Most efficient programs for capturing video from VHS

I have a few old tapes I would like to preserve in digital format and so far, I've only tried Nerovision, which is very slow and choppy. I was quite disappointed with it. Are there any smaller, more efficient programs I can use? Also, is there any way to defeat Macrovision without buying some sort of external decoder dealy?

Try VirtualDub for capturing.

Also, Macrovision removal has been discussed several times previously. A search of this forum should bring up some useful threads.
