Absolutely love the new clip.  I just would like to say kudos to you Ady.  I would get so frustrated with everyone telling me that the lightsaber should be 4 frames instead of 6, etc.  I'd be like "I worked hard on this and I'm not gonna change it dammit!!"  Haha.

Keep up the good work and hopefully things go well with the project.  I'd love to see a May 2012 release!

Here's something I noticed:

at the 0:38 to 0:40 mark of the XMAS CLIP, the glowing mark Vader leaves should be at a different angle.  In the far off shot, Vader's blade is swinging to the left and slightly up (at a positive 5 to 10 degree arc).  In the following close-up, the cut in the wall is going upwards to the left in a postive 45 degree angle:

Also, shouldn't the rail only have one cut in it, as opposed to two (since Vader only hits it once)?

arrow shows downward arc of Vader's sabre when he hits the rail once.

This is the actual impact with the Vane wall.

red area shows spot where Vader's sabre should have left a mark, and the arrow is pointing to a second cut in the rail when there should only be one. You know, maybe that entire T section on the rail (formed by the 2 small cut out areas) should be gone, with more of the orange heat glow, considering the angle of Vader's sabre hitting it, and that his sabre may have done more damage than make a slight cut in the rail.

Here is an example:

The cut in the railing is a bit bigger to account for the width of Vader's blade.  The cut on the wall matches the angle of Vader's blade impact.

I also concur that the sabre seems a bit slow in retraction... maybe someone could make a Youtube clip with a montage of sabre retractions so we can determine the timing (or would that be too anal even for a STAR WARS fan... up to the challenge, ImpFighter?)?

Once again, you can right click to see them in their original, larger size.

BTW, nice addition of smoke on the cut railing...

I don't think there are two cuts monroeville, just where the rail ends and then begins again, and ONE cut.
Yes, each section of the railing is a separate piece.

And Ady, maybe we should have ImpFight go through the movie and do the text commentary on the Visual Comparison, eh? ;-)

Even better, a text commentary of his text commentary.

But the cut Vader's sabre makes in the railing is the exact same size as the supposedly pre-cut railing right beside it... I suspect it just may be a continuity error on the FX guys (besides, why would the railing be cut and open like that?  Are there any other shots to confirm that the railing has open spots along it?).

Yes, the same shot you drew on, upper right of the frame. You can tell the railings are separate pieces.

If you're talking about the area to the right of Luke's head, I can't exactly tell.  There is a white line, but I can't tell if that is supposed to be an opening.

Regardless, it still doesn't take into account the arc of Vader's swing hitting the vertical part of the guard rail, as well as the backswing hit on the wall.

As 005 stated, the rails are split into sections. you can see this clearly in other shots of the gantry. Your interpretation of where the saber slashes is incorrect. You seem to have based it on the whole blade of the saber slicing the wall when in fact only the tip would have made contact with it with the angle of Vader's swing, so my placement is correct. I went through it frame by frame to get the placement correct. Plus, since that clip was originally rendered months ago, i had finished the rotoscoping of the sabers as these weren't 100% completed at the time. The blade was made slightly longer because it doesn't even come in contact with the wall, so this was fixed plus you can see when the saber slices through the rail its on the wrng side of the rail instead of slicing through it.  But even with the blade its original length it doesn't cut anywhere near the door entrance edge

At this point, it seems silly to even question Ady's fixes & adjustments. Pointing out things that he & his mates may not have noticed or got to yet is definatly a good idea (although I doubt there is anything they have not yet noticed lol, you guys have pointed out & fixed sooo many things I've never seen & I have seen this movie 100s of times lol) But judging by the massive amount of work put in here & the frame by frame scanning Im sure they've got it under control!

(Man, I cant wait to watch this guys!!! My favorite movie of all time. We need to rent out a movie theater & all go and watch it together LOL.)

For the new tip i took a photograph of the replica Vader hilt i have in the correct position it should be and rotoscoped that in.

That's just awesome. This is why I love this edit so much.

As both a teacher and a writer, I can tell you that this is a terrible outlook indeed.

I take it you didn't look at either the MISSING RED VENTS or YELLOWISH LIGHTS AND MISSING TUBING 'links' in my long post yesterday then Monroville?...as they included various shot examples which show the various 'gaps' all along the railings...

As far as the speed of the 'retraction', I'm already pleased with it, and personally don't have any problem with it (so that's a 'no' on the 'montage' thing, lol)...and I reckon the final sound effect that is still to accompany it will sell it perfectly.  It was only the 'hilt's end that I preferred a slightly more 'stylistic' angle of, for the 'close-up' (like the original)...as it seems to me that the angle it's held at in Vader's hands leading up to that point, is kinda slightly inconsistent anyway.  No biggie though.

Heh, you're not getting out of it *that* easy!  I wouldn't blame you for trying, as there's just so many enhancements in certain individual shots alone on this one...which is great of course.  You'll need a gazzillion 'arrows' in some of them!

IF text commentary only if it was edited to stay in real time with the film.  The way IF writes, we'd be in the middle of Dagobah and he'd still be talking about the probe droid shots.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

There is a mask error on the tube on the top right corner(triangular shape) in your pic.

Amazing job on this one, good riddance matte lines :D

It's ok, it's after effects being a shit. There isn't even a mask created in that area, especially that shape so i don't know how that section is missing. It's only on that screengrab on that one frame, but i'm pretty sure it's not in the full render. I'm having all sorts of hell with after effects recently, so i'm usually having to render everything a few times. I need to wipe the drive and reinstall everything soon, but i'm trying to put it off until i've finished ESB:R

I use a program called DeepFreeze to avoid having to do frequent reinstallations. Locks up your computer so that nothing can be saved or altered unless you do a lengthy unlocking process which requies a restart. You get everything set the way you want it, then you lock DeepFreeze, and you can go for years.....you could even intentionally download the nastiest viruses, but as soon as you reboot everything is back to the way it was when you locked DeepFreeze.

This is true. I did some work installing it on a bunch of college dorm computers.

Meant to add that it also freezes your program preferences and settings...

Ady, what was it about old background design in that shot you didn't like? Now I'm not talking about the quality of it, I'm talking about the design.

EDIT: And because of the change, are you going to apply the new design to all the other shots?
