I understand. But I don’t see how removing “those beasts” would affect anything (unless you’re removing both lines). I get how removing the latter line would change it, though I’m not sure removing either is necessary with the current lone star destroyer solution, as that doesn’t necessarily imply an impending attack.

I agree that “They’re here.” doesn’t make any sense if we see TIEs or Kylo’s shuttle.
But if it’s just the Stardestroyer then it fits perfectly as was only informed that the FO has arrived in orbit and now notices that they are in fact “here”.

I also think that “Those beasts.” makes perfect sense as a reaction to the FO bombarding the castle unprovoked.

I don’t think it matters whether those lines are in the edit or not. I don’t feel like it changes anything. Though my opinion is to leave it with just the “they’re here” line. Those beasts is just kinda redundant.

Also I don’t get the impression that her saying “they’re here” means that she wasn’t aware of the attack, it comes off more like “we’re running out of time”

I would like to see what can be done with the ending of the movie to add more weight to the loss of the republic. Even in the theatrical cut there is almost no reaction from anyone.

Well, technically, since the approaching TIEs were removed there is no certain attack, and even if they suspect an attack might be coming they have no idea when it’s happening or if they will be attacking the castle itself. So to me, “they’re here” is not about total surprise, but a sort of disbelief and shock that they are now actually HERE, at her home, attacking directly.

It could be removed, that’s something to try, but I feel like it works like it is.

Now that many people have mentioned the “Apocalypse Now” shot, it got me wondering… what was the purpose of it in the first place? Simply homage? The TIEs have a sunset behind them and it is (or seemed like) the middle of the day on Takodana. Oh well…

It looks cool. But to be fair it’s more a Michael Bay shot than a “Apocalypse now” shot. Which is still a compliment (Bay’s movies are awful but they are full of great shots and beautiful pictural compositions).

Maybe a different angle would work better? I think having the ship pointed directly at the planet is more intimidating… possibly breaking through the clouds with TIEs coming towards them.

I like the lone Star Destroyer. It’s a pretty threatening shot.

The color grading looks good.

Yep but I like the idea of a huge destroyer in the sky. It reminds me of the best shots of Rogue One.

What if the entire battle was graded to take place near sunset? I did a quick adjustment to see what that might look like:

The time of day seems to change on a whim on Takodana. It’s late afternoon when Rey steps out of the Falcon:

…then it’s mid-day when she runs away from the castle:

…then the apocalypse TIEs happen at sunset, then it’s mid-day again through the attack, then it’s nearly sunset when Leia arrives:

I have two possible answers to this conundrum:

• Takodana has seriously screwed up rotation.
• Someone’s doing the time warp again.

The effect you did is very convincing and well done but I quite prefer the other angle.

I agree. At no other point in the series are ships that are that close to planets at a perpendicular angle to the planet’s surface. This kind of establishes the ships, while that close, are affected by the planet’s gravity in such a way that they have to remain parallel.
