People seem to think Mara Jade has some kind of secret following among the common folk that won’t require any kind of explanation about who she is, just adding her will make an instant hit. Meanwhile in the Doctor Who thread, people were telling stories about educating people who Spock is, who actually has a cultural impact.

I always confuse Mara Jade with Doctor Jade.

Meanwhile in the Doctor Who thread, people were telling stories about educating people who Spock is, who actually has a cultural impact.
I’m fully aware most people have no idea who she is, but adding her in wouldn’t require that much explanation, especially if she’s missing/dead by the ST days and it doesn’t matter who she is.

“Mara Jade is your mother!”
“Who?”
“You know, Emperor’s Hand, she helped do Palpatine’s dirty work.”
“An Inquisitor?”
“No…”
“A Dark Jedi?”
“Not quite.”
“Well, how’d she get together with you?”
“After she tried to kill me for years and turned out OK and I gave her this lightsaber, I feel in love with a computer–”
“I thought Jedi weren’t allowed to love.”
“Look, kid, who’s the teacher here?”

But what you really want is a throwaway line where it doesn’t matter. Which means the whole “who are Rey’s parents?” plot might end up being “Luke and a random lady” for 95% of the audience.

005 Seems hung up on the whole marriage to Luke angle where I think most who want Mara Jade would be happy with her back in her Emperor’s Hand days. I don’t really care either way, I haven’t read enough of her stories to get a real feel for the character.
Now if there’s one set of characters who SHOULD be re-canonized, it’s Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors. Just leave them as mercenaries, no need for all that Force user business. 😉

I think he’s just jealous of Mrs. Jade.

What I really want is “not Luke,” but if Luke is the father, who else would be the mother other than a random lady? Unless there’s a woman on the island we don’t know about who’s been living with Luke all these years.

I’ve got it: Rey was conceived by the Force, like Anakin, but this time there was no mother.

That’s the wrong picture, but I can see why you’d get confused. Clearly my impeccable graphic design skills are on professional poster making level:

The title is covering up Luke’s thumb, which is a dead giveaway.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Leia, of course.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Game of Thrones has got a lot of milage off incest.
I just ordered Claudia Gray’s Leia: Princess of Alderaan. I really liked Bloodline and having another Leia-centric novel by her is cool. I might pick up Phasma depending on the reviews.
It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher
I picked up both yesterday but I’m not sure which I’m going to read first. I’m leaning toward Phasma right now just because Claudia Gray is a known quantity at this point and I’m curious as to how Delilah Dawson does Star Wars. Also, she said on Twitter the other day that she wanted to please people who “own 4 different versions of Episode IV”, and the fact that an insider was willing to acknowledge that there even are multiple cuts filled me with good will.
Force Friday II releases aside, I’ve been wondering lately if we’ll ever see another large-scale adventure with established characters in a book once the ST is finished. I get that they’re holding off on that kind of thing now because the movies are filling that role, but I really hope we eventually get some one-offs like Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor again instead of everything either being on a very small scale or exclusively featuring original characters.

Let me know what you think of it.
I’m betting we see something with Luke after The Last Jedi or 9. I would love an Adventures of Luke Skywalker animated series with Mark Hamill doing the voice. But I see what you mean, the stories in the books are a bit small scale, relying more on personal relationships than big battles except for the Final Aftermath book. Maybe there will be a gap between Last Jedi and 9 where we can get a good Leia farewell novel or show the war between the First Order and the Resistance.

Yay, someone else who’s read Shadows of Mindor! Stover really needs to come back for a canon novel or two.
There is a Luke book coming out in the next couple months, though I imagine it’s in the same small-scale vein as the new Leia book.
I’m about a third of the way through Phasma and it’s not at all what I expected. There’s a hefty dose of that old Legends-style weirdness, which is kind of a welcome surprise. There’s an espionage frame story that’s kind of neat, and Phasma’s pre-military life has almost a Mad Max vibe, which I feel like we haven’t seen before. It’s not as good as Thrawn or Bloodline, but it’s certainly more interesting that a fair few of the other canon novels.
Will it make me give a shit about Chrome Boba Fett?
I need to finish catching up on the canon material. So far I’ve read (in publication order):
I got through about 15 pages of Heir to the Jedi before I gave up. I’m working my way through Ahsoka right now but keep getting distracted by other things.
Are Guardians of the Whills and Rebel Rising worth picking up? I was under the impression they were junior novelizations of parts of Rogue One but apparently I’m mistaken on that…?
