At least they are trying to nail the OT look and feel.

The Falcon art is the most tangible thing we've seen! Goosebumps!

It's also good to see how collaborative this project is (or at least appears to be).

Loots of Prequel stuff on the board above that... eek.

You're right, can't imagine a PT production photo of the Director listening with rapt attention to what somebody else is saying.

I'm still hoping they pull the old models out of storage,I know they will probably make the Falcon with CGI.

But i can dream they will shoot it old school.  Don't think any such department still exists within Lucasfilm and ILM.

They could scan the original miniatures to make the CGI versions as accurate as possible?

They may be getting too fragile to undergo the rigors of FX photography now. Some of the models look worse for wear on the Blu Ray extras vs. when they were shot for the Laserdisc set. Vader's TIE looks like somebody dropped it!

^I read that line in the Anchorman style of "I'm Ron Burgundy?"

If they're including the Falcon, they should totally rebuild it with some differences to account for all those years of faithful service. Then they could build a life-sized version and after they are done filming it can be a tourist attraction.

They have reportedly already have built a life sized version. :)

Filming is supposed to start in May, so we ought to be seeing something else pretty soon.

It's pretty likely that most, if not all, of the in-flight/space shots will be done with CGI.  But the rumors of a full size MF likely means that they are really going out of their way to surround the actors with tangible sets and scenery, which is great.

90% of the character based green & blue screen used in the prequels is distractingly noticeable.  It will be nice having actors interacting with real sets.  Not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for the sake of the actors and their performances.

Scanning using the old  models/designs and updating them would also be acceptable.

No way they will look as bad as the mid 90's cgi that made its way in star wars special edition.

I think there is zero chance of anything other than cgi though since the JJ Enterprise was completely computer generated by ILM.

Only certain shots in the Next Generation films of the Ent E were of a small model.  They never built a full scale like the refit/ 1701 A.

Sorry forgot about the full model on First Contact that was great.  I think they made a full cgi one for the last movie however and it was not done by ILM.

I mean Nemesis.

I've still never bought this idea.

Do you think their performances suffered because they didn't have elaborate sets?

The wooden performances in the PT come down to how they were directed. Green/Blue screens had nothing to do with it.

Though ultimately, I do agree it would be nice to have real sets.

I meant to comment a couple pages back re: continuity.

It's my prediction that we're not gonna see any EU reboot happening, mainly because "the big three" are still alive and well in the books. Also, Luke's son is in his 20's now, pretty much perfect timing for a young actor to step into his shoes. I can understand the potential complaints of Chewie not being around, but I think that would be coming from a place of nostalgia. If anything, it might actually force Abrams and Kasdan to get more creative with writing the story.

An EU reboot would also be a huge slap in the face to all the fans who've made the company millions of dollars by continuing to buy the books. It could result in the exact kind of backlash Lucasfilm is trying to avoid.

As for Chee and Hidalgo's new task force, I think the "canon/ not canon" dichotomy will only extend to future stories, not the existing EU.

All of this continuity speculation is exactly why I hope someone out there gets their hands on the script sometime soon so we can finally know one way or the other. The script is supposed to be done by now, right? At least a first draft from what I heard.

I'ts my suspicion that they will (unfortunately) include Chewie in the sequels. If this happened, however, it would only invalidate the EU back to and including the Yuuzhan Vong war, which is when I stopped reading the EU anyway. So it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me by any means to include Chewie, and it might make more sense (from their perspective) to leave the EU accuracy vague as to what was cannon before the Yuuzhan Vong.

All they have to do is not include Mara Jade, and there goes another chunk of EU.

Well, that shouldn't be too complicated because (spoiler, I guess) she was killed off in the books.

See, this is a good example (to me, anyway) of how they could take the "constrainments" of the post-RotJ EU and use it to do something interesting. I can't help but think of JJ's Star Trek. Han Solo's relationship with his nephew could be like Christopher Pike and Kirk. Luke could be the shadowy Obi-Wan/Spock character who's out there and Ben eventually bumps into him. All I'm saying is that it makes for an interesting dynamic.

Unfortunate?! No Wookiee no sale! ;)

I don't think Peter Mayhew would have undergone that painful back surgery, and intensive physical therapy, if Chewie's return wasn't on the table.
