Awesome. Looks like the bottom one is the picture they inserted into the matte.
Good eye there mate.
Thanks. You know, if the transport profile in the bottom picture is bigger than the one in the matte, it would be a better source for the edit...

Have you a word to describe what means "matte" painting? There's no translation in french for it.

Matte = non reflective, eg: paint comes in gloss, semi-gloss & matte.

Wiki:

matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to build or visit. Historically, matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte-painted image with live-action footage. At its best, depending on the skill levels of the artists and technicians, the effect is "seamless" and creates environments that would otherwise be impossible to film.

en français on dit "peinture sur verre" c'est plus descriptif ; )

Google translate:

in French we say "painting on glass" is more descriptive;)

Apparently the winky* knows no language boundaries.

As another example:

Cloud City matte

The original Cloud City matte painting. The white area was where the live-action element was inserted.

^ Errr... Thanks a lot. It was only the "matte" word that I was not familiar with ! ;)

The reason they became known as "matte" paintings is because one of the ways to frame a picture you hang on your wall is to use a matte - a colored piece of cardboard that surrounds the picture that allows you to put a smaller picture into a larger frame instead of putting it in a frame the exact size of the picture.  The FX paintings became known as "matte" paintings because they work the same way - surrounding the filmed element to create the illusion that the total image is bigger than what was on the original film.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

So both savmagoett and ABC are french?
Peut-être que nous trois peuvent aider Ady à faire un nouveau version du film, complètement en français? :p

Wow Ziz, thanks for the info :)

Je crois que le mot "matte" en anglais signifie un cache en français (I think the word matte means "un cache" in French).

And Ady, I was just wondering: how did you manage to tone down the horrible glow of the sabres and to retain the original detail of the image in the overhead shot of Luke VS Vader fighting on the gantry?

Author
Time

Yeah, I was wondering that too. It seems like you have to delete the original sabres before you rotoscope the new ones in some shots.

Also, it seems my previous question got lost in a lot of off topic rubbish, and as I'm very interested to learn, here goes again:

Harmy said:

Ady, I'm personally very interested in what kind of equipment will be used to shoot the new models, life action extras and such. Will you be renting real studio equipment and a professional HD camera?

Bewy too? Now that there's four of us, how about some cards? :p

Good point, Harmy, I'm interested in knowing too.
Damn curious me, it always gets the best of... well, me! ;)

Although personally, I think it's probably equipment he owns himself, no?
It would require a rather large, continuous money flow to rent it, which otherwise could be spent on the OT:R and PT:R projects themselves.

Well, it's actually not that expensive to rent that stuff and if he had everything ready and tested, he might need to rent it for just a few days.

EDIT: OK, I just checked, it actually is pretty expensive... Around £300 per day for HD :-(

Thanks Ziz and Bewy, that replies a lot more to my wonderings.

... Hahem... With a french like this you'll only make the frame spottings... haha!

Besides, I don't watch SW in french. But funny thing, did you ever notice: le gars qui double Darth Vader est celui qui fait la voix de GrosMinet !!!...

...

I'm saying the french dub for Darth Vader is the same voice than for...

Sylvester !!!

This may sound nit-picky or it has already been covered, but there are far too many pages to read up on to see if anyone has brought it up.

Even as a child and watching Empire, when Luke is hanging from Bespin theres a serious sunset going on, but when Lando retrieves him there is far too much daylight in the scene.

I'm sure that Ady is going to relight this scene as best he can. Continuity, my friends, is the goal.

Really? I'm french and I never noticed... That's pretty epic!

I think however it would be cool if ESB's french dubbing had some revisiting of its own just for Vader's sake, it's kinda dumb when a character has three different voices in the same movie.

Yes that's how many voices French Vader has currently in ESB : the original one, the "Alert my Star Destroyer" of the SE and the new dialog with the Emperor from the DVD.

I'll what? Seriously, you lost me there.
I refuse to watch anything not played in its original language, so I never watch dubbed films. It makes me puke... almost.

Wow, that's pretty bad. Though I'm still unsure that all of those are James Earl Jones in the English version!
