You must be really out of the loop, because it’s not being released to the public. If it was Mike would face legal action from Disney. Our best hope it that Disney adopts it for an official re-release of Star Wars.
I have some hope for that. Given that Disney takes no action against Harmy, Adywan, or 1negative_team, I find it curious that they would make such threats against Mike. Obviously, Mike’s work is on a much grander scale than any of those I just mentioned, but perhaps they have a desire to use it for their own re-release.
Yes, the news that Mike has shared recently is encouraging. As for the legal action, Disney has been tolerant thus far. And though Harmy’s work is amazing, it’s still a patchwork of various sources. Legacy is a pristine 4K scan/restoration taken directly from multiple 35mm copies of the original 1977 Star Wars. It is so flawless that its release would render any attempt by Disney to re-release the original film nearly moot. That’s why I think that Mike has been warned about the potential consequences of a release. On the flip side, Mike has effectively already done all their restoration work for them, so I’m optimistic that they will adopt Legacy, and hopefully offer Mike some well-deserved compensation for all his hard work.
