And with that, the “secret release”, a “workprint extended edition” of the film, splicing deleted scenes into the silver screen edition, will be moved to the bonus material disc 4.

I have a question about this, Darth. Is the extended cut going to include the SE Jabba, and if so, which version is going to be used for that? Also, I assume that the deleted scene of Luke and Biggs reuniting is going to be the one included on the BD bonus features rather than the SE version. I’m just curious about this stuff.

All of the deleted scenes will be the one included in the bonus disc.
As for the Jabba scene, I’m going to try and use the one from Star Wars Begins and see if it works. It supposed to be a workprint after all so the roughness won’t matter too much. But if I ultimately decide against the Star Wars Begins recreation, I’ll use a color corrected 2004 version.

I’m looking forward to it 😃

Well, I’m glad you’re using my final version so that I can watch your version without thinking “gah, but I updated that!”. 😃

Are you going to release comparison shots of the color that you changed from my version? Or just leave it for people to find? Maybe you can PM me the details if it’s the latter.

In your myspleen description, feel free to explain the difference between the 81 and 97 crawl and therefore between our two versions. Most people are probably unaware. I certainly was until a few months ago.

I’ll probably just leave it for people to find :p unless there’s a lot of people who want comparisons.
But I can PM you some shots if you’d like.

IMO, you should use '97 Jabba if you’re doing the SE version, but it’s not my project. I hope it all works out how you want it to.

I really like the idea of using the Scottish guy. But the latter part of the scene is really unusable quality. There’s TV show credits rolling down the screen at one point.

Yeah but the extended version isn’t supposed to be like a super polished version of the film anyways. It’s supposed to be a very rough edited together version for the purpose of seeing the deleted scenes in context.

Like I said, I’ll see how it works and I may very well end up using the SE version.

You could use the audio from that and the SE video.

I suppose you might be able to reconstruct it with custom mattes.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I was thinking of attempting this with custom mattes as well. This is still quite a ways down the line but once I start on the bonus material disc I’ll give it a shot and let u know how it goes.

Sorry there hasn’t been any progress on this for the last week or so guys. There have been some things going on in my personal life that have kept me busy so I’ve only been able to work on this a few minutes at a time when I have a little time to spare. Things should pick up soon.

Final render of the 1981 Re-Release version is finished and I’m currently rendering the 1977 version. In about three hours I’ll have both final versions of the film ready to bring into Encore.

I wasn’t planning on it originally, but I knew it would bother me if I didn’t, so I regraded the entirety of the Battle of Yavin sequence to drastically reduce the over-cyan tint on Despecialized. I love the tech colors, until they start to be distracting and take me out of the film, which those overemphasized cyans in the climax of the film definitely do. A few of these shots were regraded using videos posted by Mike Verta as reference, and surrounding footage was graded to match. Most of it is nothing crazy, just reducing the cyan color shift and making the image look more natural.

If I remember correctly, you used towne32’s color adjustment and then personally adjusted a few shots, right? Just another curious question, and if the latter is true, what shots are your’s?

EDIT: I didn’t think I was typing for the three minutes it would take for your post to come before mine that much earlier.

Are you using 2.6 as the base?

Cool. I considered doing similar but realized I could end up introducing more problems than I solved. So I went with using a lot of 97 ReSp shots which were a little more neutral, but not totally there. And then the most saturated were some of the ones taken care of by the SSE. But there’s definitely more that could be done, so I’ll be happy to see yours.

2.6 is the base. Here is a list of the scenes/sequences that are regraded by me.

Regraded scenes/sequences:
(completely making up scene names here but u get the gist im sure haha)

R2 and Jawas in the canyon

Inside the sandcrawler

Selling droids to Lars family

Sandpeople attack Luke/Ben’s intro

Dead Jawas - Crispy aunt and uncle

Imperial meeting (“I find your lack of faith disturbing”)

Mos Eisley entrance

A couple shots here and there inside the death star

Battle of Yavin

I wanted to try and accomplish the look I wanted purely through curves adjustments, but the grading on DeEd is just too extreme to get good results purely with that, so in the end I ended up using a combination of light curves adjustments along with saturation adjustments to certain color channels. I try not to mess around with saturation if I can avoid it, but in this instance it was the only way to get the look I wanted based partially on mvertas videos, but nonetheless I feel like I got some really pleasing results. I’ll see about posting some frames later.

Here are some frames from scenes regraded by me. There’s alot of them so I’d rather not do screenshot comparisons here. Feel free to pull up 2.5 or 2.6 on you computer and scrub to that point in the film if you want to see the difference.

Apologies if the quality of the images isn’t top notch. I just scrubbed through the movie and used the screenshot feature on my laptop.

That’s an abnormality from the color correction. However, I did fix the contrast so that on a properly calibrated monitor/tv, it should appear as black as the rest of the film. I had to drastically increase the brightness on my screen just to see it.

Is anybody else seeing a difference? It’s entirely possible my eyes or screen are to blame in which case I’ll re-encode with new black bars across the whole film just to be safe, but I’m fairly certain it shouldn’t be visible on a properly calibrated monitor.

I really like the majority of the shots!

But yes, I do sometimes see that effect. What you should do is have your project set to 1280x540 or whatever, and then render at 1280x720 to add the bars. However, often times those bars changing colors should be an indicator that your black levels might be a bit off. I noticed that in a few of your earlier samples (the Mos Eisley matte painting for example) but haven’t looked at your new ones closely yet!

edit: this is an example of the blacks being blue: http://i.imgur.com/aeMZP5y.png

It’s interesting that you seem to have taken the Tusken/Ben scene closer to Harmy’s 2.5. Is that because you used his as a basis (I used the 97SE as I think it had better color dynamics) or did you essentially revert it using mine as the base?

I like the color scheme you’re going for with the force choke scene, and the other scenes in that room. The blacks might be crushed, but I’m not comparing it to another version right now so I’m not entirely sure.

http://i.imgur.com/mBasrCE.png Kind of wish you used mine here, but we’ve already discussed this. 😛

http://i.imgur.com/n4Q4fCl.png This is a tough shot and you did a good job.

http://i.imgur.com/jFPewj7.png This looks pretty good. I struggled a bunch with that scene. Considered going back to the blu-ray as a starting point.

http://i.imgur.com/bczf7wR.png Something is wrong here. The black bars are red and so are the shadows.

http://i.imgur.com/AnKI3QF.png nice!

The battle of Yavin looks really nice and consistent. Did you use my version as a basis for the whole film from that point on?

I’d have to say that 2.6 has my vote for the Tatooine scenes, sorry Darth. All of the shadows are dark blue, and are especially weird when it’s a shadow along a warm-colored object (like sand/rocks). I also think you should definitely re-do the letter box to make sure they’re all completely black, because I sure can see blue letter boxes on some of those screenshots.

I’m re-rendering with new black bars. Also fixed a couple color issues I hadn’t previously noticed with the latter half of the artoo canyon sequence.

Oops, should’ve commented faster. 😃

Definitely check out that x-wing shot, if nothing else.
