Nice clip, GM. I don't know if this has been suggested before, but why not use Ian's voice from the Musical Journey DVD? He says "Luke" quite a few times, if I can remember.

EDIT: Is it me, or is the Emperor's voice way too clear? To me, it seems like there should be at least some sound distortion in the hologram.

I kinda like this edit... I'll explain more when people see/comment...

It's very nice, but you can tell that the line "He could destroy us" was taken from later in the conversation because the Emperor's voice slightly changes. Same with Vader's "He's just a boy" line, it has a slightly but noticeably different tone than the line before it. Other than that, I really like your version, especially how Palpy interrupts Vader.

Darth Vader looks like he has ADD though, because of the repeated clip of him fidgeting in your vid. LOL!

I didn't repeat any clips...

lol... that's how it is in the film :-p

ALthough in a way, it paints an interesting picture of their relationship... especially if you look at it in comparison to how he acts to Palpatine in ROTJ... a slave... a child...

The he could destroy us line only "SOUNDS" different becuase for some reason, there must have been two recordings of him doing the lines. One has an adjustment made to make it fit the sound of the old original recording of the dialogue... and the some of it sounds very raw ... and new... if I really wanted to waste the time, I'd make it all sound uniform in quality... but it can be done heh...

I also toyed with warbling the hologram a bit more... if you really watch it, it's harder to get a focus on it. It's only slight, but I felt it hightened it a lot better. Before, because the image was so frozen, it looks awkward. Now I think itlook s more "natural." As natural as a hologram can be...

I also tweaked the color mix to make it closer to what Ady is doing.

Its just my thoughts on the way to edit this without copying one of the other versions or someone elses edit...

Is it just me, or can you kinda see Vader's left eye in the clip GM posted?

Author

didn't do it... lol not me...

I'd suggest removing "How is that possible?" entirely - it doesn't seem necessary in this edit of the scene.

Otherwise, top-notch job!

Author

that is true... I thought if I added it in, it might make the conversation a little bit longer... might mix it up a bit in an unexpected way. heh Just kinda throwing out a possibility

If you cut the line, I think you'd have to cut the emperor speaking over vader... it works without hims saying "Darth Vader" actually I just added it last minute becuase I thought it really pushed it and gave it an edge... without the line "How can that Be" it woudln't make sense for Palpatine to interrupt...

"He could destroy us."
"He's just a boy. Obi-Wan Can no longer help him."
"He is strong with the force."

You coudln't have him interrupt... that would be the only other thing...

"How is that possible" really stands out, but your edit is still a vast improvement over that "son of Skywalker" crap.  I would remove it if I were you, but I'm not.   So, in the end, you are the expert - do what ya want.

Bravo sir. That was incredible. I love the interuption--gives the scene a real subtext because you can sense Vader trying to downplay Luke's importance to the Emperor but the Emperor isn't buying it. And the conversation works real well. I wouldn't change a thing here. Good job.

That was superb GM

It makes sense now

I hated how darth knew about luke in the beginning of ESB, but then when he talks to the Emperor,  He doesn't know shit  >:(

Author

That works.  The only tweak I'd make is to lose the Emperor's "Lord Vader" line.

Vader: "How is that possible?  He's just a boy.  Obi-Wan can no longer..."

Emperor: "The Force is strong with him."

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

GM, that is some good stuff, I really like the interuption part. Reminds of the emprorer/palps that we all know. Peace....

I think it is a great change.  At least until Vader suggested that Luke be turned to the dark side.  Palps seems to do a 180 degree turn in his thought.  It really takes away from his earlier determination.  Maybe that's just me.

But Palpatines interruption was a great addition, nonetheless.  I'd love to see it end up in an edit someday.

hey GM, that sound clip worked really well. its so much more believable now and dynamic now. you are quite the sound genius sir!

i dont know if this has been suggested, but do you think it would work to have the emperor in his office talking to a hologram of vader in a few shots? could be neat to feature coruscant in the OT or just be a nice deleted scene? would have to mesh ROTJ and possibly his office from the prequels, or even just his tower from ROTJ but with a coruscant background visible through the windows?

honestly, the thought had crossed my mind... like the shot of him in the basement of the senate building... talking to Anakin in Episode III... but I didn't want to add that in... it would be up to Ady.

I personally liked the dynamic... if you really study the scene, it makes perfect sense.

Vader already knows about Luke. The emperor calls to pretty much say it's not safe, that Luke exists... trying to drop a bomb on Vader who kinda already knows. He tries to downplay Lukes importance (while at the same time, trying to hunt him down himself).

He's also calling to say that Luke cannot become a Jedi... which I guess insinuated that Vader should destroy him before he destroys them...

But his emotions get in the way and he suggests that if Luke can be turned... trying to find a way to not have to kill him... to keep him....

Now... mind you... Vader is kinda showing his hand here... How many Sith can there be? ...2 right? If he wants to turn Luke... he's in essence saying "I want to replace you." ... although I'm not Certain that Vader realizes it when he says that. Calling him an Ally... maybe meaning not a full fledged sith...

He has tried it before... in Episode III he tried to convince Padme to rule with him... look where that got him lol.

I think the hope was somewhat the same here.

BUT Palpatine, realizing that, thinks "I'll play along... but instead of replacing me, Luke will replace YOU at my side... " as we latter see him try in Jedi...

And it would go a long way to show the crumbling relationship in ROTJ... how Palpatine doesn't even want to see Vader... he's to obsessed with getting Luke he doesn't care about Vader anymore.

I think its kidna cool at least lol

you can kind of tell that the emperor at this point has already started to plot vader's replacement. maybe if the office did feature in the conversation. there could be a brief pause for both the characters after the conversation is over, ie, holograms disappear, then we see the emperor just think, then we see vader just think seperatly. i like how they immediatly are planning to betray each other. the only flaw between the rule of the 2, is that now they have agreed to turn luke, they have practically just told each other that they are going to have to fight for mastership.

oh george, why do you have to complicate things? it should be the rule of the few.:P

i always liked the idea of replacing sidious with dooku in TPM, and making maul grevious. the jedi would always be expecting 2 sith, but sidious was cunning and had 2 apprentices perhaps?

Author
Time

I thought Dooku was a Dark Jedi (as if theres a difference)... lol

but I DO like what you're saying... and musically it would work too... there's enough music for it... And if Ady wanted, he could cut out the shot looking down at Vader kneeling and make it all hologram lol

dooku was sith, he got the title darth tyranus, but the EU magically came up with the diffenece between sith and dark jedi after TPM came out to explain all the other baddies that they had written about like lumiya etc. hence how dooku gets lots of dark jedi cronies in the clone wars. buts that EU stuff, that is cool, but shouldnt be mixed with the films.

i can imagine a lucasfilm apologetic may try to say that they meant to turn luke to the dark side and not to sith or something like that. the thing i hate about the prequels and any added backstory to anything, is how it stops things seeming real, i would love to go back in time and tell GL to write all 6 in 1977 so it would seem like it was actually intended. would there be anyway of working the term "sith" into the speech or into any point of the ROTJ do you think? i like the idea of referencing padme in the great "your mother" debate.

just a thought, if "vader" is dutch for "father", would that make luke, darth "zoon", ie dutch for son?

Bravo, well done.

I would strongly encourage Adywan to use this version of the Vader-Emperor conversation in his edit.

I never had a problem with the 1980 or 2004 versions of this scene, but GM's is much improved over both.

Author
Time

Very good your mix GM, i like it a lot when the Emperor stops Vader.

And its me or the matte painting in the holorgram is bad tracked?

I toyed with the hologram disturbance a bit... but Vegas only lets you choose "square" or "rectangular" shapes... so its not like I could cut out his shape, I just had to guess a general shape around him... so if you see scenery wobble a little around him, that's why... Was trying to show that even little changes do a lot to the scene.
