Where were you in '77?
Thanks to everyone, and also a quick note to all that have been asking me “didn’t you leave the boards?”. Well, yes it was my intention to finish off a few posts and go, and I have ramped back my involvement considerably, but this project was just way to important not to try and help ensure the film was at least scanned at the best quality possible.
So I will be finishing off this project, but won’t be posting here much, and probably not in other threads at all.
One other Empire related project has also suddenly become maybe possible, which is also crazily rare, so I’m hoping it will also be able to be secured, more on that later.
I am so excited that THX is happening, as well as preserving the ultra rare Italian cut, it will also allow Harmy to do an extremely high quality despecialised edition. These forums and the people who get involved are amazing, you are all genuinely ensuring that films get preserved that would otherwise be lost forever.

Do you have plans for using surplus donations to fund other efforts related to the THX restoration? I’m sure those who are interested in donating but haven’t given yet (e.g. me) would be more encouraged to still contribute if we knew how the resources will be put to good use!

Don’t stop donations this early. It always helps to allow an extra 5% or 10% for contingencies. Don’t to play it too tight. Things always come up – crashed or early-defective drives and other hardware problems & wear for replacement, new hardware/software for special problems, and more. Did anyone factor in poita's (and team?) utilities (electricity, air-conditioning, supplies for his machines, coffee) also needed to accomplish this feat? 😃 It all costs to get it done.

If the owner of this post would get in contact with me, i can arrange to scan it free of charge, only shipping (and prepaid return shipping) will be required. I am indeed planning this funding very tightly and I could do with some extra for playing it safe. It’s the first time I deal with something similar and I didn’t want people to think I’m taking in more than I need to but yes, a little extra for unseen expenses could be useful, especially since shipping costs are only vaguely estimated and so far they have ended up being always more expensive than I thought

We had discussed this with Poita early on, but I’m addressing this again with him privately because I also would want Poita to have some of his expenses covered. His generosity is out of this world but he should definitely NOT be left only with expenses.

I guess I missed this. I’ve not been around much lately and even less on fanres. I donated to the 16mm scan and would be interested in helping here too. I have an upcoming surgery that takes precedence but sometime in May I could probably donate a little bit towards this.

The donation budget did not include the HDDs that I need to use to backup the files once I receive them, and doesn’t include HDDs to store the output of the cleanup work, which in total is more drives than the initial scan takes up, so more donations are always welcome.

BTW, Spaced Ranger, I looked at the frames of the kid being walked up the corridor, it looks like it is full colour in this print, the kid’s skintones are different to the doorframe tones.

I only realized yesterday the bill is folded into the shape of a dendrite, which is the small object characters in the film labor to earn credits to buy, only to flush it when they get home so they can go buy another one. 😃

Dendrites! I knew those hexagonal cubes must have a name, but I always thought “dendrites” were those red or blue capsules everyone takes.

Yeah, I noticed that, it is a fantastic card, with lots of ‘easter eggs’.
I might be wrong Mr Ranger, I’ll post an image tonight, but it looks to me like actual skintones on the arm, and I think I have the correct sequence.
The channel registration is terrible on the print, like a lot of IBs, we should be able to minimise it, but probably not eliminate it entirely, and of course, it is a grain-fest coming from Techniscope. I haven’t had a close look, but it appears to be the same cut as the US sequence in the opening minutes, and not the weird ‘end at the start’ version, but I don’t currently have audio, so don’t know if the narrative is there.
