A new establishing shot would need to have something that the audience can instantly be informed that its 'the bad guy's base', I don't think each establishing shot should be bits and pieces, this would confuse the viewer (always keep in mind this could be their first screening of this movie)

I love this info-graphic like Mr J :) (why the hell the death star always is lighted from the left?)
3 establishing shots are not many but i dont think that showing close ups of the station will require only 3 shots ;)
The point is how we made a shot that is recognizable but at the same time is cryptic with its content?

I like the idea of putting Tarkin alone there, to emphatize the autocracy that the Empire represents. Could you illuminate the room a little more, using imperial lighting on some walls or something ?
I thought it. THe white areas/light might ruin the composition that you need to focus on the planet and then tarkin.
I still need to add the missing control panels that add a bit of a life.

Feel free to follow that project for future images :)
These are pretty handy too :)

Thanks Angel, you always seem to know where the best images are.

Shame they incorrectly raised the trenches at the top
The second version looks much better Jaitea (the right scale but filling the screen).
The inclusion of closer craft (obviously looking smaller) also sells this shot.
It's still a bit too uniformly lit for my taste (a bit like ILM's work for Star Trek III) but that's a subjective judgment.
Ady, I agree, an otherwise lovely model ruined by a scale throwing detail.
The sheen on the model (especially around the dish) would need to scrubbed down to be used in filming so presumably anyone taking that on would correct the trenches anyway but that's a lot of unnecessary work which should have been caught before going into production.

I thought it looked really good... But it seems like the frame rate is higher in the last shot. Is it 23.976?
At the very least, the Star Destroyer is moving much faster in the last shot, which is jarring and doesn't make sense.

The SDs in ANH are going ridiculous fast for a ship of their size. Even its space and all the science stuff they has to go slower to give the illusion that they are massive.
And there are many shots with them going fast :/

Added another SD....just to see what it would be like:

No the whole project is 29.97...all sourse components correspond.......maybe youtube?

Well the SD's speed was based on the original footage.......I think it matches.....dunno?

Totally possible. Also hard to make out frame rates over the computer I've noticed. Still looks good.
Oh and love the new shot. Even more interesting than the previous.
Thanks, but I still want to try and make it less CG looking....any ideas?
Either that or replace the first SD with CG model

Of course that!
Considering you have a so bright planet next to death star and the SD some of the blue illumination/reflection should hit the structures. Either go with a more subtle planet and keep the OT feel of absolute colors or you can put the ambient light on the surfaces of the ships :)
More realistic ways? render in passes and then composite them for maximum control.
Renders that being rendered in the final resolution always give a clear look that have many details. Which is something that we DONT want :)
Cheating of either rendering in higher rez 4-8K and then downsize or either render in slight smaller rez to get the film effects is a wise solution for anything that looks artificial.
Sharp halos, small artifacting noise blury to sharpen results blended highlights eveything that a camera can produce and not a renderer is always welcome :)

OK will give it a go.....I have some ideas to tweaking some of Adywan's Revisited/Purist Versions, I got permission from the great guy to use his masterpieces as a base, the plans I have are not too radical.

Nothing much, mainly fixing what doesn't appeal to me....CG Dewbacks, hangers full of Troopers etc
J
It would have been better if the room full of troopers was a dormitory or trooper's mess room rather than a hanger.
I wonder if some guys like Ming could pull that off.
Maybe an editing genius can do a hybrid Dewback that's seen on the distance as in the OOT but moves his head around and roars as in the SE. I'm talking about the first shot we ever see the thing.
Just making sure I read that right.
Jaitea you are going to be doing an ANH edit with Ady's Revisited as a base?
If so that is fantastic. Your work and clips are what I always check for in this thread. Speaking of which, the last clip was excellent. The scaling is perfect now. Though the planet is realistically larger than the DS you cropped it in a manner that the scale and threat of the DS remains strong in the frame.
I'm watching at work so I don't know if you also have Ady's Empire theme music in there.

Yeah, basically I'm trying to remove most of the SE elements that LucasFilm added....(apart from Falcon firing up in Mos Eisley, some of Mos Eisley & X wing improvements.....maybe some more bits.....can't remember).....but keeping most of the fixes and additions Adywan did.
I don't know, maybe I've seen the original movie that many times that I always get taken out of the movie now by any of the SE elements, but strangely not by Adywan's additions.....they settle into the movie, almost as though they were filmed back in the 70's.
J
What are you going to use for the unaltered shots? You can use my DeEd if you like :-)
That would be a dream come true Harmy! thank you!
What frame-rate is your project?
I'm using Adywan's Revisited & Purist Edits both NTSC 29.98
I'm afraid thats gonna be the projects settings.....ole' Standard Def
