The "9000" Saga Edit (outdated thread) — Page 2

Hal,

Didn't see it mentioned earlier, but what did you do to fix the saber shots? Replace them with older source material, or actually re-rotoscope the shots? Just curious how much you've dived into the process.

BTW, you may want to hold of on re-doing TPM until the HD transfer comes out (whenever that ends up being). For now, the less-than-ideal transfer that we have will be my basis for DVD until the HD/BluRay debacle is settled and the hi-def format is standard.

Yes, I will definatley re-do the TPM edit if rumors about a new digital transfer are true.

And about fixing ESB sabers, I just adjusted the brightness and contrast of the questionable shots. ROTJ sabers are a bit more of a problem, but I handled them the same way. ROTJ sabers were *pretty* messed up, and in my version they suck *less*.

Also in ROTJ, I'm toying with maybe toning down the blue tint across the whole film. But the re-encoding detracts from the picture quality. We'll see how it looks, Womble is exporting it as I type.

I know there's a laserdisc transfer that has the shot of Qui Gon saying "The situation has become much more complicated" wipe to the shot of Panaka walking past Jar Jar and Anakin in the Senate building. And there's no way to properly recreate this with the raw material on the DVD alone.

If anyone can post a decent-looking video clip of these shots, I can properly remove the air taxi sequence. If not, no big deal, it'll just still be in my edit.
Thanks if you can help!

My apologies for getting here a bit late but I have just discovered that I have a DVB copy of TPM that has the scenes you were looking for. The "TB Release" was posted on a.b.sw a few weeks ago and it is recorded from European Canal +

Here is a quote from the maker.........

Back in december 2001, european Canal+ aired the Special Editions and Phantom Menace on digital satellite.

These are the 1997 / 1999 cinematic versions of the movies, broadcast in anamorphic 2.35:1 with 2.0 sound,

If anyone wants more info, drop me a line.........

I would love that bit of footage!

Is it at all possible for you to run it through DVD Shrink or something and email that clip to me? That'd be great. I'm going to have to re-do TPM anyway, when the digital transfer is released.

It also has the original crowd shot as the two headed alien is announcing Sebulba at the Pod Race.

This is fantastic! Could you email that little clip to me? Or perhaps that wouldn't be convenient.

Either way, this is great

Wow that's great, THANK YOU!

Could you post the first clip of the Jedi council again, with the complete shot before and after it? Reason I ask is because it'd look weird to have it suddenly cut to another source in mid-shot.
But that is exactly what I needed, so if you can post the shots before and after "The Situation has become much more complicated" - "There is no stability, only polotics."

Thank you thank you!!!

Are there any other requests while I am at it??

No- just wanted to say thank you- I've been looking for that shot in widescreen in good quality for ages, to restore the original edition of TPM.

Thanks so much

No problem. I have very little video editting talent and will help out the talented ones all I can.

The talented and talentless form a symbiant circle. What happens to one of us will affect the other, you must understand this...........!!!???!!!???

Anyhow, as requested, here is the extended clip. It is a wee bit bigger than the original one and probably includes way too much but I was not taking any chances.

BTW. A big thanks to boba feta for the advanced DVD Shrink tutorial that allowed me to do these clips.

Just a quick note for interested parties (in restoring original cut of TPM): You don't need the shot of Watto cheering for Sebulba from the LD. It is present on the official DVD, Disc 2, during the extended scene (in anamorphic widescreen).

True, I included the Watto shot in my edit too.

It's not quite the "original" Sebulba intro, but closer.

When I went back to Womble Editor to patch in the shot and wipe to remove the air taxi sequence, I re-edited TPM all over from scratch. I think it's a lot better this time, and I did things a little different.
So that list on the first page might not be entirely accurate anymore.

A few things I did differently:
Overall better editing skill
removed Jar Jar's short spotlight after Qui Gon talks to Obi-Wan via commlink after leaving Watto's shop.
Removed Watto's line "and no one ELSE has a T14 hyperdrive, I promise you that!'
Removed Panaka's line "if we don't get the sheild generator fixed, we'll be sitting ducks"
Thanks to audio from 'BOTF', removed the "captain, look" dialogue. The ship just explodes without the crew freaking out.

This set of edits is drawing very close to being finished!

I just need clearance from a few more 'editors' who I borrowed some work from, and finish a few techincal difficulties with sound (#$*& %&# *$^ ^%#*!!!!) in TPM.

I'm very proud of the results, and have updated the original post with new information about the final changes I made, and other key information. This is looking up to be a fine edit.

On aotc did you reinstate padme's 'yes' line back in after she falls from the gunship? And remove the pointless bit of exposition at the end of Anakins revelation to padme in the garage on tatooine.

You should leave in the coughing for Grievous--it's okay as long as you establish in the opening crawl that he's a cyborg--he then becomes a wonderful little tool to foreshadow Anakin's destruction, instead of just another boss for the Episode 3 video game ("hit 'em in the center eye, R2!! aim carefully!!").
