Wouldn't it be cool if the new movie starts of right at the end of ROTJ while the Emperor is electrocuting Luke.....Vader says his big "No,ooooooooooooooo!" lifts Palpy and throws him over the edge......but this time the camera follows The Emperor down.....his force lightning blows up a power source which blows him sideways onto another platform......as he slowly drags himself to the lift he sees the lift is operating....it's Luke & Vader making their escape.....he franticly calls the lift and eventually it returns.

Palpy makes it back up to the Throne Room and activates his emergency escape.....the entire Throne Room detaches from the tower......and the Emperor is away.....just before the Death Star explodes......he gasps "I'll get you Skywalker,.....just you wait!"

...........Na....thats shite

"We aren't going to follow stories in the EU."

Follows EU.

Of course it's just a rumor, possibly not true.

“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”

I'd say the chances of it being true are less than 5%.

I don't think Sith can appear as ghosts. Hologram or a Sith holocron image is another matter entirely.

Normally, I wouldn't bring this up, but seeing as you mentioned a Sith holocron, which is itself an invent of the EU and doesn't feature in any of the films ...

Lucas got the name of Coruscant from the EU, so I figure the door is open to such things. There's no reason Luke or someone else can't find one in a desolate ruin somewhere. It doesn't have to be overly explained to the audience what the gizmo does once it's seen in action. In some ways they are like the Kryptonian crystals in the Superman films.

I may be wrong but wasn't the name Coruscant in the 1977 original novelisation of Star Wars? One could say that it is some kind of "EU" but not really, IMO.

No, it was Timothy Zahn who came up with the name Coruscant in Heir to the Empire novel. Before this, the name of the Imperial Capital was Had Abbadon.

JJ's STID named worst ST film ever in convention vote...

http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/star-trek-into-darkness-named--worst-star-trek-film--073112668.html

Quote "Doesn't bode well for Star Wars, does it?"

Here's the rankings in full:

13. 'Star Trek Into Darkness'
12. 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier'
11. 'Star Trek Insurrection'
10. 'Star Trek Nemesis'
9. 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture'
8. 'Star Trek Generations'
7. 'Galaxy Quest'
6. 'Star Trek'
5. 'Star Trek: The Search For Spock'
4. 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home'
3. 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country'
2. 'Star Trek: First Contact'
1. 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan'

WTF SERIOUSLY!?!?

These people clearly need to watch these films again (ST5 is underated, so is Insurrection but something has to come bottom) Not naming the abortion that is Nemesis as worst is madness. Ranking Galaxy Quest in there is great though and the top 3 is spot on. If anybody is interested (I'm guessing not lol) then here is my ordering...

01. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
02. Star Trek: First Contact
03. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
04. tar Trek: The Search For Spock
05. Star Trek
06. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
07. Star Trek Insurrection
08. Star Trek Into Darkness
09. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
10. Star Trek Generations
11. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
12. Star Trek Nemesis

My own personal ranking

1. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

2. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (bet no one excepted this, eh?)

3. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

4. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

5. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (this ranking is tenous, though, as I really need to rewatch the film)

6. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

7. Star Trek: First Contact

8: Star Trek: Generations

9 Star Trek: Insurrection

10. Star Trek: Nemesis

Haven't seen either of the Bizarro Trek films - and never will - but I would probably rate them far beneath Nemesis if I ever were to.

 No.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

You should give JJ's 2 new Treks a go, they're alot of fun. Plus you can be safe in the knowledge that since it takes place in an alternate time stream our old friends are still safe.

Most rate 'Voyage Home' very highly, not me. Sure in isolation it's a very funny lighthearted comedy, but a Star Trek film, I think not. Where is conflict between the characters, the dastardly villain, the agonising moral decisions and of course where are the thrilling space battles?

If ST's 2-4 where a standalone trilogy like the SW:OT, fans would be up in arms about STIV! Can you imagine if we'd walked into theatres in 1983 and discovered that after the epic build up in ANH and ESB, ROTJ had just been Han, Luke, Leia and co d*cking about in 1980s San Francisco and saving some Whales?

btw Would love to see Shatner's much longer cut of ST5 before the studio ripped it apart.

Oh wow, a non scientific poll taken of a few hundred hardcore fans at a Trek con three months after the movie came out? What a shocker! ;)

The merits, (or lack thereof) of STID aside, the deck was pretty stacked against it in this scenario. It's like putting all of us in a room to rank the prequels. It's a foregone conclusion.

That article trying to spin it into meaning trouble for Episode VII is a stretch, since the STID scriptwriters aren't involved.

If this thread turns into another "Rank The Franchise Films" thread, especially one not Star Wars related, I will poke my eye out with my twooffour ice pick.

To be fair, the problems with Into Darkness stem from the script and not from Abrams' direction. That's why I hope this rumor of Orci/Kurtzman and maybe even Lindelof working on the Ep7 script aren't true. These people have already been involved in just about every other big genre property of the last several years. Adding Star Wars to the list because their friend happened to get the directing gig would just be greedy.

ETA: SilverWook beat me to it.

Also,

Ryan McAvoy, that's exactly what I've been thinking for years now! Someone finally said it!

Sorry, but my mind's made up. Aside from the idea that the act of travelling through time creates parallel universes, everything - and I mean every single, solitary thing - I've heard, read, or seen about either movie is goddamn awful. I'd rather watch all the worst episodes of TNG along with Insurrection and Nemesis in one, long sitting than see anything from Abrams' tripe.

Besides, if you have to sacrifice intelligence for "fun", then I'd rather have the gods strike me down for apostasy.

Plus you can be safe in the knowledge that since it takes place in an alternate time stream our old friends are still safe.

I tell that to myself all the time in regards to the original Stargate film and Stargate SG-1 - it's still just a cold comfort at best, and means absolutely nothing in the end.

Star Trek TMP and IV are - I'd argue - the most Trek like of the films since the TV series. You don't need another (yawn!) villain of the week or yet another damned space battle for good Trek! And plenty of conflict between Bones and Spock (as always) and Kirk & Spock & McCoy at various points in the story. Plenty of moral decisions too throughout the course of the film; They're saving Earth without the go ahead from Starfleet, and using Time Travel to do it! Trek IV is first & foremost about the characters, and it also had the balls & imagination not to be yet another revenge based story, and had a worthwhile message at heart too. It's Classic Trek! Much of the humour in the 60s series was very goofy at times (esp. the last few mins on the bridge of many episodes), and Trek IV nailed that exact charm/chemistry perfectly. Trek needed lightening up again after the Wrath of Khan and Search For Spock! I loved the environmental theme too, even though it may come over as heavy handed by todays standards.

Interesting how different Treks appeal to different people! :)

Agreed completely on the desire to see a recut/re-edited version of Trek V though, without any budgetary constraints. There's a semi-decent film in there somewhere.

Guys, guys, there is a whole thread in Off-Topic for this discussion.

True

But the title of thread includes the words "directed by J.J. Abrams" so discussion of the merits of JJ's Trek compared to old Trek are entirely valid IMO.
