An idea that has absolutely no pay off.

BTW, did I mention how FUGLY they are?

Do people honestly think George Lucas puts any thought into continuity with the EU when he writes this stuff? He doesn't even maintain continuity between movies ffs!

The extent of his thinking is "hmmm what made the originals popular? Well people liked the ships. Yeah let's just copy that"

Also I bet that EU thing only came up afterwards to explain George's illogical decision, but I could be wrong.

I have no problem with the ships as two seater fighters sharing some of the characteristics of the X-Wing it makes design sense (you see similar features in fighter variants in the real world and some of those look pretty odd).

Retrospectively I would like to have seen the pristine Y-Wings filling that role (something they would later do in The Clone Wars series) and have pristine X-Wings in the service of the Republic.

It just seems odd that we never saw any of those ships run down and being re-used by the Rebels but we do see ships that must have been top of the range vessels of the same time period but never in their original context during the events of the PT.

The Y-Wings replacing the 'Ug-Wings' would have been bearable. There's even a variant of the YWing in the Clone Wars series which has a gunner pod behind the cockpit and all its panels intact.

But the fact they have split wings and are red and white is meant to suggest it's a predecessor of the X-Wing. Which makes no sense.

The Ywings would make a bit more sense as in ANH they're beaten up and don't make up the main bulk of the ships. Suggests they've been salvaged.

But my main complaint about the ARC-170 is that it's just hideous!!!!

I didn't see them as a predecessor but more a variant sharing some features, the B-Wing also has S-Foils but has different features so I don't have a problem with the same designers coming up with a two seater fighter.

I does seem like a missed opportunity though.

If someone could build a nice new looking set of OT Rebel fighters and add them into the mix it would aid the sweep of the saga if the Rebels are seen fighting with patched up ships which were once top of the line Republic vessels during the PT.

In fact I wouldn't be offended to see the 'Ug-Wings' all beaten up and added to a ROTJ edit in the same way.

Bob have you considered OTrizing the Tantive cockpit? I think that the one of the transport we first see in TPM (where Obi Wan and Qui Gonn arrive to the Fed Ship) could do. It's complete, and even more extense that the Lambda shuttle's from ROTJ; however, it still has that thing that makes it OTish...

Retroing some stuff...

A couple questions; What to do about the light emanating from the planet that is cast on the actors / cockpit? Leave it as is or does the whole cockpit have to be darkened to accommodate the new shot out the window? And how fast should the stars come at us? Just wondering.

Mithrandir Suggested that the window should have stars instead of the planet, recreating Luke's landing to dagobah. I like the idea and even we can change the corvette's flyby to a more distant one again mirroring ESB's luke approaching bespin. A small ship reaching a bright star.
The last shot of the corvette heading to the senate...well i have some surprises if all work together for that shot

Is it possible to get the cockpit more retro? i really, REALLY, like where your taking this Angel but it (imo) is still too clean. And how about sinking that center screen with the audio signal into the console a couple more inches while having a protective piece of glass on the top? Or maybe a monitor that is more bulbous in shape like old tube style televisions

I like the idea of sinking the screen inside that border. Hopefully the monitor is visible only in two shots so it wouldn't be difficult keeping the continuity. As for the rest of the monitors that are around the actors im really tempted to replace them with blinking old buttons . Since all the shots are still the only hard part will be roto out the plates.

Thank Zod these shots are static and the plates will be easy to be created and replaced with some roto.

Who needs landing strips (the most lame Visual joke in PT)

I always hated that bit with the Emperor's assistant on the screen, not so much for the look as for the random-ass "beep" that happens after his last line...but there's also a weird gap between the line and the beep.  It bothers me to no end and I can't even explain why. :-/

I really like the idea of sinking the screens, mostly because it mirrors reality about TV history. 40's screens were like that, while by the seventies (OT) the screens were just as seen in the OT, so technological "evolution" within the saga matches the real technological line. If retroing the cockpit was a goal, this last mock up by Angel's a mid-field goal ala Messi (??).

I like it that at some point technology in the OT looks more advanced than in the PT, like in the case of technicolor (?) holograms, we have them in the OT, but not in the PT.

Having a wave and not a video gives you the chance of redubbing the message. I suggested Angel having lots of StarDestroyers patroling over Coruscant, and perhaps an Imperial StarDestroyer (just one) which would be like twice the "old" venators size. It would be like the Empire's "new toy". Make the message say something kinda:

"The chancellor's waiting blah blah... state of siege has been declared (as it happens when most of coup d'etat take place)

So then have the SDs re-accomodate so as to let the Tantive get through. This will ironically mirror the fact that an hour later in the saga (the beggining of ANH) something's changed and the same ship is being persecuted.

Good idea!

Since the only SDs which are coloured are ROTS's, I had this idea of making them as gray as the others, just to match the rest of the saga. Make all gray, but one, u know; though I don't know which... If the chancellor's SD (the first we see in the movie would remain the only red stripped SD like making it have some distinction ala Air Force One), or Kenobi's in Utapau; as if Obi Wan was some elite-like military force; so as to match the image we've got of him in ANH (even Tarkin knows Obi Wan Kenobi).

Bob, I was thinking about the way that Palpatine looks older in AOTC than he does in ROTS. Do you think it would be possible to make him more pale in ROTS (via color correction), to make up for this?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I would do the opposite, have him re-coloured in AotC to make him look healthy

I think the original intension was to have Palpatine slowly progress to the ROTJ look but then George had another panic attack about the general stupidity he perceives in all people.

As BarBar mentioned. I would edit the footage from AOTC to make him appear younger. It's amazing what alittle color tone and the remove grain tool in AE can do for things like this.

Looks pretty awesome to me!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Quick question, have you thought about adding large amount of sparks when the clone troopers are shot. I was just watching ESB and every time the stormtroopers are hit, a huge stream of sparks shoot out. Something to consider.

As far as I can recall the only trooper hit that had a huge spark effect was when Leia gets a direct hit on Cloud City.

The rest of the time there is usually just bit of a flame or a spark or nothing at all.

Bob, nice job on de-aging Palpatine in the AOTC clip! Thanks for sharing.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Just wanted to say I love the freakin' retro-ization of the PT ships Vaderios' has come up with! As well as removing the landing strips, it's more reminiscent of the beautiful scenery I remember from the first film.

Im afraid the scenery doesnt match with TMP and in AOTC the scenery is lame like trees made of plasteline...

I hope we can find more retro ideas along these pages :)

Check it again, there are quite a few. This is a non jerk response, sorry if it sounds like I am being one.

No Jerk markers detected over here :-D

I well aware that "the memory cheats" which is why I prefaced my post with "As far as I can recall".
