Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions — Page 14

Yes, Extended. I admit that I did not, myself, watch the dvd and bluray versions side by side, but from what I remember of comparisons, it's definitely not a constant tint application. Certain scenes were greener, the mountain pass with Boromir was noticeably blue, etc. It was quite deliberate, just as it had been throughout the trilogy. I expect it will be in The Hobbit just as much as it was in LOTR - The only difference is that there won't be a differently colored version of the first Hobbit film in existence.

The Star Wars blu-ray was just called 'high definition sadness' on the Big Bang Theory.

and a second joke about starting to watch the movie before George changes it again.   and a third joke that their conversation is better then the blu-ray.

Now I have 3 reasons to like this show:

- Penny

- The techy references

- These quotes bagging the BD release

It's a pity that we've gone from having playful parodies of the characters on various shows over the years, to instead having cutting jokes aimed negatively at the quality of presentation and meddling nowadays...

Says a lot George...

Very witty show though, whenever I've caught it.

I just posted a comparison in my ESB:R thread of a shot of the Hoth battle between the blu-ray and a 35mm cell scan from the original theatrical version.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/93945

The blu-ray is just one smudged mess. Anyone that thinks the blu-rays are top quality and that a scan from the theatrical version could never look as good really need to think again.

Wow. Glad I've been buying these loose and on the cheap!

Does the packaging have credits for those who should be blamed? ;)

Where were you in '77?

I caught those Star Wars references on The Big Bang Theory too. Hilarious, and sad too. It does indeed say alot about Lucas that even popular sitcoms are taking digs at the quality of the blu-rays and the tampering of the films.

Was able to check out the extras on the blu-ray, some nice little things scattered throughout the classic films material here and there, but as expected what an incredible package of revisionism, whenever someone talks about how they made the effects or display where they used matte paintings etc, they almost always end it by showing a clip of effects made in '97 or '04, I understand they don't have the original video material scanned in any high quality but come on, this is a fucking joke, the extra material on this box should instead have been the computer nerds talking about how they altered and how they updating these classic films for every release.

Talk about younger generations getting a wrong picture on how visual effects looked in the 70's or early '80's. This is almost getting me more upset than the actual suppression of the original films, you have all these old fine talented ILM'ers sitting and talking about how they manage to create these shots and then they show clips often created by someone else in 1997 or 2004. Respect.

Even used, I would never buy this ridiculous Happy Meal set.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Great news! At least these blu-rays have the reputation they deserve, so our efforts haven't been for naught.

I STILL have not bought them, nor rented them, and even my desire to rent them gets smaller and smaller as the days go by.

BTW, how 'bout "Occupy Skywalker Ranch"? ;-)

I have gotten over my rage at these pieces of shit quite quickly. I don't even feel regret over the poor quality anymore.

Of course, I never bought them...

Maybe one day I'll borrow them from a friend, but I don't have any friends who have them!

I only got the OT box for cheap from a friend who bought it and then got the saga box for his b-day and that only not to have to resort to piracy  - well morally anyway - to watch some HD fan versions and use it for mine. LOL, actually, if I didn't get the Blus, even though I wasn't going to use them for Despecialized at first, I would still have gotten into a strange situation where I would be breaking the new forum rules by watching my own HDTV based edits :-)

Anyway, at first, I kind of regretted not having the bonus discs but I borrowed them from the friend and only watched the deleted scenes (including the prequel deleted scenes - that was a laugh) and looked through the matte paintings to see if there was anything I could use in there and I wasn't really interested in the rest, which I've either already seen or was crap.

I thought about renting them, basically just to see R2's rocks and Vader's new "NOOOOO!" firsthand, but I really don't want to give Lucasfilm the wrong impression by paying any money, however little it may be, to see these.

I'm mildly interested in gawking at the train wreck and then moving on, but as time goes by I find myself caring less and less.

I haven't even watched them (I did of course skim through but I didn't watch the whole films) and actually don't ever really plan to. I  don't see any reason to expose myself to the horror :-) The only thing I'm mildly interested in are the new cut-together commentaries but I think I'll just demux and roughly sync those to some of the 97SE broadcasts and watch that on my phone or something.

I've gotten over the stuff that disappointed me. I still like having the Blu-rays, but it doesn't really matter to me that much, as long as there are other versions and preservations out there.

The Blu-rays did trigger my acquisition of a Pioneer CLD-S315, though. So far, I've watched the 97SE version of "Star Wars" and a somewhat worn Faces-version of "The Empire Strikes Back" on it. I'm gonna need to get some mint copies of the Faces-discs. I'm blown away by the quality of the discs so far, though. The 97SE one, in particular, looked really good. And that's just on an entry-level player!
