If the print had a pink colour shift, colour-correcting it might have made the whites slightly creamy/yellowish. Or they're just faded...

Well now, that's the trick, isn't it?  How do you know what it is supposed to be?  I did do quite a bit of color correction on the PG, but without a reliable reference source, it really comes down to a judgement call.  Also, there is only so much color correction you can do before it starts cutting into detail and making the faces look sickly.

I sent Timdiggerm a PM, asking if it was a weaker yellow, like straw or cream, or a brighter, bolder yellow. This is what he said:

"Well, they were yellow. I'd say it was a fairly strong yellow, yes. Black border, of course. But no, I can't confirm this with photos, though I wish I could."

I have followed up with this, but I thought this was extremely interesting.

Puggo, can you post a pics of the raw, uncorrected caps of the scenes? Do you still have them?

Yes of course I still have the raw captures.  I'll try to grab a Greedo frame some time this week.

Randomly, I did come across this on Youtube.

Did anyone here make it? I actually found it pretty neat, although once again they put the blame on Lowry, when it was Lucas who personally fucked up the picture himself. Strangely they quote my site, which I thought pointed out this misconception.

So, following up on this I asked Tim if he was sure, and if he could ask his friend to confirm it. I also have a vague memory of seeing yellow subs on video, I want to say the SE VHS, but I know Dark_Jedi's first release had yellow subs too, so I wanted to be sure he wasn't just remembering some other release. He did start to say he wasn't 100% sure now if the Baltimore print was yellow, but maybe just because I am putting doubt in his mind.

"Well, it's what I remember seeing, yeah. I haven't actually seen any of the various restorations and fanedits other than Ady's ANHR, so if it came from there, it came from screenshots (which means it could have come from screenshots, yes). I'll ask my friend, but I don't know that he'll remember.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I'm not 100% sure, but it's what I remember."

So, I dunno, perhaps less airtight than we thought on second glance, but definitely not something to write off. The story continues...

Thanks for following up on this, zombie. This was posted recently in d_j thread. :)

Concerning subtitles:

I just got an email reply from my friend who was with me at the Star Wars screening at The Senator in Baltimore. He actually has video of the Greedo scene (he'll probably post that online soon), but he confirms that the subtitles are white, not yellow as I remembered.

Yeah just saw that too. All that hubub! Good thing his friend was there, with a video camera too. Its amazing how screwy peoples memories are, eh? No wonder there are so many people who saw Biggs! :p

Yeah ;)

It's great that he had a video camera, damn I would love to see the binary sunset scene filmed by someone... it's weird that no more footage has surfaced of this screening.

Maybe his buddy did have a picture. I mean he took a shot of the Luke closeup there. Maybe he has one of the longshot too. Even it was a big blurry you might be able to see what the levels and grading are like.

Yeah, you are right. I will definitely contact him.

Thanks, I enjoyed that. I remember too reading that Lucas supervised the different color palette though, as you said.

Regarding the yellow subs issue I can remember yellow subs in a video release or taped off television broadcast video I used to watch. But memory is a funny thing. Maybe it's a PAL thing as I'm Australian and have only ever seen a PAL release.

I have no way to verify this because I really couldn't be bothered to get out the vcr to check and the only videos I have that are still in working order are the 97 SE's.

Yes, I'm fairly sure that the ITV broadcast had yellow subtitles. Obviously not theatrical, because they had been reformatted to fit a pan & scanned screen.

So, Fox is putting out a 75th anniversary chronological box set of the studio's key movies. With the 2004 version of Star Wars in the 1977 slot.

 (Edited)

That video is proof beyond a doubt of Lucas destruction of star wars with the 2004 set.  Even with the bad changes and cgi at least they got the soundtrack and color timing right in 1997.

Me personally i will only ever watch the original versions and every now and again i might want to watch the 1997 version to recall my senior year in High School, but the 2004 set is just a bad video edit, Lucas personal fanedit.

It would have been nice to see the original intended re-release with cleaned up soundtrack, picture and opticals, but with no added cgi.

You know what, I don't think SW will be saved. We lost, and cannot admit it.

LOL I know that. I wasn't being histrionic with that comment.

I'm addressing the people who are under the collective delusion that someday in the future the OOT will come back remastered and rehabilitated, maybe around the time of GL's death. I'm sorry to say it, but SW is dead, man; cold and dead in the ground. Sorry you are all in denial about the destruction of our beloved movies. The only thing we can possibly do is indict GL for the crime he has committed.
