. I say we haven’t watched it, truthfully we’ve both seen a few episodes here and there in passing and felt we would definitely not be able to stomach that much animated content in the writing style of the Filoni-verse.

However, we were both intrigued by the idea of movie cuts because it seems much more digestible (might take a couple weeks instead of months). I especially wanted to do this after I decided we were going to watch acbagels Mandalorian and BoBF movie cuts. Ideally I was aiming to just watch movie cuts of all the series. ((the only thing I didn’t see working was Tales of the Jedi, but its so small I didnt see it being a big deal)).

However when I asked for suggestions on reddit, it seems everyone loves your Clone Wars Refocused series.

So I ask, do you have any suggestions for my dilemma? Not that its your job to sell me on your edit, but for what I want to do with my watch through, do you think your edit would still be best? Or do you have another editor you can suggest that might work better for what we had in mind?

Also, I wanted to watch the pre-TPM Tales of episodes before that movie, so basically at the start of my watch through. Would this work for a full series watch through in your opinion? I know you use some of the Ahsoka Tales of episdoes in your edit, do you do anything with the Dooku episodes? Cause I know they aren’t right in the timeline.

Thanks for all your work. Your edit does sound awesome, I just don’t want it to be jarring or too much in the conext of us just doing movies otherwise.

Hi Patali! I can’t speak for Eddie but I can speak as a fan and a faneditor. I would tend to avoid movie cuts for the animated shows as a first watch. I feel the movie edits work better for the live action series as they tend to follow the trend of one ark per season, the animated shows however tend to follow a few different ark’s throughout.

I’d think you’d find the most enjoyment from tv style edits such as Eddie’s as it takes the content and makes it more approachable. It cuts down drastically on the watch time and presents it in a way where if you’re not enjoying an ark, for the most part, you can skip it! This is much harder to do with the original series and difficult to do with movie style edits. On top of this for Eddie’s edit, there is a spreadsheet that covers different watch orders for what you’re interested in!

I hope this helps answer your questions 😃

I think it does, thanks for your comment. Looking over Eddie’s edit this past day, I believe now I am leaning towards it, as I saw he also found a way to incorporate some of the 2003 series as a prologue. My wife is a big classic animation fan, so this excited her to know she could enjoy that series with the rest of TCW.

Today we just watched in chronological order, the first two Dooku Tales of episodes, TPM, the following Dooku episode, the baby Ahsoka episode (I put it before episode 2 because I felt it worked better there), then AOTC. We’re both loving it so far, TPM and AOTC were definitely improved by those Dooku Tales of episodes. So I think we will go with your suggestion. I am still a bit concerned about Rebels and bad Batch, they seem even more geared towards the silly aspects so I’ll have to find edits for those and see how to work them in.

But if anyone else has other thoughts it would be appreciated. Thanks all

Patali,

If you are looking for a very solid Rebels edit that removes the silliness you referenced, then I would strongly recommend asking g00b if he knows one that solves most of those issues. I suspect he may know of an edit out there that removes the childishness, filler episodes, and gives you the high quality “meat” of the show so you and the wife can enjoy it in the quickest way possible.

g00b definitely knows an editor who really put his heart into the edit of the show, and went through multiple versions where he always kept providing constant updates to make the show as close to perfection as it possibly can. 😉

As for the Clone Wars, I do not have anything further to add because g00b’s post effectively why the EddieDean Clone Wars is by far the best bet. I will say this though, Eddie clearly spent a significantly larger amount of time editing his Clone Wars series than most other editors will do on a movie or TV show. He put his heart and soul into it. That, I believe, was a major factor as to why his edit is a masterpiece.

Idea for S03E00 - Dreams of Destiny:
The episode works really well (where I’m at watching so far) but I think a vignette effect around the FoD dream scenes would really work to hit home your watching a memory/dream and lesson the sudden change in animaton styles somewhat.

Before vignette effect

After vignette effect

I haven’t done much lately since the show does work as ‘complete’ as-is, with no major issues, and because I’ve been busy with life stuff. But I’m still very actively recording all notes, suggestions, and preferences, and am constantly reflecting on the show, ready for when I have more time.
