An update would be fantastic! I’m sure we’re all anxious to see meth Yoda in glorious 1080p but delays are completely understandable.

Currently, the plans and workflow only allow so many projects to be worked on. Ultimately, there will be at least 2 main versions of each film released.

1 Star Wars LPP with Eastman replacements, this is the first priority.

The rest of the projects will be in parallel.

2 Empire Strikes Back - Sanitized - [Eastman-Fuji hybrid]

3 Star Wars [Eastman]
4 Return of the Jedi [LPP Hybrid]
5 Empire Strikes Back [Fuji]
6 Return of the Jedi [Eastman]

And then the SE, and the Prequels.

So there’s a lot to look forward to next year and beyond.

… I think 35mm scans of AotC and RotS would be far easier to bring in line with the OT than the pristine Digital sources we have.

Now that Team Negative One is no more, I think we should, at least, consider the possibility of using a scan of this film’s 35mm print to the project.

I’m confused as to why the status of team negative 1’s existence has any bearing on this project. There are no existing TPM 35mm scans that anyone has done that I’m aware of. Are you suggesting those involved in the project obtain a print and make a scan? And if so, why does it matter if team negative 1 is around or not to do that?

I think maybe he was hoping on TN1 to get around to it, to benefit projects like this. And now he’s saying we should try to get this done without them if they aren’t going to.

Despite the status of the PT among fandom, the films will probably still fetch very high prices at auction. I think it would be pretty damn hard to justify spending thousands for a few seconds worth of footage needed to bring TPM and AoTC to their theatrical versions. That said, if we already knew someone with access to the prints, I would chip in for a scan.

My justification for the scan is the presence of actual film grain and film stock color attributes. Yes, scans would be awesome for the pieces of this edit that need them, but I’d really like scans for projects like emanswfans.

3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan

Sure. There’s that as well. But I really don’t know if it would be worth the tremendous amount of time and energy it takes to clean up a film, for these ones, just to get a bit of grain. Could do a grindhouse version, but these CGI-fests aren’t really the type of film that’s fun to watch that way. At least in my opinion.

As far as color goes, I was under the impression that the HDTV/DVD era ones were in great shape, aside from a couple of strangely pink shots in TPM.

An HD AoTC scan would be useful just to see what other changes can be found. I think there may be more than we know of. Conversely, I suspect that a scan of RoTS would be mostly a waste of resources that could be better spent. The theatrical version (which SD resolution telecines exist of) can be made by putting a single wipe from the blu-ray into the HDTV version. If one really wants to see grain on that film that was shot and distributed digitally, they can always add artificial grain.

The entire TPM DVD has a slight pink cast on the color. No clue on the HDTV, though.

EDIT: And I’d want a 35mm TPM because it’s the only PT film I’ll probably ever watch again due nostalgia, and that needs to be the theatrical version, which I would want to look it’s best (i.e. it’s best to have print grain IMO).

No amount of nostalgia can change the fact that Jar Jar Binks stinks up the whole thing. A good fanedit or nothing at all IMO.

But like I said, the nostalgia is for the theatrical version alone, so what purpose would there be in watching something that I will ultimately regret watching because I got so little of the nostalgia I watched it for? If not for nostalgic reasons, I wouldn’t consider watching those films again for the rest of my life. Ever.

Yep I corrected that. But I don’t really know for certain how it looked on 35mm as the only source for that is the Z-VCD bootleg.

That’s, just, like, your opinion, man.

To throw my bone into the mix for the prequels, I have bootleg DVDs, VHS and VCDs, and many of them (I have a weird habit of collecting them, much to the dismay of my bank account).
A few ‘big’ ones I have that may be of interest are a theatrical telecine of TPM (unfortunately with hard-coded Russian subs, and on a VHS tape) and I also have a bootleg DVD of the ROTS telecine mentioned earlier, which I believe is the only way to see the theatrical version of ROTS without a few thousand dollars to throw around.

The other main ones of note are the CTP AOTC and Z TPM VCD, but both of those are available already if you know where to look.

I don’t know why/if any of my bootlegs would help anyone, but the offer is there just in case.
Frankly I love the prequels and while I don’t have time to attempt large scale preservations, I’m more than willing to help others who may be interested.

He was making a reference to The Big Lebowski. I think it was meant lightheartedly 😃

Funnily enough, I’ve never seen it.

Hahahaha, yeah man, I’ve got better things to do than actually start shit over someone’s opinion, I just like The Big Lebowski 😉

The official Star Wars website has story galleries of all movies that have high quality pictures. I checked the Episode I gallery and to me it seems like the pictures have colors that could possibly match with the original theatrical prints. The pictures are definitely not from the Blu-Ray because the color and contrast are completely different and there’s even some visible film grain. Maybe you could use those pictures as a reference…

I hate to sound annoying and ungrateful, but may we pretty please have an update on this? I’m sitting on pins and needles waiting for this, which is currently one of my favorite yet-to-be-released projects.

And I understand life comes first and all that jazz, believe me. 😃

Checking back in - do you still plan on finishing this project? Or was sharing the scripts to build it on our own your preferred release method?

Yep I just need to build it. I’ve already done all the work really, with just a couple of technical issues to conquer.

Could we get a screenshot of the theatrical exclusive shots? I’m just curious how well they ended up resolving in 1080p.

Awesome, really looking forward to it. Maybe we can convince NJVC to whip up a Bluray release for this as well 😄
