Star Wars theatrical versions not coming in 2015 — Page 11

The Library of Congress made a scan of one of its copies of Star Wars at Disney’s request a couple months ago. I hadn’t heard about it either until the man in the forum linked in my comments (who I believe is trustworthy) made that statement. It isn’t the 4K restoration itself, but it would - from what I understand - be used as a comparison in any type of restoration of the OOT.

EDIT: I did actually personally contact the Library of Congress regarding the status of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi and they did respond saying that a scan of Star Wars has been made. For what reason, they didn’t say, but I do believe the posts in the Steve Hoffman forums that it was made at Disney’s request

Ahh gotcha. And my apologies. I just realized that this was actually the thread that had mentioned the Library of Congress scan. I was simultaneously following another SW thread on another site and thought it was mentioned there and not here hence why I asked. My bad.

Someone posted an article from a guy who saw the scan. It is apparently not done in 4K, but rather 2K. This would be enough for a reference copy or Blu Ray release, but not a true restoration.

That is what I would expect them to use it for, a reference copy. It is also possible that it could be used as a satisfying blu ray release, depending on the quality of the print.

If they just have a theatrical print, it’s not really good enough for a blu-ray (and not really good enough for the type of article that guy was writing.)

Well, I don’t know what article some of you are talking about. I read on the Steve Hoffman forums from the man that worked for ILM that Disney requested a scan of one of the Library of Congress’s prints of Star Wars. He seems to think that it would most likely be used as some kind of reference when restoring the OOT. Given the man’s history with Lucasfilm and the fact that he knows the guy who made the scan at the Library, I think he is trustworthy.

Who would have ultimately paid for the scan and who could have requested it? It’s assumed that Disney made the request. Can this also be that they would not have done so for somebody (like you or me) who doesn’t own the copyright to the film?

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

Since Disney owns the films I think they can request a scan whenever they want. I believe the user who posted the information when he said that Disney requested the scan to be done, as he has shown himself to be honest and trustworthy when it comes to things like this over the years. I’m not sure how exactly the Library works, but I guarantee that they would not make a scan of a film simply at the request of someone interested in viewing it. Disney has a lot of power and influence and surely can get whatever they want.

My apologies if this is perhaps old news but whats this story Im hearing of the print of SW being held by the Library of Congress being scanned in 4K?? Is this the 4K restoration thats been long discussed or something else??

They actually got a print in the end!?

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I believe they’re just missing Empire, which was added to the registry after 1997. I’m also not sure if Jedi has been selected at all.

The Library itself has prints of all three. Only the original film has been scanned digitally. I emailed them and they responded saying that the National Film Registry specifically has not received new prints of Empire or Star Wars, but copyright deposits (which he said are considered ‘archival masters’) of all three unaltered films are held by the Library of Congress. Researchers can make appointments to watch Star Wars (1977) if they need to.

We’ve mentioned the scans at the Library of Congress before, from a few years ago,
only Return of the Jedi is in decent shape, the other two are faded:

Right. Which is interesting, because the person who recently reviewed the copy of SW77 described nothing like the red fade described in those links. He made it sound like perhaps there was a loss of vibrancy, but never mentioned anything being red or pink, let alone unwatchably so. So perhaps this is not the same copy?

They have two prints of Star Wars, I don’t know about Empire though. Either way, Lucasfilm will likely use the scan of Star Wars as a reference.

It’s true what they say, you can’t escape your history in porn, no matter how legit you go afterwards.

Someone with more knowledge on the subject than me should comment, but I was browsing the official website and I think there is some kind of restored frame from Star Wars on an article. Here’s the link

It definitely isn’t from GOUT, I checked, and I know it isn’t the Special Edition; the colors are very strange though and it’s either zoomed in or cropped. It’s in an article about trailers, but it is too clean to be from a trailer especially when compared to other shots.

They probably still have the negatives (unaltered) in the vault at Skywalker Ranch.

The top frame of the Millenium Falcon, if that is the frame you’re referring to, looks to be from the teaser trailer, not the TV spot the article is highlighting. The frame of Luke on the homestead looks new.

I was referring to the Luke one. The colors are really weird and it’s either zoomed in or cropped. It isn’t the Special Edition though and it isn’t from a trailer

If nothing else, there was an IB Tech of SW77 there. But I don’t know if that belonged to LucasFilm or George himself.

Lucasfilm under George’s leadership saved everything. I’m sure there is more than enough material in the vault.
