We used to be more hostile to piracy around here. Why do I think if this was some newbie coming in here saying these things, he'd be chum to a bunch of long-time sharks?

As soon as the Blu-Ray comes out, I'm buying it - sight unseen*.

George Lucas is awesome. He can do no wrong. IMO**.

Okay, hopefully that'll take the heat off of ESF.

* Since I can't watch the disc inside the case before I buy it, technically this is accurate.

Besides the point. Why did SW have to shackled to a person like George Lucas, who treats his films like ongoing projects, commting the cinematic equivalent of self-destruction?

generalfrevious, what is besides the point?  Not sure I understood you there.

what I meant is all this piracy banter

Also, why did SW deserve to be ruined by itsit's own creator?

My hope is that when the blu-rays are finally released without the OOT (which they probably will be), a few years down the road, when Lucas is ready to milk the blu-ray cow again, they'll be released with the OOT as a bonus. That's the only way I see it happening.

Author
Time

And hopefully, when that happens, they'll either be individual releases or a trilogy box, so we won't have to buy the prequels to get the OOT.

To be honest, I would think that hopefully some version of the OOT would be included in a Lucasfilm "complete" set. Even if it is just a anamorphic, HD version of the GOUT. Oh boy. Wouldn't that be just wonderful. "Then you've got a virus again and..."

A six movie set released by Fox, it's gonna be expensive. I wonder how many people would consider the lack of OOT a dealbreaker. I wonder if LFL is doing that market research right now.

You know, I'd be happy with a fixed SE along the lines of Revisited (sans the prequel music, that's still the only change I dislike... why don't I have the purist version again?) The colors of the 2004 DVD are truly what make me pine for the OUT. Actually, that's kind of a lie, I do think it's important for cultural and historical reasons. But other than that, I would buy an OT set if it was the SE color-corrected. Otherwise, no sell and I'll wait for some OUT goodness.

My major dealbreaker, besides that, would be having to buy the PT. I just won't do that.

DEALBREAKER!!!

(Granted, I don't have a Blu-ray player in the first place, so it's rather moot at the moment... but still... DEALBREAKER!!!)

Who knows, they might release them individually as well.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Alright, I'm just about done playing mod or the morality police (or the regular police, for that matter).  I'm just disappointed that so few people here appear to be concerned about piracy.  I think vfp is right - if ESF's exact words were spoken by some newbie, we'd all be tearing him to shreds.  But because ESF is known and liked (by myself as well, btw), we give him a pass and sweep what he said under the rug?

Sorry, but piracy is never besides the point.

Ok, I'm done.  Back to speculation on the blu...

When I first discovered fan-edits, I gave Wal-Mart $15 of my hard earned cash to buy a copy of that piece of crap AOTC so that my copy of Attack of the Phantom would be 'legal.'

Piracy is bad.

They already have the results of that "market research" - the sales numbers when they released the GOUT.  Gotta wonder what the actual numbers were compared to the '04 box set.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

That's sort of like asking if anyone wants a cookie?  Sitting on the bag of cookies... and then counting the people that still eat one.  That's BS market research and they know it.

If the OT extras are considerable, I might consider buying the set. By considerable, I mean tons of deleted scenes or alternate takes that have never been seen before.

That's an area where I take a fairly strong stance.

There's a girl here at work who joined Netflix specifically so she could create a giant library for herself. Always with the meant as silly disclaimer - "you know me, I'm just a little pirate". No matter how many times I told her I didn't want to help her insure that my DVDs will always cost over twenty dollars to cover all the profits lost to piracy, she still tried to bring one by occasionally.

Every time we'd be in a conversation about films and I'd mention something I had and watched regularly or that I'm particularly fond of, she'd ask to borrow it. My answer was the same every time - "no, I don't want it bootlegged and passed on to other pirates & bootleggers" - which I know her & her husband do.

Through those very same connections, she was able to get a copy of The Dark Knight before its theatrical release. It was one of those copies the studios release for reviewers, with the disclaimer branding at the bottom of the screen. She was sure I'd watch that one because I'm a Batman nerd, so she made me a copy and left it on my desk. It sat there until she came and got it about a week later. I only know it was a stolen preview copy because a few other guys watched the copies she made for them.

Seems like she's finally gotten the message. These days she doesn't push the bootlegs on me, nor does she ask to borrow my DVDs.

I'm no saint by any stretch**, but I can't contribute to the very thing that makes the costs so high. I can't even begin to imagine the thousands of dollars she's stolen for herself, as well as passed on to others in her network of bootleggers.

.

** My full-film audio rips are most likely a form of copyright infringement, but they stay only with me, and they're all DVDs I purchased legally. In fact, I purchased Kingdom of the Crystal Skull twice (Blu-ray & DVD) just so I'd have one to rip the audio from. Along those same lines, I could have easily gotten a full copy of the Star Wars NPR version for free from a few sites, but I bought it from the manufacturer.

Has the state-of-the art in seamless branching gotten any farther along these days? Normally I would have said it was impossible to have both versions on one disc (assuming they get the colors right), but the blu of Close Encounters has 3 versions with a LOT of big and small differences spread across the three different cuts, and that came out 3 years ago.

I'm confused why we are talking about piracy.  Are the blue ray disks out yet?  I think we still have to wait, right?

You know. The sad fact of the matter is that fan edits are a form of piracy. There are no if ands or buts about it. It's hard to listen to people judge others for copying DVDs and gloating about downloading fan-edits at the same time.  If studios wanted fan edits to be available they would issue contracts to fan editors and release them. I'm not speaking against this as I love fan editing as much as anybody else here but piracy is piracy and you can't  throw stones while living in a glass house. There are not a lot of differences between fan edits and outright piracy either.  If you make a copy of a movie even if you hack it up to your own tastes, distributing it to other people is promoting a form of piracy. I can assure everyone that at least one person got a copy of said fan edit without owning a copy of the original version of the movie. Even then it goes back to my earlier statement about if studios wanted fan edits. Copying DVDs from  Netflix or wherever may not be the most honest thing in the world but at least people renting from Netflix are paying a service fee.

Copyright infringement and the questionable legality of the fan-edit hobby, and the outright theft of pirating a movie are very different things.

As long as one legally owns a copy of the film a fan-edit may be a lot of things, but a pirated-copy it is not.

As usual, Erik and I agree.  IF they release only the Special Editions with a seperate bonus disc, I'm keeping the bonus disc and selling the movies on ebay.
