Those sns are sweet. Though I don't have HD I'll be watching anyhow. Least the material will help the x0 project and maybe other of the preservation efforts!

I've tidied up this thread, and moved it into the Star Wars Preservation forum where I think it is more relevant.

There was a pull-out ad for this in Entertainment Weekly, complete with breathing Darth Vader when you open it.

Are these really going to be HD, or like, upconverted?
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

Wow, do those 1080p screen caps from A New Hope look gorgeous or what?! Obi-Wan looks incredible in that one shot in the cantina, it's super detailed!

I have a question, I assume that the upcoming Cinemax HD broadcast will not be at full 1920x1080p, right? When they say HD on t.v. they mean something like 768p at most, right?

Also, where did that fellow get those 1080p screencaps from A New Hope? It's never been released in 1080p, and even the upcoming Cinemax HD broadcast might not be 1080p.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Too bad it's impossible for these to be in 1080p.

They're all 1080i.
Author
Time
It's not impossible for them to be in 1080p. All 24fps material is essentially 1080p, even if broadcast at 1080i, for the simple reason you can IVTC 1080i and recover the 1080p24 original.

Time
Exactly right! There is no difference between 1080i and 1080P once you IVTC back to the original frames - none at all.

I never saw this German release on any newsgroups or anywhere?

Looks like someones started posting a version of it to the newsgroups (the logical one for hdtv - am i allowed to name it or is that forbidden?):
"Star Wars - Episode 4 : A New Hope. (1920x1080i h264-to-mpeg-2 reencode)"Episode IV reencode"

I'm surprised that the German HDTV-version of ANH (the caps posted at MF.com) doesn't contain the "Star Wars" opening logo, as on the German 2004 DVDs, but the remastered German "Krieg der Sterne"-logo, which was only used in the 1997 SE...

Is it considered illegal to download these movies in HD even though they have not been released in an HD format?

Grrrr why re-encode it

I wonder where the original H264 version is hiding...

Does this German HD t.v. broadcast of "A New Hope" have a DD 2.0 soundtrack with the original English voices but with German subtitles, or are the voices dubbed in German? If it has German subtitles, but the original voices in English, were the German subtitles placed below the picture in the black bars where they can be easily removed?

Laserman: Does that video re-encode mean that visual quality was lost compared to the original 1080p broadcast version that was encoded by the t.v. station in H264 format? And if so, why would they do that, surely any Star Wars fan would want to keep every ounce of video quality from the original broadcast?

I take it watching the hd SW on a reg tv wouldn't have the same effect?
(I'm not too up-to-date on hd, etc)
Author

They do it because even Dual core Conroes have trouble keeping up with the demands of playback of H264 material at those bitrates.
Re-encoding to MPEG2 means that a 3.2GHz machine can keep up, but you lose quality in the re-encode.

And no, there would be no point watching them on a standard TV, but even on a small computer monitor it is worth a look to see the detail.

Watching it on a set top HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movie player would eliminate any need to worry about handling H264 encoded video, and no video quality would have to be lost. I assume the original H264 encoded version was kept for backup purposes.

Zeromancer: You mean like when aliens are speaking that is all printed in German right in the picture area itself (not in the bottom black bar), but the human voices are all in English?

I'll bet you also gain a lot of size -- not what you want when downloading.

You are allowed to mention names of newsgroups such as alt.binaries.hdtv. Just don't post a link to a NZB file.
