Criterion is the industry leader in reference-quality when it comes to old films.

When you say 'reference quality' do you mean

1. The Best PQ/AQ to be had.

or

2. The Best PQ/AQ a particular film can have.

?

Huh? What's the difference?

The difference is that a film shot on grainy 8mm stock will never be #1.  But there could be a transfer of it that is #2.

I only know the term to mean "reference quality for DVD/BD" not "reference quality for that movie".

There are sites like avsforum that ascribe ratings to film releases, based on criteria they've established, but that's subjective.

Surely 'reference quality' is a subjective term no matter what your definition.

And to appease Mr. Frink:

Star Wars is coming to BD.  And Criterion is not doing it.

What more is there to post about? We don't control the details. Lucasfilm released the details, so there is nothing to add, there is only discussion and opinion on the details. One opinion was that the details suck and Criterion should handle it; Criterion's capability was then questioned, and then this was resolved with examples. Thats it. It's the topic--the topic of Star Wars on Blu Ray, what the details are, whether this is good or bad, and any other opinions related to it. The thread was never specified as being specifically about one aspect of it, but simply the release in general.

You'll probably know if there are more details released because everyone will be talking about them then, so come back when that happens if you don't want to hear about a Blu Ray restoration company that could have or could have not handled the job better than Lucasfilm.

The discussion started on-topic but then moved into a discussion of Criterion's work and how good/bad they are.  I don't care about the quality of Time Bandits on DVD and I shouldn't have to read about it in this thread.

*sigh*

I give up.  Enjoy your Criterion thread, guys.  I'll see you in September.

TV's Frink said:I'm shocked anyone thinks a discussion of Criterion quality, especially in relation to previous/current NON-SW work, is in any way on-topic.  Yes, I can ignore the posts, but then why do we need rules here?  Can't everyone ignore my Deal With It gifs just the same?

I don't know why this annoys you. Someone says "I wonder if Criterion could do SW." Someone else says, "Criterion isn't very good so why would you want that?" Three other people then say "actually, they are very good as seen in these examples." That's on topic, and it's only like 5 or 6 posts actually.

I must say, having gone through a lot of shots of the 2004 SE HD in great detail, there is quite a lot of grain there. So much actually, that I would have no problem believing that that's how grainy the o-neg is. When I say this though, I mean the 97SE conformed o-neg, where a lot of the original optical composites (which would be the grainiest parts of the original) were replaced by digitally recomposited ones. So if they got rid of the crushed blacks and f'ed-up colours, which are probably not a part of the scan but rather a later in the process screw-up, I think the 2004 scans could quite well be used for an original cut re-assembly.

Well... to be fair, someone said:

SO  : Criterion always does a great job.
I     : Not always.  2 of the 4 I have suck.
SOE: They don't suck, they have great special features (including alternate cuts)!
I     : Yeah, I mean the A/V sucks.
SOE2: It was as good as could be had at the time.
I     : Er... no it wasn't.

And it went on from there.

Who are you and what did you do with Frink? The Frink I know would rejoice at a thread being derailed and pour a few barrels of gasoline in the fire :-)

Frink already tested fate by posting a pic only post (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-coming-to-Blu-Ray-UPDATE-May-4th-2011/post/496809/#TopicPost496809) outside of off-topic.  He's gone mad from the lack of accountability.

Teh Rulez sez:

No image-only posts unless the image has a direct bearing on the topic at hand and it adds value to the discussion.

I think I'll be fine.

CARP!!!

It's too bad there hasn't been any actual footage from the release yet.  Is anything big coming up where we might see some footage, something like Comic-Con or Star Wars-Com or whatever?

HA! Victory! Actually, it was just my way of warning you about the dark side. Once you start down the Krally path, forever will it dominate your posts.

Supposedly, Star Wars presentations at comicon have always been pretty lame. And aimed only at the devoted flock. "Hey guys, do you like BOBA FETT? Here are the housewares he will appear on in the coming year" I can't see them doing anything substantive there, like getting into the nitty gritty of what exactly has been done to the movies this time and why.

Boba Fett?  You mean Jango Fett's son, right?

the Yahoo! UK homepage, tonight:

One fan tweeted "wait...so the big Star Wars announcement was that its coming out on Blu Ray? That was announced in January. @StarWars you have failed me", another said " 'Again, us loyal fans have been cheated with another release of digitally "enhanced" nonsense. Boycott this item and demand the original theatrical versions on Blu-Ray!!'"

It so undignified, poor abused Star Wars.

It's like finding your teen-aged son's copy of GILF Centerfold under his bed with a compromising photo of your mother in it.

If Lucas really needed the money that much all he had to do was ask.

Hardly a backlash, there are "fans" who constantly whine about the special editions, but its always been like that. The only thing in the announcement that dissapointed me was the awful covers, other than that, role on the 12th September.

This one is my favorite.  What with the "fans" in quotes, and whatever "role" there apparently is to play on September 12th.  Well, at least he hates the covers too.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Criterion is definitely good enough even as a small studio that their newer HD transfers of Kurosawa's films were borrowed in Japan for the Japanese releases.

Some of the films had no original negative but the new scans were done at 2K.

Cannot remember the exact titles i think it was Toho who used the US masters.  They did the same for Godzilla, which i think is horrible as the us release is junk in comparison to the new prints they were running in theaters for the anniversary release.

As for the oot the metaphor i see is like the original movies except this time the evil empire won, and the rebellion aka oot fans lost.

Once again the true fans of the real star wars trilogy circa 1977-1983 are screwed.  Lucas excuse this time "its an oxymoron" to restore the films.

Its not an oxymoron more like Moronic not to restore and release what people want.

I sense the ghost of lovey Sir Alec tweeting from heaven.

He remembers that "fan" is short for "fanatic" and he is taking advantage of the Tweet to also promote his role in "The Third Fluffy Cloud To Your Left Shakespeare Company"'s production of "the Scottish play".

Do you see?
