Shatner on SW vs. ST

The one thing I really agree with Shatner on, is that in most of the original series episodes the crew was faced with an ethical dilemma. Often the dilemma didn't have an easy answer, or it wasn't always clear what was the right thing to do. They always made you think about what you would do in a similar situation. In Star Wars, there's a good guy and a bad guy, and you root for the good guy. Trek was more "intelligent" in that respect.

That was what often disappointed me about the later series'.  They tended to not incorporate such ethical dilemmas that seemed the cornerstone of the original series.

What a load of old bollocks. I did enjoy a lot of the original show and some of the movies but a lot of the time Star Trek is a bunch of people sitting in a room talking.

Ok, this is just stupid.

Is he talking about the prequels now or the original movies? HE DOESN'T CONFUSE THE TWO I HOPE??

Yea, where Star Trek had thought experiments and "humanity" (as corny as it sometimes may have gotten - look up TV Tropes "you fail logic forever"), Star Wars mostly had mythical escapism, but calling it "little more than special effects"?
The original movies hinged upon the humanity of their main characters - sorry, that's just silly.

Then he mentions Abrams' movie... okay... that one had cool SEs, but it sacrificed some of the "story" quality, didn't it? It belongs to the same franchise, but was much more like SW except probably more shallow.

The Shat should listen to some Plinkett - his thoughts on this aren't organized at all.

Puggo the only Star Trek that fits that mold of "They tended to not incorporate such ethical dilemmas that seemed the cornerstone of the original series."

Is JJ Abrams Star Trek 2009.

All the TV series dealt with issues, yes even enterprise and Voyager.  The best shows after the original being next generation and deep space nine.

Skyjedi - I respectfully disagree.

The rest of you seem a little humor-impaired.  Isn't it obvious that most of the time Shatner is joking?  Or at least engaging in hyperbole just to be fun?  A lot of the time he's struggling to keep a straight face.  There's nothing to be so sensitive or offended about.

Shatner does enjoy trolling the trekkies, he has been doing it for a long time.

He does not see star trek as sacred anymore than Roddenberry both were in it to make money.

Its cultural icon status is firmly outside of the workaday world of television and film production.

Its beyond some people that they do it to earn a living and as a job.

Star Trek and Star Wars have been creepily elevated to quasi religious or cult status.

I never did really pay attention to behind the scenes commentary stuff from Star Trek actors. Clicked myself through quite a bit of Shatner stuff going from the one you posted originally.

To be honest I always prejudiced William Shatner to be a douche. After seeing what a great sense of humor he displays and how he is able to not take himself all too serious, I stand corrected. Actually got to like the guy quite a bit.

Especially after seeing this. ^_^
