The Executor is probably one of my favourite elements from the movie. Based on his previous work, as long as Adywan doesn't change it into a giant slice of pizza I don't think we need to worry. But I'm seemingly not as discerning as a lot of people on this board (I'm a long time lurker. Hi).

Guys (specifically ABD): the whole point to making suggestions is "to make suggestions".

There is no rule that says you cant make suggestions, and there is certainly no rule that says I cant respond to them.

You could always make a video mock-up for your suggestions, it works a whole lot better than a still does in some cases. Your a very talented guy. Show ady what you can do, and he could very well ask you to do some work on ROTJ:Revisited.

Dude! Awesome! Almost like the theatrical version, but with more detail!

Is that a joke?

Ady's quite awesome at what he does, but let's not forget the vast, vast majority of what you're going to see in ESB:R isn't his work. Colour timing and new FX etc, sure, and I'm 100% certain it will be gorgeous, but please, he's not reinventing the Star Wars wheel. He isn't adding any detail whatsoever to shots like this, all he can do is bring out what was already there.

He obviously meant that the Revisited shot has the atmosphere of GOUT, but the clarity of HD. Best of both worlds.

Yet I insist, from my point of view the falcon should be darkened. Just like in the GOUT version

The GOUT is not a good example of what the OT really looked like in the cinemas. It's derived from a 720 X 480 non anamorphic master made in 1993 for the now extinct Laser Disc format, and suffers from 8 bit color depth.

But the colour timing is closer to the theatrical presentation, no? It wasn't retimed or anything at that point, or am I confused?

The 1993 masters where color timed. They where THX certified, and the main problem with those is the Digital Video Noise Reduction Lucasfilm used at the time.  The pre THX Laser disc versions are closer to the theatrical as far as color is concerned IMO.

Because the OT wasn't HD...

Why are you being so difficult? It's clear what he meant to everyone but you. He was talking about GOUT, as in the crappy, blurry transfer of the OT included with the Special Edition DVDs. The version that inspired the creation of this webforum.

Thats more like it ady ;) I see you used glow from AE filter? I like that we see for the first time glow from a metal surface in a space shot in OT :D (nose of the executor)

I stand corrected :D

No, it wasn't.  It was 35mm film.  Only Episode II and Episode III are HD.

But yeah, the OT, in its original form, has more than enough detail for HD, and would look even better than Episodes II and III.

But we don't have the OT in HD.  We have the 2004 SE in HD.  We have the OT in letterboxed SD.

What he was saying is that it has more detail than the letterboxed SD OT that we do have.  Which is true.

Ady I think (not sure) you mentioned that you will reuse the same shot that piet says "yes my lord" in the tractor beam shot because when Piet says for the first time Yes my lord its from an other shot and the officers and the BG is not match.

So i have to ask if this is true. Logically you will replace the background from vader too in the close ups because its the same/flipped from the hoth scenes

Also when piet later says "alert all commands" will you replace its BG to be next to vader because he clearly talking to the crew in the pit of the bridge?

Its pitty tho that the officers are from needa's SD. i remember 005 brillianty discovered the patterns of the pits between the SDs and the Executor.

What are your plans about shot reuses and BG replacements?

16mm is certainly capable of producing a good scan at HD resolution.  35mm, the native res of Star Wars, is even more capable of it.

That's exactly what I meant.

What I find most interesting about the SD pits now is that the mirrored side was recomped in the SE and has a different timing than the original, at least in the last shot of the whole bridge.

Which leads me to this shot:

Is this amalgamation still in ESB:R?

Children in the backseat of a car can cause accidents, but accidents in the backseat of a car can cause children.

An idea that I can see being extraneous, but an idea none the less:

Seeing that bridge shot from 005 got me thinking again about a particular aspect of the front of the bridge... it looks like there is a hole or extension above Vader that may extend 12 inchs or more above the regular roof of the bridge.

While I can understand if there weren't viewscreens up front (as depicted), what if some slight light effects were employed to emphasize that open area, which in turn could help give the shot some dimensionality:

Well, even considering it'd be a radical change (or at least some people would consider it to be so), perhaps it could be subtle to add some more detail in red in those areas...not viewscreens but shcematics screens (OT-like)... for an idea check out this video from bob garcia's edit (it's PT BTW, though it's enough to illustrate) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkmTYfPaaiA

Washed/Monochromatic = OT

Extreme amounts of colour= PT

Monochromatic+colourful details= OT Revisited???

BTW Ady, watching this scene some thoughts came to my mind, and I gotta say I'm thankful that, at some point you're eventually removing the scene of Anakin getting the suit... wtf would Vader be staring at while he looks the spacial landscape (as he does practically all over ESB), if he can't see a thing with that mask?

Author
Time

Why? Why do we need to draw the viewers eye up to a meaningless area of the bridge and away from what's important?

Author
Time

Not to mention the fact that adding that lighting effect would mean it would need to be added to every shot of the bridge, not only in this film but in ROTJ:R as well.  Too much work to solve a problem that didn't exist in the first place.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.
