Bad news: The PCM audio is giving me trouble so I am going to exclude it for now, but it will be available as a separate download.

As someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about… what is the advantage of PCM audio?

Also, can’t wait to download!

I did a quick preview of it, at least viewing the first minute or so then at the credits. From those quick glances & listening the audio sounds good on the computer. The file size I have is 30.5 GB.

Just watched it and wow, that was amazing. It made TFA not into a masterpiece, but a really enjoyable movie! Thank you all so much for making this happen.

There are some (tiny) things that could be improved in a possible future version, but overall it’s really seamless. I don’t think I’d have noticed any edits if I hadn’t known about them. Honestly, I’m not even sure if I catched all.

So once again: Thank you very much.

“The edit. You’ve seen it.”

I am glad that those who have viewed this so far find no obvious, glaring problems. I’m sure the things you’d point out are things I’m aware of, too. It will never be perfect, but I am very, very pleased with how dramatically better you all have helped this V2 to become.

By the way, PCM is uncompressed audio. The audio track for that one was nearly 5GB!

The 720p encode failed, as I found when I returned home just now. It quit about a third of the way into the movie. I should have a less than 1GB version appearing in the same download location this evening, and hopefully a successful 720p encode of about 8GB ready to go sometime early tomorrow. But, as always, we’ll see.

On the way opposite end of the picture and sound scale, the 800MB tiny version is now available as well. The 8GB 720p version is top priority right now, and hopefully will be ready early tomorrow.

Just jumped around to look at most of our changes, wanted to make a few notes.

Besides a thing or two that I noticed, this edit looks super professional. FX, sound, quality, everything. It’s very impressive.

Now, the most glaring thing I noticed, and it probably was mentioned already, but the second Snoke scene after Kylo Ren interrogates Rey, it does jump back and forth between Kylo with and without his helmet. It’s not immediately noticeable, though, as it is a wide shot and a back of head shot(s). It was the major continuity error I noticed and it definitely needs to be addressed in a future edit (either Restructured or something else).

Another one that I think needs to be dealt with is the first R2 scene. You can’t hear 3PO walking away, so one moment he is there and the next moment he is gone.

I also can’t remember if a sunset color grading was supposed to be added at all for the Battle of Takodana, or that was left off the table for this edit, but I didn’t really notice a difference from the theatrical.

Also, the deleted scene with Leia. It looks really good, but I felt the shots of her after she sits down look a bit too yellow. Her face just looks a tad more yellow than any of the other resistance shots of her though. Maybe it is just me.

I don’t if what Ridley did to the slow mo shots during the Hosnian destruction was also done to that shot of Kylo Ren right before it cuts to Starkiller stuff, but if wasn’t I think it could be. It’s not bad, it kind of has a cool effect, but just wanted to see how others felt about it. If no one says anything then I wouldn’t worry about it.

Overall, I think everything looks fantastic. Job well done.

Hal believed it was no longer valuable to include it, that the visuals were all we needed. 😉

I also can’t remember if a sunset color grading was supposed to be added at all for the Battle of Takodana, or that was left off the table for this edit, but I didn’t really notice a difference from the theatrical.

The decision was made not to include it because it was one more step of encoding and slightly degraded the image quality.

Also, the deleted scene with Leia. It looks really good, but I felt the shots of her after she sits down look a bit too yellow. Her face just looks a tad more yellow than any of the other resistance shots of her though. Maybe it is just me.

Yeah, I was hoping to get another chance at color correcting this scene, it just didn’t happen in time for the release.

It’s not bad, it kind of has a cool effect, but just wanted to see how others felt about it. If no one says anything then I wouldn’t worry about it.

There are a few slowed shots such as that one which didn’t get the treatment, I don’t think. Leia’s final reaction in that scene was slowed, a handful of shots in the destruction of the Starkiller sequence were slowed, etc.

Overall, I think everything looks fantastic. Job well done.

Thanks!

I just got this downloaded, and one thing I noticed was that the Starkiller smoke removal fix is a previous version. I don’t know if that was intentional, since there’s some slight image registration problems with the updated version, but I’m honestly relieved that my updated version didn’t make it in. Now I can fix that shot more better, or Sir Ridley can do it even more better.

Despite the things which have yet to be done, I’m very pleased with this release. I think that almost all of the goals of this edit have been achieved, and it only needs a few more simple things for perfection. 😃

I don’t recall there being multiple versions of that shot. Not saying there weren’t! I can’t imagine it looking better.

The continuity issue during the second Snoke scene is indeed the highlighted remaining problem with the project, to be sure.

Yeah, I tried to add 3PO servo sounds to the first scene with R2, but I couldn’t seem to get it right, and I figure the audience is not focusing on him in that moment anyway.

Sunset regrade: My method for doing what I wanted to was to overlay footage from NeverarGreat and reduce transparency, to apply the effect only in part. This proved impossible, as the output had a great deal of noise. Since it was only a change I was going to make ‘because it was there’ and is not really relevant to the project’s goal, I left it out without another thought.

I see what you mean about the Leia deleted scene’s colors, though it doesn’t stand out to me. Though, those kinds of things generally don’t.

I had forgotten that there were some additional shots that were slowed slightly. I’d never had noticed, either.

Thanks for the feedback! I probably won’t do an updated version without a “big deal” coming along. But who knows? Maybe we’ll get one in a week or so. I’m thrilled with how V2 turned out, after I frankly regretted doing V1. You are all amazing.

The updated version of the smoke cleanup is among my Mega links. SirRidley had also previewed a version of that shot on YouTube which looked even better than that (at least in low-res), I don’t know if that ever got rendered.

You regretted V1? As in the quality wasn’t all you had hoped for, or you had second thoughts on the concept?

I hope that there is a V3 at some point, if only to give it that extra shine that it could have had with only a week or two more work.

I’d love to see a v3 as well. I think waiting until the Last Jedi is released will give us enough information to be ready to perfect the edit with a possible v3.

Fair enough, you guys. 😃

What I mean is that after V1, I still didn’t feel like it was viable as a replacement for the original. It would’ve been an easy restructure at the script level or even reshoot level, but not fan edit level. You have proven me wrong.

I just watched the edit myself this evening with the wife. (I had to watch the crap quality version but that’s all right.) It really is amazing how the film works with what we’ve done to it. It makes the original feel off.

Really? You regretted it? Why is that?

Yeah, I honestly think that Snoke scene is really the only important thing that could be added to Restructured. Nothing else really serves that purpose that hasn’t already been done.

Yeah, this whole process has been really fun. HOPEFULLY we won’t have to do this amount of work again for The Last Jedi, but the work can continue in Ridley and Nev’s (can I call you Nev?) own edits. And after TLJ comes out, I’m sure it will help them make decisions about what other changes to make to TFA.

Good point, Rush! TLJ might bring to light other changes that could be made for a V3.

Seems like there will either be a V3 (if TLJ prompts any reconsiderations) or V2.1 (if only minor tweaks are called for). I’ll put off upgrading to High Sierra, as after that point I’ll no longer be able to work with all the things I’ve done using Final Cut Pro 7. With my life preparing to change soon, if V2.1 is the path to head down, I’ll want to expedite that. We’ll know for sure inside of a week, I guess.

NeverarGreat, if you wouldn’t mind, please send that Starkiller shot I apparently missed, and the Leia deleted scene recolored whenever you can.

I’m still waiting on the files for the Leia scene, and I’d like to give the Starkiller shot another go before sending it out, but that shouldn’t take too long.

BTW, You might consider updating this thread title to indicate that Restructured V2 (or the Starkiller edit as I obstinately call it) has been released. 😉

I definitely think that I am more desiring of a v2.1. Fixing the snoke scene is really all that needs to be done. As RogueLeader said, after the Last Jedi, if people want to improve it further than they could use 2.1 as a base. But after doing a few quick tweaks, I think you should be good to upgrade from Final Cut 😃

This was probably not meant to be removed in this edit but after Finn’s “they’ve found us”, Han and Finn are with Maz in the basement and she goes “those beasts, they’re here” as in they didn’t inform her? Just “those beasts…” would’ve been enough. Super nitpicky, I know. I can live with it though. The Rathtars are still my biggest gripe. Other than that… this movie feels like a masterpiece now.

It’s more a “ok, now they are here” statement than a surprise ('cause the fact they are rushing to get the saber in the basement acknowledges they are aware of the upcoming attack, something that was totally unclear in the theatrical cut).

Author

If someone makes a v2.1 checklist I’ll get working on what’s needed. 😉

Here’s a start:
• New deleted scene grade
• New “no smoke” shot
• More updated slomo shots
• Kylo helmet fix
• 3PO foley

I interpret it as “they’re here (on the ground)” as opposed to just floating in the sky as they saw earlier. Maybe?

Here’s what I’m working from at this point regarding a V2.1. (Of course for now I’m trying to get V2 distributed!)

Hyperspace ambience post-Jakku shouldn’t include cockpit whine since that’s not the part of the ship they’re on.

(Kylo Ren’s helmet appearing and vanishing during second Snoke scene.) If one of you pull this one off, I’d… Well, at this point I’d probably be surprised at how unsurprised I’d be.

3PO walking away sound effects - If anyone has some sound effects that would work that would be a big help. None I could find online didn’t seem hokey.

Recolored Leia deleted scene

(Make deleted scene audio just a little bit louder)

Ridley - match up each shot with the theatrical, retiming any that are necessary, from immediately after Han is shanked to Leia’s Force reaction.

Updated version of Starkiller shot as X-wings arrive - NeverarGreat

Maybe dub tech guy to tell Hux “weapon reprimed in 30 seconds” or “weapon fully recharged.” Can’t be myself; needs to sound vaguely European.

An english guy around here with an european english accent and who might have the tech to record a new line… hum… that’s pretty easy to find 😃

(more “Weapon reset in 30 seconds” to imply there is some kind of calculations to adjust before firing ?)

(edit: oh thanks I didn’t know “reprimed” was more or less a synonym of “reset” ! That’s why I like american forums !)

Yourself? It’s early in the morning and I didn’t get much sleep. You’re gonna have to pretty much spell it out for me while I brew some coffee.

And I’m in favor of giving V2.1 the fast track so I can put it to rest well ahead of immanent major things I’m gonna need to be focused on. There’s only a small amount for us to do. Then… it’ll be a 30GB gem that’ll hold value for a long time. Thanks in advance.
