So, large sets? Maybe model spaceships?

Sounds good. Also, props for comparing it to Pacific Rim. Del Toro is a fan of old-school effects, so if the new trilogy is even bigger the Pacific Rim on physical/analogue effect, I'm very excited.

The excitement level has definitely gone up a couple of notches.

Maybe they'll hire back all the old school ILM guys that left? I don't think those CGI kids know how to kitbash. ;)

Where were you in '77?

Also, the robes... agh, the robes! It made sense for Ben (Obi-Wan) to wear one in the desert. It actually fit with the rest of the Tatooine clothing.

Yoda pretty much wore rags. The only one who wore an actual robe was the Emperor but he is a kind of evil space wizard, in all honesty...

The robes... that's another thing that bugs me about the PT.  Before the PT, I always thought that Obiwan and Yoda were wearing rags because they were in exile, not because that's what they wore as Jedi.  In SW, every pilot we see is wearing a cool pilot's uniform (except Darth).  And we learn that Obiwan and Anakin were pilots.  So why should we assume that the Jedi wore rags when they weren't in exile?

During SW, I pretty much assumed that an assemblage of Jedi wouldn't look that much different than some of the hangar scenes.  It made sense to me that the very best warriors/pilots would become Jedi as they gained wisdom and strength in the force.  ROTJ to some extent, and then the PT, turned them all into Merlins.

I agree that in the PT-based version of Jedi knights, Wedge may not make a good Jedi.  But have a look at Dennis Lawson today, and see if you don't think that an older Wedge would make a great SW-style wise Jedi:

Saw 'Oz the great and Powerful' yesterday. Looks amazing, well acted, charming characters but the script is a train wreck. It has vast lazy plot holes that the characters actually just reference out loud!

i.e. Entire plot structure hinges on one character not talking to another at that exact moment. So the first character just says out load "Shame I don't have time to talk to her before I leave!"... cuts to leaving?!?!

Other recent huge blockbuster films like 'Star Trek Into Darkness', 'The Dark Knight Rises', 'Skyfall' and worst of all 'Iron Man 3' have similar swiss-cheese scripts. That had great drama, well written characters and snappy dialogue but with nonsense filled plots. Makes me wonder if Hollywood writers care anymore, given that ticket reciepts suggest the audience seems not to?

This trend makes me very worried for the new Star Wars films.

I haven't posted here in a while, but I thought I would put my two cents in towards the ST.  I am actually happy they are making this trilogy, as I always wanted the ST more then PT.

The ST is unpredictable and you never know where the story will be taking us, nor which characters will die, whereas the PT we essentially knew what happened and it was just a matter of how Lucas executed those plot points.

I am also happy that the ST will put an end to the propaganda that the story was always about the 'Tragedy of Darth Vader' baloney that Lucas started throwing out during the PT days.  We all knew that wasn't true and it always bothered me that my beloved SW movies were now an arc about a cold blood killer?  Sorry, that story doesn't do anything for me.

Now the story is what it originally was about, a more macro story in a galaxy far far away, set up as 3 trilogies of 3 generations of Skywalkers.

if every character is a wizard, they aren't as interesting anymore

One of the reasons why I don't watch Harry Potter ;)

Good point about Kyle Katarn - I've always felt this way. He was a mercenary, one of the many Imperials who defected and aided the good guys. I hated the beard, too ;)

It's Star Wars. There is enough space for pilots, war heros (why not spies, slicers?), commanders... just not the PT cookie-cutter clones, please (each time I see them I think not of strormtroopers but U.S.ARMY in the Middle East...). Oh, and I'll take a dollop of smugglers, pirates, mercenaries and all other scoundrels...

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

They're not going to stop with three. Star Wars is the new James Bond. It's only a matter of about 20 or 30 years before they decide to to a dark, gritty reboot of the entire franchise.

Hmm just 1-3 will suffice.

Says Lucasfilm has confirmed. Let the speculating begin I guess?

(I'd say for sure Joseph Gordon Levitt as the late twentysomething male, Charles Dance as the seventysomething male, Idris Elba as the fortysomething male, and Michael Fassbender as the thirtysomething. The younger ones I have ideas for, but probably better if they cast someone I've not yet seen.)

Interesting that the first 'leak' concerned male and female twins, but this one does not.

Young twenty-something and late twenty-something guys says to me "an attempt to recreate the dynamic between Luke and Han," but who knows? I could totally see a Luke/Biggs dynamic playing out between the two late-teens female characters (again, this is going off of nothing but an ultra-vague casting call).

Still plenty of unknown factors, though.

Lucasfilm confirmed it's real, but maybe only some (or none) of these roles are main characters.

Well there's one role on that list I could match.

The blue elephant in the room.
