I like it, good job. I definitely think the shot of the AT-AT firing should be flipped horizontally, I think that would greatly improve the scene.

I think that if you flip the shot then it won’t make sense. It is meant to look like Finn’s right speeder wing gets hit so you would expect an AT AT to be shooting from that angle.

Watching it again I see what you mean. I was thinking that it would better match the direction Finn looks, and the angle the scene is shot at in general. Works either way though.

That is a good point in regards to the angle that the whole scene is shot in. The only issue is you see the shuttle for Kylo right next to the AT-AT and if you flip the shot then his shuttle is in the wrong place. I will try cropping it out and then if that works, I think I will implement your suggestion for the sake of visual flow 😃

I think it’s the shot of the targeting computer that’s throwing it off. Because the screen shows the speeder from behind, but the AT-AT fires from the front. If the targeting computers screen mimicked the viewpoint of the AT-AT, it would make the transition between the different angles much smoother, and easier to quickly orient yourself. But without making new animations for the screen, this is somewhat unavoidable.

Overall though, this is really working for me. Great work!

Thanks for the thumbs up, I’m glad I got it right!

No Leaf Joke

https://vimeo.com/265290771

-Cut from Rey saying “Okay” to Luke resting her hand on the rock.
-Replaced “Reach out with your feelings” with just “Reach out”

Looks great. Can’t even tell there were any changes made. Even though I thought this was one of the best jokes of the film, I must admit that seeing it played straight is much more effective.

Thanks! And I’ll be honest, it quite literally made me laugh out loud (very well done) so it was a tough decision to make but it just works so much better when it is played seriously.

Wow. I really enjoyed that moment in the theater, but my goodness, it really does play out better like this. You’ve convinced me.

Here’s another attempt, this time trying to include the shot of Luke discarding the reed he is shown holding. I submit it to get a sense of whether people think the shot is better in or out.

Both were done really well … I have to say I like the leaf joke though…

That works great Hal! I’ll drop that addition into my timeline. It helps bridge the moment between her saying “Okay” and him resting her hand down.

Like all of you, the leaf joke was just so darn good. It was executed perfectly and was so hard to cut.

Here are two clips showing how I refocused the Supremacy sequence. I streamlined the Supremacy infiltration to give the whole sequence better flow and lend more focus to Snoke/Kylo/Rey.

First Clip (They Enter Ship)

https://vimeo.com/263992324

-Cut Iron gag
-Cut everything in the dressing room
-Cut BB-8 tripping a trooper
-Cut evil BB unit scanning them.

Second Clip (No Talk At Door)

https://vimeo.com/263993419

-Cut entire part of Rose/Finn/DJ arriving at door, everything with the medallion, etc.
-The next time we see them they are at the door, asking DJ how much longer it will take.

Pretty seamless! I really like the pacing of the second clip. Did you cut Rose giving DJ her necklace since you cut him giving it back? Because we do see her wearing it later in the film.

Oh danggg. That shouldn’t be too hard. I can cut her giving it to DJ and just start that scene with DJ stealing from the ship. And his conversation with Finn is the one meaningful thing from that whole scene so no issues there.

Kylo Pleads to Rey Rescoring - UPDATED

https://vimeo.com/265136372

I tried to build upon many suggestions when I got to finetuning this rescoring.

-Firstly, the music now fades out when we cut to the bridge with Hux. I was able to bridge the rising drums between two points at the end of the piece to do so and it flows pretty well.
-The music has been turned down a notch so that the dialogue can stand out more.
-The music now starts earlier and fades in more gradually.
-The dialogue audio has been polished up.

Please tell me how you all like the updates to the scene!

This is a rare case of rescoring with a prequel theme that actually works for me. In fact, I kind of love it.

There’s just one thing that bugs me. Now that the music is so much more dramatic, Kylo’s lines about her parents being ‘filthy junk traders’ sounds a bit quotidian and out of place. This is also a result of Rian’s penchant for having characters overexplain things, so I’d really like to hear a version where Kylo is silent after Rey says ‘They were nobody’. Maybe just skip right to ‘You have no place in this story’, and maybe show her reaching out to take Kylo’s hand before cutting to the cruiser turning around.

This would also avoid the confusion of Rey’s vision where she clearly sees a ship flying away from Jakku.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

The only place I see a little disconnect between the music and dialogue is when Kylo says “You come from nothing, your nothing.” It might just be his delivery but it is the one spot it might a feel not epic enough. I don’t really have an issue with him describing where her parents came from. It feels like he is basically spitting in her face and driving it home how pathetic her lineage is.

I will consider making the cut though and welcome others opinions on this idea. I love your suggestions for fanedits Neverar so keep em coming, the one about the flashback with Luke and Kylo still has me thinking 😉

About the lines being out of place, it feels like for a Star Wars movie less is more where dialogue is concerned. Some of the best scenes in Star Wars have no dialogue at all, allowing the audience to imagine the specifics of the scene. So when Kylo beats Rey over the head with her nonexistent lineage, it’s giving the audience information that would be better left to the imagination (especially since the details of this information don’t quite fit with what we already know).

I know there have been many versions of this change but here’s my take on removing the prank phone call between Hux and Poe. I am in the camp of removing it all together, so this specific cut only applies if you are fine with the entire joke being gone.

https://vimeo.com/265904489

-Brought forward music after Poe says “Happy beeps”
-Sped up Poe hitting a button to imply that he is hitting it to boost his X-wing forward.

I don’t really mind the leaf joke as I think it illustrates a difference between the light and dark sides, one is about life and the other is about subverting life for power, one side uses play as a learning device (all the way back to Yoda hiding his identity when he meets Luke) and the other has no use for play or humor.
Some of the humor in TLJ should be reduced or redacted however some of it has it’s place. There’s always been humor in this franchise, let’s not be hung up on grimdarking it too much.
I suspect that the Han Solo movie is going to be very funny, probably more than any Star Wars movie to date. I’m suspecting funny and goofy and honestly I can’t wait. If there is a trifecta of characters that could pull off a Star Wars movie that is downright humorous I think it is Han, Lando and Chewie.

Someone on FE.org asked about what deleted scenes I will be using so I thought it would be a good idea to paste my response here. The user, samspider (an awesome faneditor), was asking if I would include the caretaker deleted scene for context of my response.

"In regards to deleted scenes, I have taken a close look at all of them and think I will only be using one of them and that would be Luke Mourning. I am not sure yet where I will use it since I think it can go in a number of places but I will use it for sure.

The reason for not including the Caretaker scene is a few reasons:

1. I really like us seeing a ray of hope for Luke and Rey at the end of their second lesson and then its sadder to see that it doesn’t work out. I think this was one of Rian Johnson’s own reasons for cutting it.
2. It portrays Luke in an unfashionable light. In the second lesson, we see Luke very broken and sincere. He opens up to Rey and seems to grow more understanding of the need for him. The deleted scene shows Luke straight up lying to Rey and laughing it off. I think it kinda shows us that Luke will let nothing change his mind. Whereas in the theatrical cut, you get the sense that he was close to changing his mind at the end of the second lesson.
3. Lastly, just for pacing reasons. It is a very long scene and since I don’t like it very much for reasons above, it just makes sense to keep it out of the film to keep the pacing at a nice brisk flow."
