I don’t Luke about this issue either way, but I ALLOL’d at “that’s what they’ve been called by everyone.”

Past tense, “been”. That’s pretty much what anybody called them until this mess started.

…Why does everybody laugh at me?

I’ll never call it “Episode VII”

People IRL around me call it “Episode VII”, or “The new Star Wars”, even “Star Wars VII”, but no one uses “Le réveil de la Force” (“The Force awakens”). Maybe we got used of the number. R1 will probably be called “the new Star Wars which is not Star Wars VIII/Episode VIII” or “Star Wars III.5”.

The movies are Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. That’s what they’ve been called by everyone, so that’s what they will be called.

The original copyrights I believe are register under SW, TESB, and ROTJ as well, making those the official titles

I won’t discuss it for SW, because this is its original title, under which it was first registered. But for the others, what is the copyright ? TESB and ROTJ were marketed as “SW : TESB” and “SW : ROTJ” but the episode number was originally in the crawl.

Don’t know if this is entirely reliable, but here is imdb card : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dt#akas

(original title) Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
(alternative title) Star Wars: The Force Awakens

TN1 has given us an interesting insight into this. The 1981 craw that they included with their SSE release has the tile of the film in 1981 for UK release as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

It still does not answer my question: these are posters, i.e. the way the movies are marketed.

The official name is Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Does this answer your question?

Sources ? It seems no one can provide me the right answer with facts, no just guess.

Our national film registry but if the copyright site is right, then disregard. It says the original name is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as is the official name in my country. But at least it doesn’t have the episode in our title.

Lol, why so much bickering over the official title. I interchangeably call it “TFA”, “The Force Awakens”, “Episode VII”, or “the new Star Wars” all the time.

That said I’m sure Episode VII is part of the official title, but because Disney is at least trying to appear somewhat loyal to the theatrical OT, they decided to market it like such. This isn’t as bjg of a deal as calling “Star Wars” “A New Hope”.

Does it matter what exactly the title is? According to some of the international Blu-Ray releases, this movie actually has no title:

Actually this cover contains quite a spoiler, if you look to what character the red light sabre points.

I think that the picture is only a template, each country should print on it it’s own title. At least I hope so 😃

It says Episode VII in the title crawl (trust me, it’s the first thing I looked for) and it says VII here: http://www.starwars.com/films

No one has said otherwise.

People are debating if the Episode number is part of the official title or not…

Author

This is the silliest debate I’ve ever read.

STAR WARS
Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

It’s right there in the movie.

“Ghostbusters” is the name of the original movie, but the title card on screen says:

GHOST
BUSTERS

Despite what my friend will insist, the official title is one word, no matter how many it says in the actual movie.

On another hand, “Raiders Of The Lost Ark” has always been the official legal title and what was on screen, no matter how many packaging changes we get, that’s the name of the movie.

That’s too bad; I would love to see a debate between TV’s Frink and HansiG.
