I remember reading somewhere it had something to do with the NTSC/PAL conversion. Oh well, we gotta work with what we have. :/

I think you should use the PAL DVD for ROTJ - at least, according to anyone in this forum, this is better than NTSC!
Is this a title suitable for the PaNup technique (plus SR processing)?
If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

But Moth3r and others have said it's only SLIGHTLY better than it's NTSC counterpart.

Nope, as the PAL version is actually a bad NTSC conversion...

Yep, but slightly better is always better than equal... plus, it has (obviously) more lines to work with, so...

Any chance we could get some screenshot comparisons with a simple 1080 upscale of the original? The download is taking quite a while for me at least.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Saw the clip this afternoon. This is an outstanding job. Can't believe you did this with such a bad source.
Amazing.

Thanks for the compliments! Glad you liked it. :-)
At this point I'm planning to use the NTSC versions for all three films, but if ROTJ really looks better with SR, I'll reconsider.
I'm planning to make it bluray compatible, and if there's a demand for it, I will also create a DVD-9.
The rendering takes a little longer, but all good things come to those who wait... :-P
allow me to officially voice my interest in a DVD-9 release.
Just watched this again. It is so good! I love it! Now to get nit-picky just in case you want to refine it further... Because it is so good now, other issues are more obvious. I never noticed it but R2D2 has a compartment door swinging open right after C3PO says we're doomed and no escape for the princess this time.
Here are some things that could probably be fixed fairly easily:
- Gate weave. This is probably the biggest noticeable distraction now. It is very easy to fix, at least in After Effects. It can be done scene by scene by selecting a stationary area or two and telling it not to let it move.
- The Lucasfilm logo at the beginning has noticeable aliasing as does other very specific scenes every so often such as the R2D2 closeup. For specific scenes, I would suggest to crank up the anti-aliasing at the expense of the detail gained from SR
- Resolution - Should be 1920x1080 and encoded at 4:2:0 to be blu-ray compatible. For those wanting a DVD-9, it would be super easy to downconvert the 1080p version very quickly and it wouldn't need to be recalculated the time consuming way.
-Ringing/halos - they are in the source, but maybe there is a filter to hunt them down and destroy them just like there is for aliasing.
Not saying you should do any of this, but it would make it even better if you did! ;-)
Thanks again!
Sorry, I was asleep. Here are a couple of screenshot comparisons:

Now I'm off to work... :-P
Update:
I'm working on some further improvements. There are some conflicts with some of the Avisynth plugins, but that will hopefully be resolved.
It looks just marvelous!

Simply gorgeous. Thanks for all your hard work DrDre (and to all the forum posters & community for contributing such constructive feedback).
"Sometimes themes come very painfully after hours of holding my head in my hands at the piano. Days can go by and I'll think it is never going to come. Then I'll sit down at the piano and it sort of pops into my mind; after two weeks of frustration, it just appears out of nowhere. Other times, I might think about a theme for a character and get it straight off. It is a strange and mysterious and frustrating process, almost impossible to describe." - John Williams (1979)
Hey looks like we're back! :-)

So what's new?
The next version of the SR script will have significantly less aliasing, while preserving most of the detail. I'm also experimenting with some stabilization, but that's still in a test phase. It will be a little while before I can post a sample. The first step now is to do the antialiasing for the whole film, which sadly takes ~12 days, with 9 days to go. Then this result will be combined with SR, degrained, dehaloed, possibly stabilized, and finally upscaled to 1080p.
Thanks to the community for the feedback!
Ps. Sorry for the late reply. The weather here has been marvelous, so I went sailing...
Wow, sounds really great! I hope it all works out well at the end of the process!
Here are some work in progress screenshots. These are the raw SR outputs at 720p, so no degraining, dehaloing etc.

Link has been corrected. :-)
These new shots look far less flat - the 3 dimensional aspect has been restored.
Preferred Saga:
1,2: Numeraljoker extended
3: L8wrtr
4,6-9: Hal9000
5: Adywan
Totally awesome! There seems to be quite a bit more detail in there! Your third link needs to be incremented by one number, but I saw it. :-) I can't wait to see the dehaloing.

Agreed! They are clearer and crisper. I am not sure degraining is a good idea.
The aliasing issue has been adressed much better in this version, especially in http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/130438 (which you did not post, but posted 130437 two times ;)
Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:
And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle. It just doesn’t make sense!
Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!
Damn You!!!
They are clearer, but also have more noise than the source. Take this screenshot for example:
I'm perfectly happy with the added noise vs the depth loss. Honestly, this is by far the best I've seen your examples look and I'd be happy if the final release was done with SR11 Raw.
Any chance at seeing some 1080p results?

Amazing once again! I agree that the grain is perfectly fine and quite probably preferred. I would like to see how the dehalo filtering goes though! Great job!
