Bad burn or bad download, I'd say.
Bad burn or bad download, I'd say.
I found a Verbatim DVD+R DL RW laying around that I'd forgotten I had, so I fired up Toast 9 and decided to give double layer burning a shot to see how well it would work. Naturally, I chose SW v3 to test. Toast seems to have no provision for setting a layer change point, so I have no idea exactly where it ended up, but my new dvd player is far better at seamlessly changing layers than my old one, so there was no interruption at all. Since the burn went so well, I figured I might as well watch the whole thing.
Being the first time I've actually watched the movie in well over a year, I was really excited, both to see how well G-force's script improved the image and just to see the movie for its own sake. I was not disappointed on either account. Star Wars is that rare movie that's nearly perfect in every way, and this is the best I've seen it look so far without using the 2004 version as a source. The elimination of most of the instability in the image is the biggest improvement, but there are many others as well.
Sure, I was occasionally distracted by what aliasing and smear are still present; sure the available resolution isn't very high; and sure I noticed a few places in the recreated 70mm track where I could have done a bit better with the audio editing . . . but on the whole, this was the best damn two hours I've spent in ages. SW is still my favourite movie ever, and this presentation certainly does not disappoint. Within the limits of the source material, it's very nearly as good as it could ever be, and almost everything about it just seems so right. Really looking forward to seeing ESB and RotJ, too.
Now that I know I can burn and play double layer discs reliably (setting it as a dvd-rom probably helped), I'm going to order some to make permanent copies, for myself and possibly for friends/family if they're interested. Although it seems likely that other people's dvd players might not be as good at layer changes, so maybe I'll have to see about setting that with a different program first, to ensure them an uninterrupted movie experience. (On the other hand, I might just wait for Harmy's de-SE'd single layer versions and send them those instead; haven't decided. 'Normal' people won't be interested in having multiple copies of the movies, like we are.)
This was the first time I've actually heard the 5.1 while watching the movie, and from a slightly narcissistic perspective I was really thrilled with it. lol But beyond that, I was blown away by what a great job they did mixing the 70mm version back in '77, and how its superb dynamic range and overall vibe leaves the SE mixes in the dust (particularly that wretched 2004 mess). I'm just glad I could help to get that back.
So let's give big props to everyone who worked on this set, and keep the love for the real Star Wars going. :)

Good to hear it!
Great news!
@ any cover artists that view this thread, would you be interested in making up a Blu-ray "retail" looking cover set for this set?
I think the DVDs are good enough to gift to people.
My bro has an HD set and no blu ray player, but i think he will be pretty surprised with your V3.
Still trying to find a company with reliable dual layer media since practically all verbatims are now made in India and are junk. 50% failure rate for some people is not acceptable.
Guess i will have to pay a pirates ransom and get some expensive archive quality dvd9's which match up to the quality of the dvd5's of taiyo yuden.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

50% failure rate? Practically all made in India now?
Sure.
*eyeroll*
I've never gotten Verbatims from India through Amazon. All Singapore.

dark_jedi: Looks very impressive. :) About the DTS-HD Master Audio, was that newly encoded at 2098 kbps from the lossless master audio file of hairy_hen's restored Star Wars 70mm 5.1 "purist" soundtrack?
Thanks for any info. :)
The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Yes it is, and the "purist" versions are the only ones that will be on this set, some may notice a difference between the DTS-HD MA 5.1 compared to the Dolby Digital 5.1, some may not, but my oldest Son said it was pretty cool seeing the DTS-HD on his receiver LOL, either way it is on there and not going anywhere, it is what it is.
I updated this post http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Theatrical-DVD-Info/post/494062/#TopicPost494062 with the cover ABC just finished up as well as updated specs.

I suggest just doing a little research. JVC DL's made in Japan worked just as good as the Verbatims people talk about and they are just as reliable for the long term. They don't cost as much as the Verbatims but it doesn't mean they are crap either.
Do a search on eBay....10pk's of these are very affordable. You chose what works best for you. It's the best way to know.
If you are having such high failure rates your drive may need a firmware update or it just doesn't work well with certain discs. I've found that my HP laptop drive kinda sucks when it comes to burning any kind of discs so I use my desktop for that and just use the laptop for read only. As crazy as it sounds it can sometimes be the simplest of things causing errors.
Thanks for that info Jetrell, but I will stick with my Singapore Verbatims, if you find DL blanks for a lot cheaper, 9 times out of 10 there is a reason for that, you get what you pay for, we are already seeing blank Blu-ray discs failing after just 6 short months, brands like Ritek, Memorex, etc. they write fine, but then fail within a year, sorry, I do not want to take that chance, I have Verb Dl's that are 3 and 4 years old and still read and play great, so thanks for the info, it might help others, but for me, you can keep'em.
Here is an updated pic with the cover, ABC modified the DVD disc labels for this set also, but I still need a retail looking set, can someone help me out?
Just how retail are you talking? ;)
Are you talking less white space on the cover?

You know that is a damn good question, I just want it to look like something you would see sealed on the store shelf for sale, with like the grid on the lower back cover with all specs, I will see if I can find something for an example, are you interested?

I am not talking about modifying ABC's covers, those look GREAT just the way they are, I just want an alternate retail looking set as well, I am still trying to find an example, I know in my head kind of what I want, I want the old OT look and feel, but a newer retail look, I would like it if all 3 matched, either in basic design, spines when on shelf, or both, does this make any sense?
I want this art to be for those that want to place these on the shelf next to the Saga Set coming this Fall.
Is it a matter of simply adding MORE TEXT to the back? It has a retail look without resorting to the dreaded bar-code.
Honestly, I don't think the case needs any work, it is the disc art that needs a bit of help. It still feels like it is for a fan project and not a studio released film.

Ya know, I don't think I've ever opened a DVD case and been surprised or pleased with the disc art. But then, I'm not usually impressed with the cover art either :P
These Blu-Rays are going to kick some serious ass. Thank you DJ.
I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

You are absolutely right about the bar-code, definitely do not want that, if you are interested, I can send a few pics of what I am trying to achieve with this, you have done artwork before so I am sure you probably already have some real nice OT posters and hirez scans.
OH and 1 more thing Sluggo, ABC emailed me and wanted me to quote his question to you, he said that you would understand, so here it is,
"How's that the labels to be redone ? Who the hell do you think you are, again ?!!!"
