Universal just announced American Graffiti for a blu-ray release in May. The words SPECIAL EDITION are in big bold letters on the temp art and there's going to be a picture-in-picture commentary by Lucas, so that leaves little doubt as to which version of the movie will be included and which ones won't.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not surprised in the least. Since WB already put out the 2004-only blu-ray of THX-1138 and the "complete saga" of Star Wars is hitting in September from Lucas and Fox, Universal would make them look pretty awkward if they'd gone all Close Encounters with this release.

Who knows, maybe in 2013 there will be yet another domino effect and we'll get the original versions of THX, Graffiti and the OT (hey, one can dream).

Maybe special edition refers to the Blu Ray release, not the film; as in, a Special Blu Ray Edition. "Special Edition" was and is a standard term for 2-disk(+) DVD editions. "Deluxe Edition" "Collectors Edition" "Anniversary Edition" and "[Novelty Name] Edition" were also often used, but Special Edition is the most common. Here's hoping it's more a case of that.

In what year did Lucas stop calling them the special edition.  The blu rays are being advertised as the original trilogy, which i think is false advertising by removing the special edition from it.

Shouldn't it be special edition 2.0 or 2.1 if you consider the remixed audio on star wars ?

I think it was in 2000:

Oh, fuck that set.  I was so excited, because I could own the original versions in WIDESCREEN for the first time!

Then I bought it, put Star Wars in ... and watched in horror at the R2-in-the-valley scene, which was clearly the same as the special edition.

I only ended up watching those tapes in the future when I finally wore out my "Faces" set, and couldn't find replacements.

Further evidence of Lucas' plan to erase the original theatrical versions from LFL, film history and memory.

He kinda fucked up including the crummy laserdisc transfers as bonuses in the '06 dvds.

He can try to erase the originals from history, but it's ridiculously futile, especially in the internet age.

I think he actually said that he thinks one day all the VHS' will wear out and the only versions of the movie left will be the special editions.

Right.

Hah, I remember those stupid days, when LFL was somehow hyping VHS TAPES with a straight face. Why don't you have an ad campaign for parachute pants while you're at it.

Anyway, more fantasy football.   Could someone move this to "How would you redo the prequels" in scriptwriting? Apologies! Computer is on the fritz.

Between '77 and '83 I was collecting bits from various sources. My Granfather had a fairly large personal library in his basement. I didn't have much time or patience for actually reading the books, so I developed a method of paging through and gleaning some essential points. Books on history, archeaology, philosophy, comparative religion, mythology. There were books on oriental philosophy. Buddism, Tao (Dao), Confucius. 'A Study Of History' had pride of place on the shelves, so I borrowed a volume at a time and read most of the work (paged through the rest.)

Also during this period, I was looking into my own mongrel background. I'm part Slavic, part German, part British, and part Altaic (Mongol.) I tended to approach history from the back and forth movements of these peoples. It's interesting to me that the Hungarians and Finns could speak an essentially Mongolian language so deep within Europe. In school, I was taught the more recent history of the peoples of a midwestern state as well.

When ESB was released, I was blown away. I also became interested in the aspects in which it didn't meet my expectations. On the brief occasions when I considered SW, I began to look even more for historical, cinematic and philosophical relationships. I also began wishing that Ben could have been the same age as Luke's parents, so that Yoda could take his place and the basic character relationships of my backstory could be maintained. Around this time, someone told me that there were SW fans who thought Ben's name OB1 was a clone designation. I had another theory about that and thought it must be the wildest speculation. I suppose that I should have paid closer attention. It's a terrific story, Jedi clones going insane from accelerated growth.

When ROTJ was released, again, I was blown away. Vader saving his son was so powerful. I much enjoyed the first two times I saw it. By the third viewing, critical analysis set in. I decided upon theoject. I saw very moving 'what if/if only' aspects to the OT and took it up as a pleasant little diversion.

I needed a clearer understanding of the backstory, my best guess as to where GL was taking it, and to fill in some gaps to the best of my knowledge. Up to ROTJ release, I had Jedi as UN/LON style peacekeepers, Force Women as diplomats/peacemakers (because we all know that every SWU woman is either a farmer's wife or a diplomat/special operative;) both of Lukes parents were Force wielders (because Luke could deflect lasers, blindfolded, after 20 minutes of instruction), a love triangle among 20 year olds, and Ben/Yoda overseeing the crew. I had two or more worlds creating clone armies and going to war with each other and other systems- for some reason. I even tried to imagine a hero ship to carry our heros (shiney new- but nothing like the Naboo transports) I didn't have anything like a story for any of this- and didn't really need any.

Apologies! This was supposed to go into into the "How would you redo the Prequels" thread in scriptwriting. If someone could move it there I'd be very grateful! My PC is acting strange. Won't even write properly

Sorry, individual posts can't be moved, only complete threads. If you copy/paste your text into a new post in the correct thread I'll delete this one.

Well i see last weekend the SW SE's were aired on SpikeTV for the billionth time.  Nothing like ol' georgy boy trying to shove those garbage editions down people's throats before the bluray releases thus trying to get people to forget about  the OOTs'.

As for LFL's future rereleases, what's their pitch going to be now?

LFL: "From the creative mind of george lucas,  its the original SW trilogy!  Sit back and enjoy these classics movies with enhanced effects, now with 40% more womp-rats!"

"There's no cluster of midiclorians that controls my destiny!" -Han Solo, from a future revision of ANH

That's not usual. This time he didn't mentioned "i want the starwars saga on bluray and it would be nice if it had the original trilogy too because of the original trilogy fans that dont belive it will be fixd".

Right.

Exactly why I've never changed my signature.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I'm glad you haven't changed it. I had never read it before coming here. Before that I was foolishly hopeful that eventually there would be a theatrical release considering it has become a trend among other new blurays. Now it's painfully clear that it will never happen.

And for people who think it's natural for artists to add to and change their masterpiece, remember that Leonardo da Vinci didn't go back and add a bigger smile to the Mona Lisa. (I just got done reading the comments on the SW bluray release on starwars.com) Some people love the additions and that's great, but let's have the original as well please.

LFL cannot do that simple act, having the originals on Blu-ray. It's sad that we will never see the OOT in theaters again outside of rebel screenings. When the OT hits 3-d in 2015 it's undeniably going to have more changes in it than the BD will have in six months. It makes sense that they moved up the release date a week, because it probably took them half an hour to make the BD transfer, and just pissing away the remaining months. Lets we at least get the GOUT on Blu-ray by 2013, and let's hope it's at least anamorphic, even though it will look like shit (that's like saying water is wet).

Speaking of the Mona Lisa, that's eventually going to rot away in a few years, because the material it's painted on was substandard. I guess GL put the OT on bad film stock so it would rot faster.

Isn't it ironic that LFL has the OOT 20 years outdated and the SE 10 years, in terms of video standards? How did they go from the finest to the worst of the worst?

Author

It's very very disappointing to see an establishment like LFL turn on its early fans (who made them successful) and become a despised company.

But I still admire and love the original artists, model makers, technicians, etc. who made those early movies possible.

Too bad the company is now an echo chamber for GL's delusions; it's basically a slave plantation now, where you obey the master. I wonder of the people who actually made the OT are still working for LFL (Ben Burtt, for one, but who else?).
