Fixing Things Ourselves

With the recent and upsetting news that Lucasfilm will NEVER release the Original Unaltered Trilogy in ANAMORPHIC Widescreen... I was wondering, when the non-anamorphic dvd's are released, if us, the fans, can just make them anamorphic ourselves. I have no clue how to do such editing and don't know how hard that would be. But I have seen various laserdisc editions, and some have been able to turn a laserdisc transfer into an anamorphic one. At least that way it can be played on a widescreen tv. Will anyone do this, but not change ANYTHING else to the new dvd, except make it anamorphic?

If the copyright issue is a problem to people, maybe somehow you can make it so the only way anyone can get these "fan-made anamorphic versions" is proof that you purchased the new dvd's.

This is all just a thought. I just want to have these in anamporphic. And I don't care how it happens.

Thank you for the links, but those threads still don't announce wether or not anyone will actually pursue making them anamorphic when they come out. Is anyone thinking of attempting to?

If you've got a widescreen crt then it would improve the picture (less obvious scan lines) But if you've gotten yourself a digital display eg TFT or plasma then you wouldn't gain anything.

Does anyone know where to buy PAL discs if you are state-side?

Online retailers would be your best bet. Try www.amazon.co.uk for starters.

EDIT: I can't spell

Yeah, I probably will, and I'm sure many others will convert their copies too.

But note: converting a retail DVD from letterboxed to anamorphic does not come under the umbrella of "preservation" or "fan editing". Although Jay, Zion and I are still discussing changes to the site rules, it is likely that discussions about how to customize your own DVDs will be allowed, but discussions about distribution (torrents, etc.) of such DVDs won't be.

Moth3r: Would adding a mono mix to the OOT DVD be considered preservation? Since we aren't likely to get the mono mix in this release, and it would be nice to have.

I like this approach. I even support making the optional audio tracks available with instructions on how to mux them into your official DVD. It would be nice if the PCM audio, the mono mix, the music-only mix and any LD commentaries were preserved and made available, synched to the length of the official disc, and a thread with how to DIY could tell everybody what they can do if they are so inclined.

If, as expected, the original mono soundmix does not appear on the official discs, then I consider it fair game for preservation.

In fact, if we're lucky, a fully cleaned up and restored track will be made available soon after the September release of the original trilogy.

This will be released as an audio file with instructions to patch your own disc, similar to marioxb's "Backstroke of the West kit".

Sweet! Obviously we're in a dubious position with distributing alterations to something officially available, as opposed to preservation of an out-of-print edition. (Particularly when so many people have said they're not buying it, distribution would surely fall under the heading of piracy.) I'm a complete novice at dvd authoring, I'd have to obtain a bunch of programs first to be able to do any of it, but if the various audio tracks were made available and we could all learn how to create our own ideal versions, that would be really great.

Of course, I'd still love a version that combined '04 and '06 dvd footage classic edition style, except better. That's one project I'd just as soon not tackle myself. lol

I can't see the '04/'06 thing working too well - it would have the same problems as Classic Edition. The patch-kit idea is a good one for alternate soundtracks/fanamorphizing. The good news is, once you've forked out for the DVDs, you can probably do the rest with freeware.

According to George Lucas, it will be out of print again in 2007 .

A new release of Star Wars is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.
