Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions — Page 8

That's a simplistic argument to say the least. There are plenty of things in the box-set that is of great interest to OT die hards, such as the deleted scenes, better quality docus than we've previously had access to, commentaries and interviews a plenty, including a bunch of new concept art I hadn't seen before. It all happens to have been presented in a pretty lackluster way, and the set as a whole is oddly missing some of the best pieces out there, such as Empire of Dreams and From Star Wars to Jedi, just to mention two of the most obvious ones.

That the films have been scarred, yet again, is a separate matter, but even if I flinch every time a change rolls across my screen, which I do, whether you like me complaining about it or not, these are still the best copies of the films available, and as such they still have value as just that. Reference.

Perhaps it's time you quit your paradoxical complaining about our complaining?

What does that even mean in this context?

You're in a forum on a site that was created expressly to bring about the release of the unaltered original trilogy of films. I think perhaps you need to adjust your expectations, and possibly your forum conduct.

How do you respond to somebody who shells out 80$ for a video relese, knowing full well it has many problems, then takes offense to the first person who says, enjoy what you have and stop complaining.

Sorry, but you have some personal issues....

"Reference" as in "reference quality" or reference materials? Because they aren't anywhere near reference quality.

I have a pile of catalog titles on Blu-ray that were given better treatment than the OT. 7-year-old masters with fake grain don't cut it in 2011.

Detail reference. Certainly not color reference :)

And I couldn't agree more re. the image and sound quality.

Prove this. First I've heard of this accusation.

Survived the prequel extras disc last night. Most of the deleted scenes are pretty raw due to the way these films were shot. None of these were finished up like the DVD scenes were.

I had to chuckle at the revelation that Jar Jar was originally going to have a pet sidekick named "Blarf". I kid you not. Did George catch the Lost in Space movie and mercifully scuttle this idea? The world may never know!

The animatics for Episode III are interesting. The extended escape from Grevious' ship had some nice walking on the walls as the gravity shifted. I don't think Artoo actually saving Palpatine from falling would have played very well though.

The Spielberg created Utapau chase animatic is almost Monty Python in the sheer number of clones being run over. Obi Wan actually knocks several of his own troops off riding that lizard. At one point, Grevious is grinding the wheel of his vehicle and clone body parts are flying everwhere. (I don't know if this is supposed to be clones getting maimed or they didn't have a shape for random debris.) Obi Wan pulls a couple Indiana Jones type maneuvers along the way.

Obi Wan killing Grevious is much more grisly here. I had no idea Steven was a gore fiend. ;)

Also of note is the General appears to have Darth Maul eyes here.

The Kashyyk battle animatic has some cool bits I wish they had actually shot. I almost prefer the intercutting of Yoda reacting to all the Jedi deaths to the final version.

Oh yeah! Forgot about him...

Watched Episode III with the archival commentary, and there are some really weird issues with shimmering, almost snowy grain infesting certain shots. Only certain parts of the image are affected though. The topper is white speckles on the Emperor's hood in the final scene!

I'm going to have to try watching on another player this week to figure out what the heck is going on. Haven't had this crop up with any other Blu Ray I've watched to date though...

I gotta say, ripping out Greivous's chest-brain thing, throwing it on the ground, then shooting it seemed a little un-Jedi.

This.

Grevious was supposed to be like darth vader, only he was so f'd up that he was more droid and the droid body kept him alive. GL and co. didn't want him to be exactly like Darth Vader, but somewhat like him. I guess they ran out of ideas for a new villian.

And Stephen Speilberg did a lot of constructive critiscizm to GL, "" His ideas were a little weird.

The deleted PT scenes weren't that interesting since most of it was Computer generated and unfinished.

I have to say my biggest disappointment in this entire bluray set is the bloody arm in the cantina... I'm glad the claw thing is gone from the 2004 version... but why couldn't they fix this one little shot for continuity?

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

i thought the same thing. GL even said that a ligthsaber seals a wound and doesn't cause bleeding. It was one little thing they could've fixed.

On the list of things that 'need' changing, I see that as being way down there. Let's start with fixing lightsabers across the board. If they can't do that; I think a reshoot is asking a bit much.

a reshoot of that single shot is going to be way easier than fixing lightsabers.

The lightsabers are embeded in the very first layer of the prints that they are working with. Shadows and reflections have been added, and anywhere there is a larger-than average lightsaber shot, all of the picture data behind it has been lost, meaning that a LOT has to be restored, fixed, and reinserted. Plus, you have to do that with high speed sequences where each frame is different from the last.

This is a single shot of an arm... and considering that lightsabers, while being a bit off color and shape, continue to act in a manner expected of lightsabers... I personally feel that the continuity issue with a bleeding arm is the larger, and easier to fix, issue.

Sorry if that came out a bit strong... for some reason, my marathon of the blurays has stuttered ever since seeing that shot...

If it's a matter of making some sort of time-warp retro-active tradeoffs, I'd like to use the Greedo shot first scene(s) and the Jabba deleted scene(s) as well as one instance of an R2 unit and a couple of NOooooo's as currency to buy new lightsabers all around ^_^

Well I checked Episode III out in another player, and the mystery snow/grain is still there in all the same places.

I can only speculate at this point somebody attempted to apply artificial film grain, and frakked it up totally. :(

How does crap like this pass quality control?

If anyone has the ability to take screencaps so you can all see what I'm talking about, it would be very much appreciated. I don't have a Blu Ray drive for the PC yet.

I need to dig my DVD out and see if this stuff is visible, although I'm betting it isn't...
