And Dooku is more of an independent thinker with better end goals than Maul. If you look into his character, him not aligning himself with the sith all the way to the point of having a darth title makes sense.

That is a good point. I never thought of that.

I’ve heard about these fan edits a while back, but never got around to actually watching them. Recently, I decided to go ahead and look for them, but every download link I found were either outdated versions of the film or dead. Would anyone here be kind enough to share the links to all three films for me? Thanks.

Help needed, please, you guys.

I’ve been trying everything I can think of for weeks, and when I export the day-for-night kiss by the lakeside, it looks like shit. The BluRay is an ugly transfer of an ugly film, and there just doesn’t seem to be enough data in the video stream to survive being modified this much. Padme’s skin looks like a 256 color display.
Are there any video-people out there who could convert the scene from the BluRay into a day-for-night effect? You probably have a better way of doing it than I do. I’m going to move on to exporting Episode III in the hopes that someone can help me out with this scene.
I appreciate you all, and don’t want to leave you all with a crappy final archival product.

I can see 2 options if no one knows how to help you:

  • you keep the converted HDTV footage for this scene (on an editing board I think it’s possible to mix different video sources);
  • or, you don’t add the day-for-night effet on this scene (we can assume it’s a twilight kiss).

I was working on this very thing a couple weeks ago. So I can probably help you out but it might be another couple weeks til I can get to it.

Out of curiosity, why switch to the Blu-Ray source?

Wow, that sounds great. Can you elaborate on this at all? It might sound weird, but knowing you’re tackling the same issue fills me with relief. Please keep me posted. I’m moving onto Episode III in the meantime.

The HDTV source is not as high quality, and very noisy. There are a few glitches throughout, and the only thing I really wanted from it was the color information. So it seemed like the BluRay with a few color tweaks would be the superior source to go with for the final version. Short answer: I flip-flopped.

Yeah, I probably should have said more. Basically, as you know, I’m using your edit as a base, but one of the main things I’m doing is color grading each scene. So yeah I’ve been working on the day-for-night from scratch.

Here’s a couple shots:

That should give you a rough idea of where I’m headed, with the caveat of course that these are works in progress (still a little too dark, amongst other things) and also not full quality stills at all. I’m also having a much harder time with the wider shots but I’ll get it where it needs to be (or as close as I can).

You’re making an AOTC edit with color corrected bluray ? What are you going to change compared to Hal’s version (I’m curious).

Well not a lot. My initial plan was to just make it for myself but I’ll probably end up sharing it.

But the changes are minimal, and maybe not the most popular stuff - notables being the reinsertion of the droid factory sequence, some of Jar Jar’s dialogue, the Death Star plans, the name Tyrannus - and some little trims - Obi-Wan embarrassing Anakin, changeling stuff. Weird little things I know but like I said it’s for myself, and the main reason is for the color anyway.

I will hold off a while to see how things turn out, but if worse comes to worse, I could always just use the V4 video stream and just fix the bad audio. It’s not like the BluRay is a basket of fruit either, and the day for night scene won’t be that much more jacked up than the transfer of the rest of the film.
Attack of the Clones is a very ugly film.

+1. Iv heard complaints about the day to night edit but if it makes you feel any better, my family was astounded that it was originally a day scene. They hadn’t seen the film in ages so I put on the edit without saying it was a fanedit and they were completely fooled 😉 and they actually enjoyed the movie too haha

About the changeling stuff, I’m not a big fan of the “Kamino… system…” redubbing so I’ve been toying with an idea since the release of Hal’s v4.1. I don’t intend to alter Hal’s video edit which is to my taste 99.99% as good as it can be, but I’ve made a few minor alterations to the audio track only (like removing most of Lars eulogy - leaving only the music for the wide shot -, Padmé’s complaining in the sand before a clone trooper talks to her), including the changeling scene. So I’ve put back the weird alien voice (I leave the “Kamino… system…” subtitle, assuming Obi-Wan knows a few alien languages), and then I tried to change the “toxic dart” line by “Kamino system”, taken from the deleted sequence with Mace Windu (“this kamino system”). It works good (it really seems to be synchronized to Ewan’s lips movement) but there is a slight “whistling” sound (originated from the “this” part that I’ve removed) I can’t get rid of. Reduction noise delivers a mutted metalic sound I don’t like. Any idea how to improve that ?

Another idea I’ve tried: when Padmé meets Anakin after 10 years I don’t like the “Ani !” line, so I took the “Anakin [this is my sister Sola]” from the family deleted scene to replace it; again there is a slight music in the background that I can’t hardly remove. It kinda works otherwise but I don’t think I’m really going to keep that change.

@ Hal
Sorry if it bothers you that we talk about that in your thread. Tell me if you prefer me to delete it (I just didn’t want to open a new thread for a 3 words edit 😃).

. . . the reinsertion of the droid factory sequence . . .

I’d kind of like to see this too, provided Threepio isn’t involved at all like in L8wrtr’s cut. The only thing that bugs me about this version (and I really mean the only thing) is the abruptness of the meeting with Dooku after Anakin and Padmé land on Geonosis.

Yeah that’s probably the biggest reason I’m doing my edit in the first place. And I’m 100% going the L8 approach.

I totally understand. I played around with finding a way to reinclude a shortened droid factory scene a number of times, but ended up concluding that I just loathe the sequence in just about every aspect. I felt including the scene with Dooku and wiping away to the Senate afterward worked reasonably well, because I couldn’t just have Anakin and Padme land as its own scene.

Day for night doesn’t work very well if there’s bright sunlight illuminating the background, so the best bet with this scene is probably to set it during the twilight hours. Here’s a quick mockup to show how that could look, with the open sky graded to approximate the previous dinner scene: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/183078/picture:0 There’s some artifacting and it would need to be shot by shot to account for changes in luminosity, but it could theoretically work.

Nice work but I like the implication that the two of them have a long dinner and really get to know each other.

It’s however the best Oddworld movie adaptation to date. Try to picture Abe with a lightsaber.

So I’ve just gone back and watched the edit from start to finish, and I quite like many of the choices. There are a bit more dialogue deletions than I would like, and some abrupt scene transitions. For example, I think including the droid factory scene (sans R2 and 3PO) would help ease the awkward moment where it looks like Anakin and Padme just waltz into the compound apparently expecting to talk Obi-wan out of prison. In any case, it’s a very fine edit in the spirit of the original.

As to the balcony kiss, I think it may work just fine if set at twilight, lengthened slightly, and placed directly after the meadow romp to imply that they spent a long and pleasant afternoon outside. I wouldn’t mind seeing the dinner scene go, even if we lose the setup to ‘aggressive negotiations’. There’s really no other information conveyed in that scene anyway.
