Disagree. There’s a difference between not understanding there was a joke and not understanding what the joke was saying.

What? The point wasn’t that they didn’t know it was a parody, you made that clear, the point was that you claimed you explained the joke when all you did was tell us a joke existed and we just had to try figure it out, even though we don’t know what it’s referencing.

EDIT: Oh, you were replying to the last sentence in my post rather than the part that mattered. That doesn’t help the discussion at all.

Once the fact that it was a parody was brought up (which I understood immediately just by how long the topic creator has been here) anybody that’s been here longer than a few months should have gotten it. If you didn’t, I’m sorry to say it, but you’re just a wanker.

I don’t need to get the specific reference anyway, because I still found it a funny gag. Unless there wasn’t a specific reference, and it was just a generalized parody. Then I guess I got the whole joke.

Something I’d like to discuss further is what was mentioned in the AOTC thread regarding the foolishness being dragged into OT. http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/926446

I thought this was great, and as a relatively new member compared to nearly everybody else on the forum, I am curious what you all think on the subject, especially regarding what Silver Wook stated about perhaps making this site an invite only place.

I figured this was as good of a thread as any seeing as how it directly pertains to improving Off Topic, but sorry for not contributing anything specific to the 101 ways.

It would be sad if this place can’t get better without making it invite only. I mean, I was once a new member, and it would feel odd if the opportunity I had was taken away from people in the future (if they aren’t a-holes, that is).

I agree. An invite only system would keep out perfectly pleasant and friendly new users like Killer Queen, who has my favorite user name on the forum (tied with Ziggy Stardust and Frank Your Majesty).

Maybe we just need to enforce the rules a little more? Personal attacks, excessive profanity, etc. are all against the rules, so a few violations of them should get people banned. Even in Off Topic, though perhaps a little more leeway could be granted here, especially as regards profanity. Personal attacks just aren’t cool in general, but people seem to get away with them all the time, simply because they’re in Off Topic, or they’re only borderline offensive.

EDIT: And by “we”, I guess I mean SilverWook… 😛

I think Off Topic should be moderated the same as General Star Wars with the exception of allowing Off Topic posts (obviously) and then general profanity. But filthy trash such as Darth Id’s style of posting should get banned for sure. Not to tell the mods how to do their jobs, of course 😃

Off-topic isn’t nearly as entertaining as it used to be. Maybe wiping it clean and starting it from scratch would be a fun exploration of dynamics.

It’s because there’s very little silliness or creativity anymore. Most of those posters are long gone. It’s mostly complaining and the same old movie discussions now.
