Star Wars and "betrayal"

One thing that I have never fully understood is how betrayal is dealt with in the OT. People get pissed at Han because he wants to leave and pay off Jabba the Hutt. This is so he can erase both the debt and the death mark on his head! General Riekan knows this, yet everybody else gets pissed! Why? Lando is forced to give up his best friend in order to protect and save the citizens of Cloud City. Leia and Chewie would understandably be angry, but Lando had no choice!

General Reiken understood because he wasn't IN LOOOOOOOVE wih Han like Leia was. And Luke was disapointed in Han in "Star Wars" because he was young and naivily optimistic (although also right).

Also, Lando didn't KNOW he was giving up his best friend. Vader altered the deal. Lando was just helping Vader get 'somebody called Skywalker."

I always thought Han forgiving lando so easily was a bit unrealistic.  Had Lando not saved Luke and then Helped to save Han he should be on the other end of hans blaster being capped.

I remember reading someplace that people thought after seeing empire strikes back that George Lucas was racist because the guy who double crosses han solo who is a white guy is black.  The Traitor who gets almost everyone's goose cooked is played by a black man.

People are sensitive about these things.  They said Jar Jar was a bad racist charicature which could have come out of disney's song of the south.

And Here i thought you were going to talk about the novel Legacy of the Force betrayal.

According to Obi Wan in Return of The Jedi Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker because he betrayed the man he once was.

"They said you were the chosen one.  The one who would bring balance to the force. Not Leave it in darkness".

Obi Wan in Revenge of the Sith

All the dialog where Han and Lando actually patch things up ended up being cut as it was in the infamous sandstorm scene.

Totally agree... The last time Han saw Lando, he was being lowered into the carbon freeze chamber. Hating the guy.

Then the next time he sees Lando - or "hears" him, I should say - is on the sail barge, when Lando's calling for help. His reaction should've been "Lando?! SCREW that guy!" instead of just "Lando!" and rushing to help him.

Actually... now that I think about it, I guess Chewie would've explained everything to Han while they were in the dungeon. Hmm. Either way, it was kind of out-of-character for Han to forgive him so easily. It would've been more interesting if he acted pretty icy towards Lando for the rest of the movie, perhaps finally forgiving him at the end and embracing him at the ewok party.

That would have made Han seem mean-spirited. Remember, this guy was risking his life to rescue Han. They obviously didn't want Han to come off mean-spirited. I like it fine the way it is, with Han being a cheerful good sport. Much more fun.

Yeah, it works for me too. I do think logically Han would have been rather resentful, but it would stand to reason that Chewie would explain things too him, and likely Han would have reacted "Lando!! That POS is here! When I get my hands on him..." and Chewie would have told him to be reasonable and explain all Lando has gone through in order to set things right, and the kind of pressure he was under by the Empire, etc. I can suspend my disbelief. Besides, being a smuggler and scoundral, Han is sure to know exactly what hide preservation is all about.
