TV question, please help

Hey all.

I am considering a new TV. Buget is tight so nothing spectacular. I am looking at a Panasonic 42" plasma 720p. How will standard DVDs look on this TV? I understand that they will up-scaled, what will the quality be like? I currently have a 5 year old 27" CRT. DVDs look great, but I want something bigger. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just got this T.V. on sale at Best Buy today.  I would not go for anything under 120Hz. With the larger size, I find the 60 HZ just can't cut it.

Why LCD? I thought plasma had better contrast ratio, faster response and wider viewing angle. I'm new to all this so I don't really know.

Yeah, but not the plasma you picked....sorry.

Panasonic is fine but go for at least a 1080p set....720p sets are antiquated by now....

Rule of thumb is...

1. Bright room, either lit with sunlight or brigth lights go with an LCD

2. Darker room, setup for movie viewing, low level lighting or non at all, go for the plasma.

It all depends on how you're going to spend the majority of your viewing time...

Yeah, I agree with vbangle, I'd be a bit silly to by a 720p TV at this point in the game. Everything is moving up, might as well spend a bit extra and go full HD with 1080p.

Regardless of what type you get, read up and take into consideration the size of the screen vs the size of the room.  Too big + the inability to get far enough away can end up being a big headache.

Just bought a 56" 1080p LCD for £50.
The volume control was stuck on maximum, but at that price I couldn't turn it down.

(Boom tisch..)

Are you serious Mot3r? That is fantastic. And sound is the easiest thing in the world to fix, just use an external sound system and ignore the TV's built in audio.

Just tell that to George Lucas and his '04 Star Wars DVDs.  ^_~

Hey, I thought it was humorous.  I literally laughed out loud.  What?  Do you need a pat on the back every time you make a funny?  =P

I got your joke about the volume thing, funny stuff. Really. I guess I should take your last post to infer that you didn't actually get a cheap TV, and only said you did to make the volume joke... so disregard my last post about fixing the audio.

On a side note, my very first TV was quite a nice TV ($300 back in the nineties) that was given to me for free due to the mere fact that it didn't have sound... a problem that was easily fixed.

Yeah.  Start dropping a bunch of random "u"s into words like that, and our American brains just shut down.  I think it's a defense mechanism (or should I say defence mechanism?) you guys (er, blokes) have.

It's the British sense of humour man, they just don't get it.

No, I get British humor quite well (for an American anyway). I knew he was making a joke about the volume thing, but for some, appearently very ignorant and humorless reason, I thought that perhaps he really did get a cheap TV. In the states, deals like that are not unheard of, with the right connections.

Just watched the 1080p edition of the Jackel on my AQUOS, then compaired it to my DVD. It looks sharper, yes, but thats about it. I spent a few quid on my set-up and i'll be just as happy on my old setup.

I think it was made to look like normal (SD) pictures look blockey and dull on our new HD TVs.

Its a trap!!!!

(EDIT) We need to stick to buying DVDs and bypass Sonys Blu Ray, if the consumer really counts.

Wait, what?
